After earning universal acclaim for his screenplay for Sicario, Taylor Sheridan once again hit it out of the park with his neo-western thriller Hell or High Water, which was too received highly among critics. Arguably one of the best heist films put on the screen in the last decade, the thriller excels at everything it sets out to achieve, especially with the bank robbery sequence,
But critics aren’t alone in lauding the thriller, as the neo-western got a unique bit of praise from Cain Vincent Dyer, who possesses vast knowledge when it comes to bank robberies.

The story was penned by Ben Hopkins, and follows the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb in a London construction site, sparking a mass evacuation, which the serves as perfect cover for a heist.
“I had the idea of combining all the high stakes of an unexploded bomb with that of a bank robbery – clashing these two genres to create as much pressure as possible in a context that feels as real as possible. Ben Hopkins took those ingredients and cooked up the compelling script that we are now taking into production,” the director said in a statement.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson set to star in bank heist film, Fuze, from Outlaw King director David Mackenzie
Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been spending the last couple of years trying to avoid James Bond questions since it was said he was testing for the new role. The Bullet Train star stated, “I just focus on the things I can have in my hands right now. What’s in front of me right now.“ What’s in front of him is his next go at comic book movies with the Spider-man-related film, Kraven The Hunter. The Sony film, made in association with Marvel, was originally set to release last year. However, the strikes would delay the movie to late this summer on August 30, 2024.
While we wait to see what happens on the James Bond front, Taylor-Johnson has lined up a new project that will reunite him with his Outlaw King director, David Mackenzie. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Taylor-Johnson will be starring in Fuze, a bank heist movie with a bit of a twist.

Hell Or High Water and Outlaw King director David Mackenzie is to make another film with Aaron Taylor-Johnson – the heist thriller, Fuze.
David Mackenzie has already made one spectacular heist movie with Hell Or High Water, so it’s pleasing to hear he’s about to embark on another one. Called Fuze, it’ll star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, with whom Mackenzie previously collaborated on the 2018 historical piece, Outlaw King.
The film’s heist takes place as an area of London is evacuated following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb; based on an idea by Mackenzie, it’s the work of British screenwriter and novelist Ben Hopkins, whose most recent credit was the 2023 psychological thriller Inside, which starred Willem Dafoe as an art thief.
Fuze will also see Mackenzie re-team with Giles Nuttgens, the cinematographer who made West Texas look so bleakly captivating in Hell Or High Water.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has found his next role in David Mackenzie’s heist thriller “Fuze,” which Anton will launch at the European Film Market in Berlin this month.
The film reunites Taylor-Johnson and “Hell or High Water” helmer Mackenzie, who last worked together on 2018’s “Outlaw King.” With a script from Ben Hopkins, “Fuze” “opens on the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb in a London construction site, sparking a mass evacuation – the perfect cover for a heist,” according to the film’s synopsis.
Taylor-Johnson’s stacked project lineup currently includes the headlining role in Marvel’s “Kraven and the Hunter,” due out in August; “The Fall Guy” alongside Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt; and Robert Eggers’ highly anticipated “Nosferatu.” Mackenzie’s 2016 neo-Western “Hell or High Water” scored four Oscar noms, including best picture, and he’s also set to direct “Relay” starring Lily James, Riz Ahmed and Sam Worthington.

Aporia (Jared Moshé)
What would your life be like if you didn’t go to work the day an accident would otherwise change everything? How much of your future might shift if you decide to simply alter your schedules to better accommodate picking up your child from school? One question seems bigger than the other, yet the second may actually impact what occurs next more. Because you can’t know for certain. And there aren’t any do-overs. Perhaps it’s better that way, to accept and move on rather than risk an even worse fate. Or is it? That’s what writer-director Jared Moshé seeks to contemplate with his grounded science fiction drama Aporia. – Jared M. (full review)

Air, water, food, and shelter rank at the top of the basic necessities required for human survival. In Inside, writer/director Vasilis Katsoupis and co-writer Ben Hopkins wield psychological torment to posit that art should also be considered a necessity. For its art that drives a man forward in this single-location thriller that attempts to hinder survival at every turn.
Inside introduces high-end art thief Nemo (Willem Dafoe) smack in the middle of an elaborate operation that sees him slither inside a luxury penthouse in a New York City high rise with ease. He communicates via walkie-talkie to a pair of unseen collaborators, guiding his way through security systems and the apartment’s smart technology in search of the coveted piece of art Nemo’s there to steal. Anchored by a strong lead performance from Willem Dafoe, director Vasilis Katsoupis’ Inside proves to be an engaging and engrossing thriller that will keep the viewer mesmerized until the bitter end.
The nuts and bolts of the plot of Inside are that art thief Nemo (Willem Dafoe) finds himself trapped and abandoned in a New York penthouse/smart house after his crew leaves him to fend for himself after their planned robbery goes sideways. Unfortunately for Nemo though, the tenants of the home are on an extended trip leaving no food or other supplies in the house and the computer controlling the house has malfunctioned forcing him to devise a way to escape his smart prison before succumbing to starvation and the inevitable hallucinations he will suffer.

Willem Dafoe defies classification. He appears in blockbusters and arthouse films, in lead roles or as part of an ensemble. What can be counted on is that he’ll add a dash of idiosyncratic malevolence to whatever part he’s playing. Whether he’s playing Christ, Antichrist or somewhere in between, there’s always something slightly off that makes him watchable. In “Inside,” director Vasilis Katsoupis provides him with a showcase part in what is essentially a one-man show that Dafoe carries with aplomb.
Dafoe’s character is an art thief named Nemo. He is first shown breaking into a high-tech Manhattan apartment. He’s connected to someone on the outside via microphone. It’s clear they hacked into the apartment’s security system. The camera slowly reveals the apartment as an expensive and impeccably designed but sterile abode. Its colors are monochromatic in a mostly bluish hue, there’s...

Inside is a single-location dramatic thriller that taps into claustrophobia. Director Vasilis Katsoupis and screenwriter Ben Hopkins rely on the talents of Willem Dafoe to carry what’s essentially a one-man show. Despite an assuredly solid performance, Inside is a tepid film that finds moments of tension, but it doesn’t quite push itself as much as it needs to.

Willem Dafoe gets a dream role with Inside, a combo of art film in more ways than one, psychological thriller, heist movie, and survival tale all rolled into one in which Dafoe’s Nemo is center stage, alone, the entire time.
The Focus Features release is World Premiering today at the Berlin Film Festival and is the brainchild and narrative feature debut for Greek director Vasilis Katsoupis whose only previous feature was a documentary called My Friend Larry Gus. Here with the help of screenwriter Ben Hopkins, he takes a challenging leap forward creating a wrenching drama about an art thief who becomes trapped in a glass cage, in this case a New York City luxury apartment that if we didn’t know better could pass itself off as an art gallery, its walls and floors full of distinctive works of arts from paintings to sculptures, video to installations, and more.

We don’t learn the name of our protagonist until the final credits roll on Vasilis Katsoupis’ “Inside.” It’s “Nemo,” perhaps picked to conjure a spirit of adventure, but this Nemo isn’t traveling under the sea or to an island, this one is trapped in a claustrophobic nightmare, one spent entirely with the art-lover-turned-thief in the world’s most pretentious (and deadly?) penthouse. There, he is forced to use all his wits (and priceless works of art) to survive a waking nightmare.
It’s a natty-enough twist on the survivor story — what if you were stuck inside, not outside? — and one bolstered by the inherent watchability of star Willem Dafoe, one of the few performers absolutely up to the task of this particular feature. But , as “Inside” soon turns from clever questions to muddled answers, ending on the oddest possible note for a film that opened with such promise.

You didn’t think Willem Dafoe would star in a conventional escape room thriller, did you? Then again, “Inside” is barely an escape room thriller despite it being about an art thief trapped in the location of his latest heist. Greek filmmaker Vasilis Katsoupis’s elegant provocation may be closer to the kind of existential mood pieces that generations ago defined so much of European cinema, but it’s been given a modern gloss of design, tension, and star power more in keeping with the gripping tales of solitude that have found a mainstream audience.
Inevitably, because of its challenging nature, “Inside” and its methodical excavation of one man’s survival instincts in a place not assumed to require endurance –- a luxury penthouse in Manhattan — will likely only appeal to the arthouse crowd. Even among discerning moviegoers its more indulgent elements may occasionally grate.

Dafoe excels as an art thief trapped inside a super-rich art collector’s apartment in this claustrophobic fiction feature debut from Vasilis Katsoupis
There’s a throb of claustrophobic panic and despair in this movie; something like something any of us might feel while at a modern art exhibition and for a long, long moment unable to find the exit. Maybe the movie itself aspires to the cool, affectless chill of an unimaginably expensive piece of contemporary art.
Documentary-maker Vasilis Katsoupis makes his fiction feature debut here , working on the script with British screenwriter Ben Hopkins. Willem Dafoe stars, as athletic and ascetic as ever, playing Nemo, an art thief who is breaking into an ultra-luxurious Manhattan apartment belonging to an art-collector plutocrat, filled with all his modern pieces. (There is a mention of this man being away in Kazakhstan and one of his pieces is a red canvas with a “Z” on it.

There’s more than enough blurring of the lines between reality and dark fantasy, not to mention any conventional grasp of temporality, to position Inside as a new entry in the Greek Weird Wave. But subtract the brutalist-chic design aesthetics and the meticulously curated art collection, both of which have major bearing on the unfolding psychological thriller, and you have an inverted take on familiar one-person survival dramas like Cast Away or All is Lost. How much you get out of the narrative feature debut of commercials director Vasilis Katsoupis will depend on your appetite for another of Willem Dafoe’s heady plunges into a character’s soul in torment.
From Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ through Lars von Trier’s Antichrist, Abel Ferrara’s Pasolini to Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate, Dafoe throughout his long and celebrated career has shown an uncommon willingness to put himself through the emotional,...

To set a 100-minute drama entirely inside the confines of a single apartment — and to have just a solitary character performing for the camera — might not seem like the most obvious template for an edge-of-your-seat thriller.
But when that character is played by a versatile actor with the range of multi-Oscar-nominated Willem Dafoe, there’s no telling what will emerge. That’s the case with “Inside,” which premieres Feb. 20 in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival. Focus Features is releasing the film theatrically in the U.S. on March 17.
Dafoe stars as an art thief who enters a collector’s high-tech penthouse hunting for valuable works of art, only to be trapped inside when the security system locks the apartment down. When help fails to arrive, the thief — surrounded by so many of the art works he covets and admires — must use all of his cunning and invention to survive,...

Back in November, Focus Features released three odd teaser posters for their upcoming psychological thriller Inside, posters that showed things like canned food, moldy fruit, and a pigeon instead of the film’s star Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man: No Way Home). Now the company has unveiled a new poster for Inside, and this one actually has Dafoe on it! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Like many of us in the 2020s, Willem Dafoe is no stranger to being stranded in a single location. His crusty old lighthouse keeper in "The Lighthouse" spent the whole movie marooned on an island with Robert Pattinson. (Not a bad way to spend 109 minutes ... for him, since Pattinson's character had to endure his flatulence.) "Inside" sees Dafoe going it alone as an art thief who gets trapped in a New York penthouse after it locks down, panic-room-style, right in the middle of his heist.
He's on literal lockdown, you see. This is "The Penthouse" instead of "The Lighthouse." Unfortunately, the refrigerator is not well-stocked, and there's no running water, either. Other than art worth millions, his only friends — and food — are the fish, which makes his character's name, Nemo, rather ironic (not to mention the fact that Dafoe is reportedly a pescatarian in real life).

Yesterday, Focus Features unveiled a trio of strange teaser posters for their upcoming psychological thriller Inside, posters that showed things like canned food, moldy fruit, and a pigeon instead of the film’s star Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man: No Way Home). Those posters seemed to imply that Inside is going to be an odd, quirky film – but now that a trailer for Inside has arrived online, it doesn’t appear to be as off-the-wall as the posters were. Instead, it looks like this thriller is going to be quite intense, carried by another terrific performance from Dafoe. You can watch the trailer in the embed above.

How do you escape the inescapable? An art thief is about to learn that nothing is as easy as it seems in “Inside.” The film’s emphasis focuses on a lone character — played by Willem Dafoe — who deals with isolation, fear, and unexpected dangers. It hails from writer Ben Hopkins and director Vasilis Katsoupis; this marks the filmmaker’s first fictional feature film, having previously directed the documentary “My Friend Larry Gus.”
Katsoupis, along with producer Giorgos Karnavas, were incredibly excited about star Willem Dafoe’s participation.

In terms of the sheer range of directors he has worked with, there may be no more impressive a career than that of Willem Dafoe. In between his recent collaborations with Abel Ferrara, Wes Anderson, Robert Eggers, Walter Hill, Lars von Trier, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Guillermo del Toro, he’s also found time to work with new voices in cinema. The latest is Vasilis Katsoupis, whose debut feature Inside will open this March from Focus Features and the first trailer has now arrived.
Scripted by Ben Hopkins, the film tells the story of Nemo (Dafoe), an art thief trapped in a New York penthouse after his heist doesn’t go as planned. Locked inside with nothing but priceless works of art, he must use all his cunning and invention to survive.

A title that we thought might break into Cannes or Venice will probably instead be considered for the upcoming Sundance or Berlinale line-ups as the Focus Features folks have landed Vasilis Katsoupis‘ Inside and are planning a March 10th theatrical drop.

Following the tragic passing of Gaspard Ulliel, one of the projects he was attached to has found a new actor. 1917 star George MacKay will now lead Bertrand Bonello’s The Beast alongside Léa Seydoux, Variety reports. Set to begin in August, the decades-spanning dystopian romance thriller is set in both Paris and California and will film in French and English. “Set in the near future where emotions have become a threat,” the synopsis reads, “Seydoux stars as Gabrielle, a woman who has finally decided to purify her DNA in a machine that will immerse her in her past lives and rid her of any strong feelings. But when she meets Louis (Mackay) and although he seems dangerous she feels a powerful connection to him as if she’d known him forever.”

Ben Whishaw is to lead Limonov, The Ballad of Eddie, a feature from Kirill Serebrennikov, the Russian filmmaker whose Tchaikovsky’s Wife will play at Cannes.
The film penned by Serebrennikov, Ben Hopkins and Cold War‘s Paweł Pawlikowski is inspired by Emmanuel Carrère’s best-selling novel and tells the story of Eduard Limonov’s life and journey through Russia, the U.S. and Europe during the second half of the 20th century.
Limonov was many things, a revolutionary militant, a thug, an underground writer, a butler to a millionaire in Manhattan, but also a switchblade-waving poet, a lover of beautiful women, a warmonger, a political agitator and a novelist who wrote of his own greatness.
Serebrennikov’s Tchaikovsky’s Wife (Zhena Chaikovskogo) is in competition at Cannes, the fourth from the Russian director following Petrov’s Flu last year, 2018’s Leto and 2016’s Uchenik.

It looks like this game is over. Netflix has cancelled the Hoops TV series so, there won't be a second season.
An adult animated comedy series, the Hoops TV show was created by comedian and singer Ben Hoffman. The voice cast includes Jake Johnson, Ron Funches, Cleo King, Natasha Leggero, A.D. ★★☆☆☆Coming to you from a newly autonomous republic somewhere in the vast plains of the Caucasus is a real oddity. Lost in Karastan - the latest offering from British filmmaker Ben Hopkins - is difficult to pin down. Modelling itself as a satirical black comedy interrogating the nature of creativity, art vs. love, and what constitutes national identity, Hopkins ventures into unknown Eastern European territory and gets completely lost. Without a map, or any semblance of a plan, he leaves his audience helplessly stranded there. Despite apparently noble intentions, and what must constitute a healthy dose of personal experience from the film-within-a-film scenario chosen by the director and his co-screenwriter Pawel Pawlikowksi, Lost in Karastan is a frustratingly fruitless endeavour.

Much like the title suggests, Ben Hopkins’ Lost in Karastan is having an identity crisis. At times appearing like a bonafide romantic comedy, we are continuously distracted by the narrative concerning the ignorance of a young and desperate filmmaker. While there are some noteworthy, comedic moments, implemented with a certain subtlety, the tone remains frustratingly inconsistent.
