The only woman director to work in Hollywood in the 1950s, Ida Lupino earned full marks as a creative innovator and a positive force in the industry. It was a restrictive time for the movies: politically, socially, every which way. But Lupino’s independent film about a rape victim passed through the censorship gauntlet — as long as the ‘R’ word was never spoken, of course. Mala Powers is the distraught victim who tries to run away from life in the powerful drama, which remains valid and topical.

Growing up among his native Brooklyn’s brick-and-fire-escape facades in the 1930’s, production designer-to-be Albert Brenner often dreamed of the wide open spaces depicted in his favorite Saturday-matinee Westerns. At 16, he landed his first “art job”: dressing windows for a New York City department store.
Two years later, Brenner swapped mannequins for military service and flew in B-24 bombers until World War II ended in 1945. On the G.I. Bill, he attended Yale University, graduating with skills in drafting, and went into summer stock theater under designer Samuel Leve, toiling away on plays like “The Fifth Season” and gaining a union card in the process.

One of the best pictures to come out of Hollywood in the late 1960s, Sydney Pollack’s screen version of Horace McCoy’s hardboiled novel is a harrowing experience guaranteed to elicit extreme responses. Jane Fonda performs (!) at the top of an ensemble of stars suffering in a Depression-Era circle of Hell – it’s an Annihilating Drama with a high polish. And this CineSavant review ends with a fact-bomb that ought to start Barbara Steele fans off on a new vault search.

Two-time Oscar winner James Horner, whose emotive scores for modern classics including Titanic and Braveheart cemented him as one of Hollywood’s most adored composers, died in a California plane crash Monday, his agency, Gorfaine/Schwartz, has confirmed. The Los Angeles native was 61.
A beloved figure in the entertainment industry, Horner was perhaps best known for his work on the 1997 film Titanic, which won the Oscar for Best Picture. The James Cameron-directed romance led to two Oscar wins for Horner – one for original dramatic score, and the other for original song (shared with lyricist Will Jennings and performer Celine Dion) for “My Heart Will Go On.” His score sold 27 million copies worldwide, becoming a financial phenomenon in the composing world.

Yes, you'll do right hiding your face in your hands. You couldn't Laird Cregar your way out of this sad remake of I Wake Up Screaming.
You may think it a shame that the best mise-en-scène in the picture has you out of the spotlight and your face obscured. However that's just the type of capture I like best. This viewer prefers to focus on architecture, lighting, composition and the way they all come together to tell the story. Sometimes they create a far more rewarding visual treat than the other elements of the film.
This is an peek at the way I view films—looking past the plot and the stars to what intrigues me about cinema.
