Straight from one of wrestling’s most outspoken characters, this is a candid look beyond the ring.

Nail in the Coffin is a documentary that is part wrestling documentary and part human interest story that will appeal to both wrestling and non-wrestling fans. The documentary balances the career of Vampiro the wrestler while showcasing the importance of second chances and being a father.
Nail in the Coffin follows Ian Hodgkinson, better known as the wrestler Vampiro, from his early days playing hockey in Canada to his success in Mexico’s luchador wrestling scene to signing a lucrative contact in the late 1990s with WCW to his life now, as booker for Lucha Libre Aaa Worldwide (“Aaa”). Along the way, a cautious tale unfolds that is not new to wrestling fans as Ian becomes addicted to alcohol, drugs and the thrill of the roaring crowd, much to his body and doctor’s chagrin.

We recently had a chance to catch with legendary wrestler Ian Hodgkinson, otherwise known as Vampiro, and director Michael Paszt to chat about their amazing documentary film “Nail in the Coffin: The Rise and Fall of Vampiro”. You would be hard-pressed to find another individual that has put as much heart and soul into the sport of wrestling than more than 30-year veteran Ian Hodgkinson and it was amazing to take a peek behind the scenes and get to witness how this legendary entertainer better known as Vampiro works. In fact, it seems he truly never stops working! “Nail in the Coffin: The Rise and Fall of Vampiro” shows audiences another side of Vampiro, as we meet the man Ian Hodgkinson, who is so very much more than just a wrestling persona. Hodgkinson is first and foremost a father, however, he also juggles the many duties of constantly being on...

It’s been a banner year for wrestling documentaries, with the release of both You Cannot Kill David Arquette and Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro. For the latter, documentarian Michael Paszt spent several years chronicling the life of Ian Hodgkinson, aka Vampiro, following him during his time working with several companies in Mexico and here in the United States (you can read my review Here).
Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Hodgkinson and Paszt about their experiences collaborating together on Nail in the Coffin, and they discussed the process of making the documentary, Hodgkinson’s career, and the surprises that cropped up along the way.
Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro is currently available to rent digitally or you can purchase it on Blu-ray as well.

For this review round-up, I’ll be talking about a trio of recent releases that include Antebellum from directors Christopher Renz and Gerard Bush, the wrestling documentary Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro, as well as McG’s latest horror comedy, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, which recently debuted exclusively on Netflix.
Antebellum: I had such high hopes for Antebellum going into it, but there’s a very precise moment in the film where it decides to take a huge left turn, and that’s when everything, to me, fell totally and completely apart with the story. Before that, I absolutely loved the characters, the performances, the costume design, as well as some fantastic production design that was a real highlight as well, and both the pacing and a palpable sense of tension made Antebellum an enthralling experience to watch unfold.

Pro wrestlers often lead tragic lives. That’s just sort of baked into the cake of professional wrestling. The athletes live hard, indulge often times in various substances, and simply don’t have a particularly long life expectancy. Those who live to be old men and women are in the minority. Even seeing those who have triumphed over the sort of adversity that takes down so many of their colleagues is noteworthy. That’s what makes the documentary Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro so interesting, as this is truly about the fall, but also the rise, of a wrestler who could have been just another statistic. The documentary is about Ian Hodgkinson, better known as his wrestling alter ego Vampiro. Looking into the legendary career of Hodgkinson’s wrestling persona, Vampiro, the doc is far more concerned with who he is as a person, as...

Ian Hodgkinson is a well known Canadian wrestler, though he did not ply his trade here in the Great White North. No, Hodgkinson sought fame in the warmer climate of Mexico, bursting onto the Lucha wrestling scene at the beginning of the 90s in Mexico City. Women loved him! Men wanted to be him! He rose to fame under the guise of Vampiro, the Vampiro Canadiense. Fortune and fame followed Hodgkinson and his bad boy persona, spurred on by popular 90s musical acts. He would eventually marry and have a daughter, Dasha. Seeking a better life for her he moved Dasha from Mexico City and who knows how many millions of people to the remote Canadian city of Thunder Bay, and it’s population of...

Ian Hodgkinson, a.k.a. pro-wrestling’s Vampiro, is still undead — try as he, his opponents and the industry might.
In feature-length documentary “Nail in the Coffin: The Rise and Fall of Vampiro,” the semi-retired Lucha Libre legend “reveals the harsh realities behind the glamour of being in the world of wrestling.” That’s according to the doc’s logline, having seen the film, but we can attest to the harshness of Hodgkinson’s wrestling style — and his lifestyle.
You’ll still have to wait a few days to watch the movie, but readers will immediately see what we mean via the video above. In TheWrap’s exclusive sneak peek, his doctor wonders “How are you even f—ing walking?”

“Lucha Underground” has become a cult hit with wrestling fans, thanks in large part to the elaborate backstage segments that have given the show an otherworldly mythology that has gotten bigger with each season. Skip Chaisson, director of those cutscenes, takes TheWrap behind the scenes with notes on his favorite shots from the El Rey series and what inspired them.
Episode 1: The Opening Fight Scene: “Inspired by an old El Santo comic, this was our first big fight. It established what we were doing with Lucha “real world” fights.
Episode 4: King Cuerno’s introduction: “This was one of the moments where I knew we were on to something. The sun was setting and King walks out to the edge of the roof a la “The Dark Knight” with no fear, a total badass hero come to life.”

Welcome to this review of Bound For Glory, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have Impact Wrestling’s biggest card of the year to talk about, so let’s do so.
Rich Swann & Willie MacK Beat Ethan Page & Matt Sydal – Tag Team Match My Take: 4 out of 5
This was pretty damn cool. Page was the only one who could be called less than great here, but since he was quite good himself, I’d say this was great stuff. Mack is some-thing else and is finally getting his shot at Pay Per View, which he deserves. The stunts here were among the best of the year and the match itself was every-thing that Impact could ever need from an opener.
Eli Drake Beat James Ellsworth – Eli Drake’S Open Challenge My Take: .5 out of 5
This was as bad of a match as any that has ever appeared on PPV.

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we will use a very recent review of this card from WrestlingInc and the author of the review, Joesph James. Let’s jump right in.
Match #1: El Dragon Azteca Jr. beat Ivelisse – Gift of the Gods Championship Match The following is courtesy of Joseph James and WrestlingInc.com:
Ivelisse gains an early advantage with a few nice arm drags, followed by frankensteiner from the middle rope. Dragon Azteca catches Ivelisse with a running crescent kick in the middle of her suicide dive attempt, and begins to work on the left arm to wear Ivelisse down. Azteca shows off some nice submission skills with a Boston Crab and a crossface, but Ivelisse uses her Mma background to escape.

Match #1: Dragon Bane, Astrolux and Freelance beat Draztik Boy, Latigo and Aramis – Trios Match
This was a thrilling stunt show with one death-defying risk after another. Any one of these guys could be a big star in the future.
Match #2: Sammy Guevera beat Ach, Australian Suicide and Shane Strickland – Aaa World Cruiserweight Championship Match
This was another wild match that was a thrill a second. I always worry about the risks that luchadors put themselves through with the style, but they are gonna do it despite themselves. This match had a lot of hard work in it and will really get your blood pumping.

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review on Nerdly. This week, we have some excellent action with Joey Ryan and Mil Muertes, to name but a few. I’m Nathan Favel and we should get right to the action!
Match #1: Matanza Cueto beat Cortez Castro
My Take: This was a quick squash that Matanza won. You could piss farther than this match went.
Match #2: Ivelisse beat Joey Ryan for a Gift of the Gods Medallion
My Take: This was a good match and an infinitely better inter-gender match than either of the Asuka/James Ellsworth matches from WWE Smackdown. It’s remarkable what happens when you take a match seriously. Ryan is no stranger to working with women, as he had a great run in Pwg with Candice Larae as a tag team. I would wager that Lucha Underground is set to be the most innovative wrestling league of the year,...

The Cueto Cup Tournament began on Lucha Underground this week, seeing the competitors in Group A of the tournament facing off to see who would advance to the next round. The episode brought us some interesting matches as well as some storyline focus on the Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Johnny Mundo match that will occur at Ultima Lucha Tres.
The opening match between The Mack and Mala Suerte was hard fought but didn't need to be. Mala Suerte was not put in a position to look strong. He got some offense in during the match of course, preventing it from being a complete squash, yet Mala Suerte gained nothing from this match. The Mack came out a little worse for wear due to taking a long time to beat someone he should have soundly beaten. In a wrestling match, you ideally want to accomplish two things. The El Rey Network television show, Lucha Underground, has debuted on Netflix. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently available for streaming with more seasons to potentially come in the future. Current episodes of the show are still on the El Rey Network.
The show is a different take on wrestling, taking it from a pseudo-sports show and turning it into a full fledged male soap opera or telenovella. There is plenty of action in the ring with some great talent like former WWE star John Morrison who goes by the name Johnny Mundo as well as indie superstar Richochet, who goes by the name Prince Puma. Former WWE color commentator Matt Striker does the play by play of the show with Vampiro offering color commentary.

Easily one of the coolest things I’ve ever had the opportunity to do during any SXSW Film Festival was attending the Lucha Underground live event held at the Austin Music Hall. Packed with rabid Lucha fans, a palpable sense of electricity was in the air as Austin Warfare began, and not once did the action ever let up throughout the two-hour show.
The night kicked off with a Lucha-themed band getting the audience pumped and the first match of Austin Warfare was the excellent four-way match between Drago (who may have had my favorite mask of the night), Aerostar (who nearly destroyed himself during the match by jumping off the second-floor balcony), Son of Havoc, and Pentagon Jr., who took the win.
The legendary Vampiro came out next to cut a promo about Lucha Underground leaving “The Temple” for the first time ever to come to Austin for the 2016 SXSW Film Festival,...

I will admit I was much more of a WWE fan than WCW, but even with that being the case I remember some classic matches from Nitro that caught my interest. With The Best Of WCW Monday Night Nitro – Volume 3 being released I was wondering if we’d get some, but the cracks are starting to show, and a lack of focus is at play.
My problem with this release may come from the fact that over the last month or so I’ve reviewed WWE: The Kliq Rules, and WWE: Monday Night Wars Vol. 1 which had a focus on the Nwo. This wasn’t a bad thing, it showed them at their best and when they were entertaining. The problem is The Best Of WCW Monday Night Nitro – Volume 3 decides to once again give their years a focus, which weren’t some of Nitro’s best.

Last week, Dario Cueto — and his unquenchable thirst for violence — announced that instead of one show, Ultimate Lucha would now become two. With plenty of awesome matches on the horizon it’s time to break each one down.
If you’re a longtime fan, this should be a great refresher. If you’re new to the product, it’s never to late to join in on the fun. Need more convincing? Here’s 15 reasons why Lucha Underground is awesome, and 20 of their finest matches in the first season.
On Wednesday, things kick off with The Mack going against “The Man They Call” Cage in a “Falls Count Anywhere” match. Also this week we get to see Drago vs. Hernandez in a “Believer’s Backlash” match, which is going to allow the fans to join the action.

Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and one man having a seizure -- that's what wrestling star Vampiro encountered at a McDonald's ... and he ended up saving the guy's life. The "Lucha Underground" announcer saw a man convulsing on the ground at a McDonald's in Ontario and called 911. While he was waiting, Vampiro says he rushed in to help the elderly man with basic first aid techniques ... then waited with him for first responders to arrive.

Lucha Underground, El Rey
Lucha Underground debuted as a new wrestling promotion on October 29, 2014. It airs every Wednesday night at 8pm on the El Rey Network in the United States. It’s not available on television in other countries, but if you search for it online you can find it uploaded on a number of popular video websites.
It’s not easy for a wrestling promotion to get going from the ground up, but what Lucha Underground has done right is present itself as something different from what we usually see. There aren’t going to be any Grumpy Cat guest starring segments or guys dressed in bunny suits to please the kids. It’s old school lucha libre (“pro wrestling” in Spanish).
The shows are filmed in the Los Angeles area in a venue that they call The Temple. It’s not a huge place, but the crowd is...

The popularity of a documentary film is often based on word-of-mouth. Very few docs get a wide release (or a theatrical release at all, for that matter) or receive much press. Unless it’s the latest Michael Moore film, a massive advocacy film aiming for Oscar recognition or a mass-market oddity like Supersize Me, a documentary is unlikely to get much public attention. Speciality docs about World War 2, boxing, rap feuds etc. will always have a market among people who are interested in those topics. Occasionally, one of them will even transcend its genre and become a broader success, introducing people to a new sub-culture or perspective. Most documentaries, however, get their recognition because people hear about them or see them at festivals and tell others to watch them.
Narrative documentaries, films that tell a first-person story about an individual or event, are even less likely to garner the attention of the public.
