This week Killer Instinct with Chris Hansen spotlights the murder of poker club owner Paul Horn, who was shot five times in his own home. Paul Horn had made a bit of a reputation for himself as a high-stakes poker player but he decided that going into the poker business would be more lucrative and stable. To this end the 54-year-old he set business with Daniel Teitelbaum and they opened a private poker club in Grove City. However, the partnership did not go well and Teitelbaum tried to sue Horn for misappropriating funds. On March 10, 2011, just before Horn...read more...

Collaborative crooners Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett are at it again, duetting on the new single "Nature Boy." It arrives one week before the pair's latest album, "Cheek to Cheek," is released. Gaga kicks things off on the torchy piano-led ballad, before some strings and a flute come in to sweeten the deal. Then Tony arrives and the magic really happens. It's not exactly "Do What You Want With My Body," but Gaga and Bennett generate a different kind of heat. It features contributions from the late Paul Horn, the jazz flautist who worked with Bennett, Cole and other icons since the '50s. Listen to it here: Originally performed by Nat "King" Cole, the tune was also featured in 2000's "Moulin Rouge!," as pointed out in a tweet from Gaga. She also revealed that "composer Eden Ahbezwas part of a sub-culture of nomadic hippies! We channelled our own Gypsy lives in this performance.

Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett will release their album of jazz standards, “Cheek To Cheek” on Sept. 23. The first track, a remake of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes,” came out today via iTunes. The odd bedfellows formed a mutual admiration society three years ago and seemed besotted with each other’s talent ever since Gaga recorded “The Lady Is A Tramp” with Bennett for his “Duets II” album. The album features the twosome singing in tandem and solo as they work through the Great American Songbook, performing such classics as “Lush Life,” “Anything Goes,” “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” and “Sophisticated Lady.” Bennett, of course, helped bring much of the Great American Songbook alive over his seven-decade career. It turns out that Gaga grew up on the American standards. “It was very important to Tony that this was a jazz record,” Lady Gaga said in a statement.

SAG-aftra has hired Connecticut labor lawyer Susan Nelson to be the new executive director of the New England Local. Nelson, who will be introduced to the membership at the Local’s annual meeting April 1, succeeds Tom Higgins. Nelson previously served as counsel to the Connecticut State Employees’ Association, Seiu Local 2001 in Hartford. New England Local Co-Presidents Paul Horn and Doug Bowen-Flynn said that her lack of entertainment experience won’t hinder her. “With her excellent communication skills, we believe she’ll be a ‘quick study’ as she learns more about our industry and local," Horn and Bowen-Flynn said in a message to area members. “Nelson will be a great fit for the challenges and opportunities we face here in New England." Nelson, who started the job Monday, will oversee a staff of six at the New England Local.

The 14th annual Antimatter Film Festival in Vancouver, BC, Canada is an epic 9-day event of expanded cinema performances, feature-length documentaries an a ton of experimental short films and festivals.
There are seven feature documentaries screening including Marie Losier‘s hit The Ballad of Genesis & Lady Jaye, a profile of the pandrogenous entity, Breyer P-Orridge; and Chris Metzler & Lev Kalman’s popular Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, about the legendary ska punk band. Plus, there’s Adele Horne’s And Again and more.
On the expanded cinema front, Antimatter welcomes retrospectives of Kerry Laitala, who will be presenting a selection of her 3D light and motion experiments; and Roger Beebe will screen a series of multi-projector performances.
As for the short films, the real highlight of the fest is a screening of Jaimz Asmundson‘s trippy and powerful The Magus, a fictional/documentary hybrid of his father’s Satanic painting process.

I'm adding the make-up of the Venice Film Festival Horizons sidebar selections a little late to the site, I'm mostly curious to see the low ratio of films that'll be picked up from this section for the upcoming Tiff announcements. Deemed as re-branding of the section, a more eclectic melange of titles mixing short, medium length pics, documentaries film and feature length items, of the items that will generate the most interest are the opening and closing titles which were revealed the week before, but we should see media coverage mentions on Paul Morrissey's News From Nowhere, Jose Luis Guerin's docu Guest (I've yet to see 2007/2008's In the City of Sylvia) and Sion Sono's Cold Fish and short film offerings from Guillermo Arriaga, Isaac Julien and Clara Law. Horizons: Feature-length Works "Sleeping Beauty," Catherine Breillat (France, opener) "Oki's Movie," Hong Sang-soo (South Korea, closer) "The Nine Muses,...

While I missed listing the April 10 “Regional Youth Program” — which was technically the opening night — below is the lineup for the rest of Experiments in Cinema v.5.1. that will run April 14-18 at several venues in Albuquerque, New Mexico, including the Guild Cinema.
This is four nights and one day of some of the best cutting edge experimental films and videos being made today. Each night — and the day — is jam-packed with over three hours or of unique and intriguing short films made by filmmakers such as Sylvia Schedelbauer, Vanessa Renwick, Robert Todd, Penny Lane and Kerry Laitala. All told, there will 50 films from 13 countries screening, including 12 World Premieres.
Although Experiments in Cinema is truly an international event, festival director Bryan Konefsky is placing a special emphasis on regional filmmaking and has invited other festival directors and film curators to showcase works from their particular region. Montse Badia will screen Spanish experimental video,...

"Hollywood East" isn't the most imaginative nickname that Massachusetts' burgeoning film and television industry could have been tagged with, but the Bay State media have made it stick. And goofily optimistic though the title may be, Massachusetts has worked hard for it. In 2005, under Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican, the commonwealth was part of the first wave of states to institute film and television production tax credits. Romney's Democratic successor, Gov. Deval Patrick, expanded the credits two years later. The program now offers a 25 percent tax credit on all in-state spending—more generous than nearby New York, which offers a 30 percent credit only on below-the-line costs, but less generous than competing states such as Michigan, which offers a 40 percent credit. The result, according to industry insiders, has been a dramatic uptick in the number of productions shot in the state. The most high-profile growth has come in feature film production.

The 48th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival is another exciting celebration of underground film past and present, featuring two retrospectives of two master filmmakers and dozens of short films and features from some of the most gifted talents working today.
For the retrospectives, first, Kenneth Anger will be in attendance at the festival for two programs of his classic work, including Fireworks and Scorpio Rising. Plus, for the first Anger screening, the filmmaker will be joined on-stage by film critic Dennis Lim for a discussion of his work and career. The second retrospective is of the work of the late Chick Strand, who sadly passed away in 2009. Strand’s Angel Blue Sweet Wings (1966) will actually open the entire festival, then there will be two retrospective screenings of her work, the first of which will be presented by film scholar Irina Leimbacher.
