When you are talking about the big slasher franchises of all time, the original 4, the Mount Rush-Gore if you will, it’s a losing argument to try and say any of the first films don’t hold up. Of course, I’m talking about Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. What you Can do is look at their many, Many, sequels and see what sticks and what doesn’t. Or you know, in our case, what stands the test of time and what doesn’t. Some of these are just schlocky fun and don’t need a critical reappraisal but a couple of them that have higher reputations that...

The They Live episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
I bet you thought when we started covering adaptations that we would be going to the Stephen King well more than a few times and believe me, we will. Today though, we are covering our second John Carpenter helmed adaptation after we discussed The Thing in the inaugural episode. While that one was pretty well known for being a more faithful adaptation of the book his hero Howard Hawks had adapted, not a lot of people may realize that They Live was sparked from a very short comic that adapted a very short story.
We came here to chew bubble gum and find out what the f*ck happened to this adaptation,...

There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.
In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.
Continuing the underlying social commentary Yuzna explored with Society, the film centers on hot-headed dentist Alan Feinstone. After catching his wife (Linda Hoffman) going down...

If you ever considered catching up with mammoths of world literature in a moviesque nutshell, this 1993’s Japanese animation may be a good way to tick off the Indian epic “Ramayana.” Yes, you’ve read it correctly. Indian classic made in Japan. It was marketed as an Indian-Japanese co-production, and Indian Ram Mohan, the co-director, aided a lot with culture-sensitive elements during the proceedings. However, the majority of the crew involved in this production were Japanese and all the work took place in Japan.

John Carpenter is deservedly known as a master of horror, but he often did not get his just due quick enough. So many of his films did not find a loving audience until after their theatrical releases, including The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, In the Mouth of Madness, and 1987’s Prince of Darkness, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.
The film is the second chapter of Carpenter’s “Apocalypse Trilogy”—which also includes The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness. Although it lacked the star power and larger scope of the other two films, Prince of Darkness still comes off as incredibly rich and complex. It’s a kind of movie you don’t see much of anymore, if at all.
According to Carpenter, Prince of Darkness came at a time when he was tired with the process of making big-budget studio movies. “And I longed...

I’m still astonished that you can own the so-called “producer’s cut” of Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers on 4K Ultra HD. It was the first bootleg movie I ever purchased, courtesy of eBay, as I believed that the murky DVD-r sourced from a generations-old VHS would be the only way to ever see the alternate footage from the franchise’s 1995 sixth installment.
Scream Factory shocked fans with the producer’s cut’s first official release as part of its 2014 Blu-ray box set, Halloween: The Complete Collection. They’ve done it again with The Halloween 4K Collection (1995-2002) box set, which features both the theatrical and producer’s cuts newly scanned in 4K from the original camera negative, presented in Dolby Vision with DTS-hd Master Audio 5.1 and Stereo options.

Jerry Smith has been a fixture in the horror world for years now as a writer for numerous sites as well as the most passionate supporter I know of Halloween 4. But there’s more to Smith than just his words and his love for horror movies - he’s also a talented musician who launched a new musical endeavor in 2020 called rainydaysforghosts. Smith is about to release a brand new EP this Saturday, called Division (which you can pre-order Here), making it the perfect opportunity to catch up with the multi-hyphenate to talk about all things horror, survival, the healing power of music, and Smith’s favorite scores.
Can you start off by talking about your love for horror and your love for music, and where that all stems from initially?
Jerry Smith: (T/W:) I was a child of divorce and would fly back and forth between my father and my mother.

Two more classic John Carpenter soundtracks are getting the vinyl treatment for fans of the horror director and composing maestro’s cult favorites. The scores for “Escape from New York,” the 1981 dystopian thriller starring Kurt Russell, and “The Fog,” the 1980 supernatural horror movie, will receive vinyl reissues from Waxwork Records in September.
The label previously released a new LP for the soundtrack for “The Thing,” which Carpenter also composed along with directing the film, that resurrected lost cues from the original score.
The “Escape from New York” score was written by Carpenter and co-produced by Carpenter and Alan Howarth. Howarth used equipment such as Arp and Prophet-5 synthesizers, plus a Linn Lm-1 drum machine, as well as an acoustic piano and Fender guitars, to create the film’s soundscape, while Carpenter composed the melodies on synthesizer keyboards. Howarth manually synchronized the equipment to picture while listening to a copy of the film’s dialogue.

Ever since seeing Bloodline at the 2019 Popcorn Frights Film Festival, I've had its infectious, synth-infused soundtrack stuck in my head, as the original music by Trevor Gureckis is like its own character in the film, giving the serial killer story a deadly pulse that hearkens back to some of the most memorable collaborations between John Carpenter and Alan Howarth. With Bloodline—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack coming to digital via Lakeshore Records on September 20th (the same day the film will be released in theaters and on Digital and VOD by Momentum Pictures), we've been provided with an exclusive track from the film's score to share with Daily Dead readers.

If you’re a fan of John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, there’s a collector’s edition blu-ray box set coming from Shout Factory and Sacred Bones Records that you’ll probably want to get your hands on.
On top of the Blu-ray, Steelbook, and official lithograph artwork, it comes with a limited edition vinyl soundtrack featuring recent recordings of some of the film’s score by John Carpenter and Alan Howarth. I’ve included all of the details regarding this bundle below.
I’ve seen this movie a thousand times and it’s one of those films that never gets old. No matter what, it has always entertained me.

It’s one of the great “what ifs?” in horror cinema: what if Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris) had gone on to become the next Haddonfield killer after the shocking ending to Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers? Dressed in a clown costume, standing at the top of the stairs, bloody scissors in hand after stabbing her foster mother, Jamie seemed like a young Michael Myers reincarnated. If she wasn’t ready to take over for her uncle, she surely seemed ready to help him hack and slash his way through another Halloween. But like so many of the great “what ifs?” in the Marvel comic book series What If, the murderous Jamie Lloyd was more of a Halloween night one-shot than a fully realized story.

New Orleans based filmmakers Terror Optics have been churning out some “interesting” genre films in the last 15+ years beginning with the extreme horror Goreface Killer in 2002 and following it up with the likes of Goregasm and Grimewave. All of which pushed the boundaries of sex and violence, in the most low-budget way possible that is!
Terror Optics latest film, Silk Scream, once again helmed by founder Jason Matherne but this time written by Bill Heintz – who actually starred in the first Terror Optics film, the aforementioned Goreface Killer – is somewhat different from the companies previous efforts, eschewing the extreme nature of their prior films and delivering a movie that has more of an 80s-slasher meets Italian Giallo aesthetic… but with a Troma twist!

Since its initial release in 1988, John Carpenter's They Live has only gotten better with each passing year. One of the reasons it has endured as long as it has is the bone-rattling score by Carpenter and Alan Howarth, and Mondo's Death Waltz Recording Company is looking to obey fans of the film with a new vinyl release of the movie's music (featuring a remaster by Howarth himself).
Press Release: Austin, TX – Thursday, January 17, 2019 – Grab your sunglasses, your bubblegum, and your shotgun as Death Waltz Recording Company is bringing back John Carpenter and Alan Howarth's brilliant score to They Live. The soundtrack will go on sale January 30, 2019 at MondoTees.com.

There was so much good horror in 2018 that it was tough to pick just a few highlights. At the same time, the big standouts—the return of both Fangoria and Joe Bob Briggs, Jamie Lee Curtis in a new Halloween movie that was actually good—were so obvious that I’m guessing most of my colleagues making “best of” horror lists can’t avoid including them. I’m no different. Here are just some of my favorite things in the genre this year:
Hereditary: The horror movie of the year. Writer/director Ari Aster’s debut feature feels like the work of an accomplished veteran—totally sure of itself, totally in control, totally terrifying. Even before it becomes the scariest movie of 2018, it’s a compelling family drama about Toni Collette (giving arguably the best performance of any actor this year; if only the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences...

In the early 1980s, New York was grindhouse heaven: a hell of neon iniquity, with every alleyway harbouring some new nameless vice. Horror had a field day: the likes of Basket Case, The Driller Killer and Maniac captured the poverty and menace of those famous streets. With Halloween and The Fog under his belt, you’d think John Carpenter would have taken a similar horror route. But he chose a different direction. More akin to Walter Hill’s The Warriors, 1981’s Escape from New York is a bold and ambitious sci-fi action movie.
Kurt Russell plays Snake Plissken, an ex-military drifter who is about to be sent to Manhattan Island. It’s the future; the year is 1997, and NYC has been turned into a...

With Halloween nearly two weeks away now, we have another great new batch of horror and sci-fi Blu-rays and DVDs coming out this week that genre fans are undoubtedly going to want to add to their home media collections, as they are not only perfect to enjoy for the remainder of October, but pretty much any time of year. The two biggest highlights for me personally are Scream Factory’s absolutely stunning Steelbook editions of Halloween II (1981) and Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Kino Lorber has also put together a brilliant Blu-ray presentation of Trilogy of Terror as well.

Poor John Carpenter. Like nearly all of the truly great horror filmmakers, his movies are destined to be misunderstood in their time, only finding the proper appreciation several years after the fact when the rest of the world is finally able to catch up to what he’s doing. It’s not always the case, of course, as he has had a handful of commercial hits; for many years, his breakthrough movie Halloween was the most successful independent film ever made. It was the rare instance in which audiences were tuned in to what Carpenter was doing at the time he was doing it. Most of his other great films—and he has more great films than almost any other director working in the genre—took years to connect with the public. Don’t blame Carpenter for that. He’s a man ahead of his time.

Look out: John Carpenter's chilly tale of shape-shifting chaos at the South Pole creeps back with a new transfer and two fully stocked discs of extras old and new, including the bowdlerized Network cut, just for laughs. The picture still works like gangbusters -- the best monsters are still the gooey, rubbery pre-cgi kind. Halloween decorating is a serious business for my family. It started with my father pretending he was a Halloween prop on our porch and has since evolved into more elaborate decorations, lighting, and sound, making my family's home a must-see stop for trick-or-treaters every October 31st.
With the haunting season upon us once again, it's that time of year to embrace the horrors of home ownership and transform the usually friendly exteriors of our houses into frightening facades. While there are many ways to give the outside of your home a macabre makeover, one of the most important elements in creating a creepy attraction is lighting. Through my experiences scaring the neighbors over the years, I've put together a list of tips on the most efficient ways to use lighting and add in some new technology to your Halloween setup this year.
