Maggie Smith and Kathy Bates play longtime friends in ’60s Ballygar, Ireland hoping to win a church talent contest for a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, in Irish director Thaddeus O’Sullivan’s dramedy The Miracle Club. Actually there are three friends, with the third being a young neighbor, played by Agnes O’Casey. The women have differing reason for wanting to make the pilgrimage – two hope for a miracle and one wants a trip of lifetime. There is a fourth woman is on the trip, Chrissie (Laura Linney), the long-absent daughter of a recently deceased friend, who has returned after four decades in America for the funeral of her estranged mother.

The Oscars 2023 has an impressive list of 10 Best Picture nominees. This year’s group ranges from big blockbusters, such as Avatar: The Way of Water, to a foreign war drama with All Quiet on the Western Front. Here’s a ranking of the Best Picture nominees ranked from worst to best.
10. ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Sigourney Weaver as Kiri | 20th Century Studios
James Cameron’s long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water brings audiences back to the luscious world of Pandora. It’s a technical marvel, employing visual and auditory crafts to perfection. Cameron improves upon the first Avatar, but it misses out on a much-needed emotional impact. Perhaps one of the planned sequels will find a better balance and a more compelling story that could push it over the edge.
9. ‘Elvis’ Austin Butler as Elvis Presley | Warner Bros. Pictures

The awards choices of industry voters and cinephiles from across the pond will be revealed at the 76th BAFTA Awards, which will take place this Sunday, Feb. 19 at London’s Southbank Centre. A major bellwether to the Oscars, the BAFTAs have proven to be a strong indicator of what the Academy could choose as their favorite films and performances of the year.
Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” leads the tally with 14 nominations, tying “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) for most nods for a non-English language film, and second overall with “Gandhi” (1982) and “Atonement” (2007), which nabbed 16 noms each. Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” are also well-represented at the British ceremony, each landing 10 noms.
So what can we expect?

Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon will star in Night Swim from writer/director Bryce McGuire. The film is based on the short film created by McGuire and Rod Blackhurst. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are producing the film for Universal Pictures, and is the first collaboration for the two companies following the debut of the recent hit film M3GAN, which grossed 30.4M domestically this past weekend.
Details are being kept under wraps but Night Swim is being described as a supernatural thriller built around the hidden source of terror found in an iconic backyard swimming pool. The film is slated to start production soon and will open theatrically on January 19, 2024.
James Wan and Jason Blum are producers on the film. Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Judson Scott and Blumhouse’s Ryan Turek are executive producers. Alayna Glasthal will be the creative executive overseeing the film for Atomic Monster.

The brilliant The Banshees Of Inisherin reunites In Bruges co-stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson with Martin McDonagh for the writer/playwright/director’s dark comedy about a long friendship coming apart on a tiny Irish island in shocking fashion. But in this film, the comedy is darker and with a looming threat of violence, putting it more in the vein of one of playwright McDonagh’s plays like “The Hangmen” or “The Pillowman.” If you have been lucky enough to see any of his plays on stage, you know his signature combination of dark humor with undercurrents of violence, packed with biting witty dialog and thought-provoking subject matter, usually with a distinctly Irish accent.

A History channel action-adventure series, the fifth season of Vikings stars Alexander Ludwig, Alex Høgh Andersen, Peter Franzén, Katheryn Winnick, Jordan Patrick Smith, Gustaf Skarsgård, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The period drama delves into the Viking warriors and their strange, ruthless world. Read More…...

It's a sad day for fans of HBO fantasy favorite "Game of Thrones." The fourth season has come to a close and it feels as though Sunday nights just won't be the same for a while. Sure, the series has been renewed for fifth and sixth seasons (yay!), but if we look at the pattern of its past premieres, we probably won't be seeing more until Spring of 2015 (boo.)

As of yesterday, Donal Logue wasn’t certain of his future on Vikings (or, led one to believe same anyway), but today the show has been renewed for a second season. Logue (interview coverage soon), who plays the Viking King, may still be uncertain, I suppose, because who knows where the show is going, but the curiosity of timing was rather interesting.
The trials of Ragnar and clan have proven a solid venture as far as ratings are concerned, and the show not only has established a loyal viewership, but has managed strong ratings from critics.
Four new episodes remain of the first season, though you’d be hard-pressed to tell that from History’s show page, and the next episode is going to be a real high point of the show. Ragnar and the Earl will finally lock horns in the more vikingly sense, and it’s going...

It’s never been a secret that there’s nothing good on television, but while this has for decades been simply the kind of thing where all complaints ended with, “but, whadda ya gonna do?”, progress has changed the system enough that someone can do something about it. There may have long been a host of cable networks, each of them putting out original content, but they didn’t often venture into the realm we might call the primetime domain.
Even that has obviously been changing for quite some time, with HBO and other pay networks putting out their own series, often to serious critical acclaim, but now everyone is doing it. Netflix and Amazon are even producing original series, a concept that spins convention in ways it’s hard to wrap your head around. And now, History is taking its shot.

When Showtime aired The Tudors, the fact that the majority of the actors' accents were British seemed to work well, since the show was about an English royal family. I guess they couldn't find the Italian equivalent of Jeremy Irons to star in their new historical drama, The Borgias.
Regardless of that, I am dazzled by this new trailer for The Borgias. I don't know whether it's my latent Italian Catholic heritage or the gorgeous costumes and sets, but I will definitely be tuning into this show when it premieres in the spring of 2011. Henry is forced to surrender Boulogne, his great prize, as part of a peace treaty with France. But where in the past he might have felt anger, his feelings now turn melancholic with the news that King Francis, his longtime friend and sometimes foe, is dying.
There is a slow, quiet and nonetheless inevitable shifting of allegiances as Henry’s own health begins to fade. Factions are forming at Court as thoughts turn towards a successor. Some see Prince Edward, Henry’s son by Anne Seymour, as his natural heir while others, notably Bishop Gardiner, are determined to restore a Catholic to the throne in the person of Princess Mary.

I can't believe we're coming to the end of one of my favorite shows – The Tudors. The penultimate episode will be airing on June 13 and Henry VIII is getting old. Showtime has released a synopsis and promo photos, which we have for you below.
You can also view two sneak peeks for the upcoming episode that we just posted. By the way, the synopsis below is kind of spoilerly.
King Henry VIII is aging rapidly: the recent siege of Boulogne has taken its toll, his ulcerous leg is constantly in pain and he now requires glasses to read.
Political events continue to be tumultuous and exhausting. The profligate Earl of Surrey, a noble not known for his sense of judgment, loses 600 men in an unprovoked battle in France, endangering Henry’s recent success in Boulogne. News arrives that the King of France is preparing for war and, worse, England’s...

We're getting closer to the series finale of The Tudors. Showtime has released promo photos for the June 6 new episode (sorry, no new episode on May 30!). Check them out below.
The year is 1544. Under the supervision of Henry VIII, the Earl of Surrey and his men attempt to tunnel their way into the French castle at Boulogne. Clearly pleased to be once again in the field of battle, the King dines and entertains in style at his tent some distance from the action.
But progress is slow and conditions are appalling for his soldiers. Over two thousand men die of disease and starvation and another three thousand fall ill as ‘the flux’ sweeps the King’s camp. When hope of success seems all but lost, Treviso, the King’s engineer, creates a spectacular explosion in the tunnel that finally breaches the castle. The French surrender to a gloating Henry who...

Henry VIII marries his final wife, Catherine Parr (played by Joley Richardson) on the May 23 new episode of The Tudors. Showtime has released promo photos and a detailed synopsis for the episode.
Henry marries Catherine Parr, his sixth and final wife. The wedding is notable for the presence of Henry’s daughters, Princesses Mary and Elizabeth. Catherine is determined to be a loving stepmother to the King’s children, who are fond of her in return.
Plans are made for the invasion of France and Charles Brandon is named commander of the English armies. The emissaries of the Emperor Charles, with whom Henry has formed an alliance, are entertained in great style at the English Court where, to their surprise and delight, Princess Mary addresses them in Spanish.
As the Catholic influence increases, Bishop Gardiner begins to investigate the new Queen’s religious beliefs. She is rumored to be a...

Looks like Henry won't be wasting any time in securing his sixth and final wife, Catherine Parr (to be playing by Joley Richardson). Showtime has released promo photos and a synopsis for the May 16 new episode of The Tudors.
In a surprise decision, the King orders a new Act of Parliament, which restores the succession rights of his two daughters, Princesses Elizabeth and Mary. Although they are next in line after their youngest brother Edward, this powerful gesture of his love will have historical consequences.
The King dispatches Hertford and his arch enemy, the Earl of Surrey, north to warn the King of Scotland that any further acts of aggression will be responded to with the might of England’s armies. But Surrey is no man for issuing warnings and the body count is high at the Battle of Solway Moss.

Things are really not looking up for Ms. Katherine Howard. It looks like things are going to get grim for the young queen very quickly. Showtime has released promo photos and a synopsis for the May 9 new episode of the Tudors.
Lord Hertford’s investigation into allegations of the Queen’s infidelities moves with speed. Deeply upset by revelations of his beloved young wife’s sexual past, Henry weeps. But once adultery is uncovered, his response is swift and decisive.
Queen Katherine (Tamzin Merchant) is shocked by the King’s (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) orders that she be confined to her apartments. The investigation into her past moves with speed: Francis Dereham is arrested and interrogated. Joan Bulmer is questioned as is the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk – at whose home Joan and Catherine lived as young women and where their immoral acts are rumored to have taken place. Dereham confesses that...

Things are not looking good for Henry's fifth wife, Katherine Howard. A new episode of The Tudors will be airing on May 2 and we have a synopsis and promo photos for the episode below.
Rejuvenated by his tour of the north of England, Henry feels a new man and longs after his new Queen; unaware that her affections are diverted elsewhere. Katherine’s past begins to catch up as an old liaison comes looking for a job threatening to reveal all about their sexual history. Someone beats him to it when an anonymous letter is sent to the King containing accusations of adultery. Although unconvinced of the rumor, Henry confines Katherine to her apartments pending a thorough investigation.
Pontefract Castle, Yorkshire was the only royal property captured by the rebels during the Catholic uprising known as the ‘Pilgrimage of Grace’. In a symbolic gesture it now welcomes Henry (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and his large entourage.

A new episode of The Tudors will be airing this weekend on April 25 as the show works its way through its final season. Showtime has released promo photos and a synopsis of the episode, which you can view below.
Buoyed by the happiness that a young wife brings an aging man, Henry is noticeably more tolerant and forgiving than he once was. Such goodwill is well appreciated by the peasants of the North who gratefully accept Henry’s forgiveness for the Pilgrimage of Grace revolt, during a Royal visit. But the King’s benevolence may yet be tested by his new Queen: Katherine Howard has submitted to seduction by the young and handsome Thomas Culpepper.

I'm feeling really good about the final season of The Tudors. Last season got a bit bogged down when the show focused on the religious and political storyline, but the premiere episode of season 4 shows that this series is back to the royal soap opera storylines that made it great back in seasons 1 and 2. The next new episode of The Tudors will be airing on April 18. Showtime has released promo photos and a synopsis, which you can view below.
Thomas Culpepper – Henry VIII’s newest servant – continues to make eyes at his King’s young bride, Katherine Howard. Her servant suggests seduction. While the King shows his age by going to bed early during the Christmas celebration the young but not so innocent members of his court party on.

"The Tudors" returns for its fourth and final season on Sunday, April 11 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
In the last season, we watched as King Henry VIII's ( Jonathan Rhys Meyers) relationships with Jane Seymour (Annabelle Wallis) and Anne of Cleves (Joss Stone) crumbled. He suppressed protests over England's break with Rome and the season ended with the execution of his chief minister, Thomas Cromwell (James Frain).
The final season will feature Henry's last two wives, Catherine Howard (Tamzin Merchant) and Catherine Parr (Joely Richardson). We also hear that Rhys Meyers will be losing his boyish good looks via prosthetics and graying hair to more accurately portray Henry in his older, tubbier years as he further descends into madness.
Creator Michael Hirst will again write all ten episodes of the final season.
Check out the Season 4 trailer below:

Hilary Swank plays the legendary aviator Amelia Earhart in Amelia. And although, as I said in my review, the movie is earthbound, the choice of Swank in the title role demonstrates sky-clear thinking. (Okay, that's enough of the windblown aeronautical metaphors.) Physically, the two are twins, and not just because Swank has been coiffed in Earhart's striking, trademark, short-haired tousle, a variation on Winnie the Pooh's Christopher Robin. Rather, both women project a seductive androgyny-a boyishness that nevertheless leaves no doubt about the sexuality of the woman wearing the trousers. True, Swank first found fame as a girl living as...
