Relatively few films from Fox Pictures (before they became Twentieth Century Fox) are readily available: Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans is the big one. The modest caper Black Sheep wouldn't be high on the list for reissue: stars Edmund Lowe and Claire Trevor aren't too well-remembered, though he's in Dinner at Eight and she's in Stagecoach. Despite a large cast of supporting players, rotund character man Eugene Pallette is the only other really familiar figure, though founding Keystone Kop Ford Sterling has a good bit as a ship's detective. We're on a transatlantic liner, see, and there are warnings posted about professional gamblers: The Lady Eve territory, before Sturges thought of it. Lowe is such a gambler, but he's a swell guy really. Trevor plays an actress, which is no stretch, and the two have real chemistry. He has a debonair manner and a mellifluous voice—and a drunk scene,...

Daylight saving time: How is this still a thing? Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has the answer, and despite an age-old assumption, it has nothing to do with farmers — or their “stupid, stupid cows.”
As it turns out, the answer isn’t really an answer at all, at least not one that supports the validity of daylight saving as a continued practice in 2015.

HBO are currently courting Anna Paquin for Madame X, a miniseries she and her True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer are developing through their production company, Casm. Based on Kate Manning’s book My Notorious Life, the show is set in Victorian-era New York City and follows the life of Axie Muldoon, a wealthy New Yorker who helps her husband create a successful midwife business.
Per Deadline, the series purports to be “a love story, a family saga, and the confessions of a charismatic and passionate woman who changed the lives of countless others.” That premise, along with the true story tag, is a compelling prospect for the HBO treatment – especially in light of the superb Olive Kitteridge series.
As it stands, Paquin will star and executive produce alongside Moyer via Casm, with Jack Black producing through his Electric Dynamite banner. Your Sister’s Sister and Laggies helmer Lynn Shelton is...

HBO's favorite vampy fairy may be returning to work on another sexy show, but this time as a mere human. Former True Blood actress Anna Paquin is in talks to play the lead in Madame X, according to The Wrap. The miniseries is adapted from Kate Manning's period novel My Notorious Life, which is based on a true story from the Victorian era. The series follows Axie Muldoon (Paquin), a penniless daughter of immigrants who becomes a successful, yet controversial, midwife and abortionist in New York City. Above: 2-panel poster for Remorques aka Stormy Waters (Jean Grémillon, France, 1941). Poster by Henri Monnier.
I’ve posted a couple of gorgeous posters for the films of Jean Grémillon in other contexts, but now that the unsung auteur is getting his due with a month-long retrospective at the Museum of the Moving Image, I thought it was time to look at his entire oeuvre in posters. Grémillon has been written about often and eloquently in these pages by David Cairns, and the Notebook has just published the first part of a translation of a terrific 1978 article on the director, so I feel there’s little I can add in the way of exegesis. But I have managed to gather posters for thirteen of his feature films which I present in chronological order from 1928 to 1953. This isn’t so much a blind item as it is, say, a far-sighted one. But, before I explain why, let me give you your clues:
* As the headline on this story foretells, a certain female character is about to be paid a visit by the stork. (Her delicate condition will be revealed on air sometime in the next three months.) What the headline doesn’t hint at, however, is that the gal in question is a lead on an established series (i.e., more than a season old).

Happy Halloween, comic book lovers! Although the only truly significant thing about this Halloween column is that I’ll be covering two weeks worth of comics instead of just one, after missing last Wednesday.
Also, we must remember our less fortunate monster brethren on the east coast, some of whom have been forced to cancel Halloween festivities altogether due to the ferocity of Hurricane Sandy. For them, I suggest venturing out, grabbing one of these titles, and curling up in bed with a candle to recreate the magic…
Magic such as is found in DC Comics’ National Comics: Madame X, which is full of voodoo and zombies and murder and extramarital affairs. The Tarot plays a perfect role, and the tale could easily fit into an Eerie issue of old.
Wolverine is everywhere in Marvel, it’s true. But he doesn’t always get to swear and be his intensely violent self.

When DC Comics launched their full universe reboot The New 52, the company maintained that their run of ongoing titles would always number fifty two. Initially this had fans questioning how they would handle cancellations, but this was answered by a one in/one out kinda deal, with a cancelled title been replaced by a new one. We’ve seen this with Hawk And Dove, Men Of War, and others receiving the chop, and their replacements, with notable inclusions Batman Incorporated and Dial H, hitting shelves in May.
Now a new anthology title, National Comics, has been announced, but as of yet there is no word on what title will be cancelled.
As reported by Wired , the new title, a revival of a series which first saw print in the 1940′s, will focus on a different character every issue, telling done-in-one stories featuring the more obscure character who call the DC Universe their home.

Wired reveal that DC Comics will release a new 48-page ongoing series called National Comics this July. The series will feature one off tales in each issue. These will focus on DC's most obscure and strange characters with different creators taking the reigns every month. The first will see Jeff Lemire and Cully Hammer kicking things off with National Comics: Kid Eternity #1. Subsequent issues will feature Madame X, Rose and Thorn, and Looker. Of course, this leaves us with one very pertinent question. Which book is being cancelled for National Comics to replace? Either that, or the New 52 is about to become the New 53... After being given a second chance on life, he finds himself with the ability to resurrect the dead. Freeman uses his new ability to help those he resurrects to find their murderers and to gain closure, so they can continue to the other side.

DC Comics has announced that they will be launching a brand new stand-alone series called National Comics, taking the mantle title of the publisher before they were known as DC Comics. The new title will focus on many of the characters found in DC’s ‘New 52′ that either don’t have the room or proper avenue for more detailed storytelling in some of the bigger DC titles. The first four characters to be featured in the books will include Eternity, Madame X, Rose and Thorn, and Looker, each whom will have their own single issue to better acquaint the readers with their backstory.
The first of these new anthologies will feature an updated telling of the classic Vertigo title, Kid Eternity, written by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Cully Hamner. The first issue will include a whopping 48 pages and can be summed up with the official synopsis released below.

Frederica Sagor Pt.2: Women Screenwriters in 1920s Hollywood [Photo: Emil Jannings in The Way of All Flesh.] Frederica Sagor's reported final Hollywood screen credit was the scenario for the 1928 slapstick comedy The Farmer's Daughter, directed by Arthur Rosson at Fox. Marjorie Beebe, previously featured in several comedy shorts, had the title role (no relation to Loretta Young's 1947 Oscar-winning Congresswoman-to-be). In her book, Sagor says she was paid $750 a week (approx. $9,700 today) to write the story for this programmer — one she hated — about rural lovers and piles of manure. The previous year, Sagor had married screenwriter Ernest Maas, who held an executive post at Fox. In her autobiography, she states that the couple wrote a story named Beefsteak Joe, inspired by the life of Maas' father, that was misappropriated by Paramount and released as The Way of All Flesh. Directed by Gone with the Wind's Victor Fleming, the now-lost melodrama — Madame X meets Stella Dallas in...

The art of Vincent Desiderio hinges between the frailty of life and the depth of the human spirit. He presents us with tragedy, beauty, bliss, and befuddlement, with unrestrained passion and supreme technique, and we are spellbound. There is quietness too, often in moments of truth, where freedom or failure hangs in the balance.
When looking at how Desiderio represents certain secondary and tertiary details in paint, we see a substantive push toward abstraction. In the background of “Spiegel im Spiegel” (2010), and in areas such as the lower left corner of “I Liberate” (2011), Desiderio challenges the limits of representation without losing hold of the facts.
He braces us with poignant narratives, with stark realities, and then hits us with a cacophony of luminous and lively marks in roofing tar, shellac and oil paint that break down the elements into a more subconscious impression of the world around us. This push...

Meet Joko Anwar: acclaimed director of Joni's Promise, Kala and The Forbidden Door an in-demand writer and apparently perfectly comfortable in a dress and curlers. In a country where social conservatism and censorship is always a problem, Anwar is currently directing a porn-themed stage musical and is appearing as an actor with a bit part in Madame X.
