Anyone hungry for more Beef?
After a packed nine days in which the Netflix dark comedy swept at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, the show was officially crowned best limited series at the 2023 Emmys on Monday night, with seven additional trophies between the Primetime and Creative Arts ceremonies, including best actor for Steven Yeun and best actress for Ali Wong as the feuding duo Danny and Amy, respectively. The next day, creator Lee Sung Jin – who personally also won for writing the pilot and directing the finale – phoned The Hollywood Reporter to talk about lessons learned as a first-time showrunner as well as what he would do with a potential (not yet officially greenlit) second season.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
How was the rest of your night after the show ended?
We left the HBO party around 1:30 [a.m.], so it wasn’t too late.

In “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, Meryl Streep plays Loretta Durkin, a struggling actress who is cast in Oliver Putnam’s (Martin Short) new musical “Death Rattle Dazzle.”
And while the season has been slowly pulling back the layers of Loretta, production designer Patrick Howe and showrunner John Hoffman revealed to TheWrap that there was more information about her character that was ultimately left on the cutting room floor.
“My original information that I had to go on for designing a small modest studio apartment is that she lived there for 40 years, she was a gift wrapper at Macy’s, very modest means, always trying to get acting jobs and never landing anything more than a small, off, off, off Broadway part,” Howe told TheWrap. “And so we filmed all this footage of her wrapping gifts and at the Macy’s gift wrap department but then decided to just...

This story about the Emmy-nominated songs first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In the Emmys’ Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category, it pays to be funny. After all, this is the category where the winners include “Antidepressants Are So Not a Big Deal” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “It’s Not Just for Gays Anymore” from the Tony Awards, “Dick in a Box” from “Saturday Night Live” and, um, “I’m F—ing Matt Damon” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
Over the past two decades, comedic songs have won more than two-thirds of the time. Most years, they’ve landed the majority of the nominations.
This year, four of the six nominees are from comedies: “Fought & Lost” and “A Beautiful Game” from “Ted Lasso,” “Your Personal Trash Man Can” from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Now You Know” from the TV movie “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Virgin River fans will have to wait a little longer for Season 5, which will premiere this fall, Netflix announced in conjunction with its first ever upfront presentation Wednesday. And there is more news about the popular romantic drama, starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson — it is getting an early Season 6 pickup.
While it may be unexpected, the early renewal is not surprising.
Virgin River, based on the bestselling book series by Robyn Carr, has been among Netflix’s most successful series. Its most recent fourth season amassed 277 million hours viewed in its first 28 days, on par with Season 3, and held the top spot in the streamer’s Top 10 for two weeks.

Knowing producer Bill Lawrence has plenty of benefits, including access to his address book full of connections. That’s according to composer Tom Howe, who worked with Marcus Mumford and Ben Gibbard on the themes songs for two of Lawrence’s shows, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso and Shrinking, respectively.
“When we started in Season 1 [of Ted Lasso], Marcus and I were sort of put together by a great friend of Jason’s [Sudeikis] and I knew Bill [Lawrence]. We met for breakfast and we got on and he invited me to his house to hang out. So I flew from [Los Angeles] to Devon, which is in the middle of nowhere in England, and stayed there for 10 days with Marcus. Considering I had only met him once for breakfast, it was quite interesting,” Howe told Deadline during a panel for the shows at Sound & Screen: Television.
“We hung out for 10 days having no footage or scripts or anything.

Production designer Patrick Howe joined “Only Murders in the Building” in Season 2, but there’s a very good reason he felt right at home. “I looked at the art department and went, ‘Oh, my God, I have worked with every single person in this art department except the production designer,'” Howe tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Somehow I had heard that everybody wanted to return, which is a good sign. That means you had to have had fun or there was something you loved about it if you wanted to go at it again because all Season 1s are really difficult to pull off.”
Much like how subsequent seasons of a series delve deeper into characters, Season 2 of the Hulu murder mystery reveals a whole lot more about the Arconia. Howe and his team, including set decorator Rich Murray, had to design secret passageways, hidden elevators and previously unseen apartments,...

The electric comedy series "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is set to deliver a gloriously satisfying conclusion in its fifth and final season on Prime Video. Known for its blustering pace and whip-smart dialogue, the show offered a glimpse into the life and career of a housewife turned comedienne during one of the most exciting time periods in New York City's history. The swinging sixties opened up new avenues and opportunities for entertainers of every ilk, who flocked to Greenwich Village to appear on stage in hip, smoke-filled clubs like the infamous Gaslight Café on MacDougal Street. Winning numerous awards over multiple seasons, series star Rachel Brosnahan took inspiration from a number of performers to bring Midge Maisel to life when it was her time to shine in the spotlight.

Camila Cabello has a soft spot for this The Voice contestant. On the Sept. 27 episode of the hit NBC singing competition show, the Fifth Harmony alum was shocked after hearing contestant Tanner Howe's vocal abilities during the blind auditions. Why? Because he sounded just like her ex-boyfriend Shawn Mendes while belting out his hit "Mercy." "Is that my—is that Shawn up there?" Cabello asked her fellow coach Blake Shelton, appearing for a moment to honestly believe her former flame was auditioning behind her. "I thought that was Shawn." Following Howe's performance, Cabello congratulated him and admitted, "I was like, 'Is Shawn onstage right...

Newest “The Voice” coach Camila Cabello heard a familiar tune during Tuesday’s Blind Auditions — and things got a little awkward!
When Tanner Howe took the stage to try and impress the coaches with his rendition of Shawn Mendes’ hit, “Mercy”, Cabello recognized her ex’s track straight away.
“Is that my… Is that Shawn up there?” she asked her fellow coaches as they listened. “I was like, is Shawn onstage?”
While she didn’t turn her chair for Howe, and her fellow coaches made him sweat it out a little, the performance ultimately earned chair turns from Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and John Legend, who noted that maybe the song hit a little too close to home for Cabello.

Virgin River logged a second week as the most-streamed title in the U.S., according to Nielsen, and Stranger Things and The Gray Man also repeated in second and third place, respectively.
The entire Top 10 for July 25-31 was comprised of Netflix films and series, which used to be a weekly pattern but has become more rare. Because of the delay built into Nielsen’s reporting process, streaming numbers for House of the Dragon on HBO Max will not be out for another three weeks, but that title is one of a few in August likely to disrupt the all-Netflix nature of the chart.
Viewership for Virgin River, which just added a fourth season, fell just 9 from the prior week to come just shy of 2.4 billion minutes of streaming. Stranger Things, most of whose fourth season premiered in May, slipped 19, while Russo Bros. spy action movie The Gray Man declined...

Virgin River is acknowledging its shortcomings. Jinny Howe, Netflix's head of drama, recently admitted that "more diversity and inclusion" is a priority for the romantic drama. The series, which focuses on the ups and downs that underpin the small, titular town, has only few actors of color and recently introduced the show's first LGBTQ+ characters in season four. "Without getting specific, I will say that that continues to be a focus," Howe said in an interview with Deadline Aug. 23. "Some of our early casting conversations for season five, I think it's fair to say that that is going to continue to be a focus and something the audience will get to...

Virgin River has been a huge hit for Netflix since its launch in 2019.
The romantic drama landed a two-season renewal last year, keeping it on the air through its fifth season.
With Virgin River Season 4 recently wrapped, there have been questions about whether the show will end with its fifth season.
Netflix tends to end shows before they get to a fifth season, unless they are global hits.
Thankfully, Jinny Howe, the Netflix drama head sees "longevity and growth" ahead, meaning that there's a good chance the show will continue for a sixth season.
However, Howe wants the show to continue "as long as the audience asks for it and shows up."
“We see with Season 4 that the fandom is very strong and growing in many places as well,” Howe told Deadline.
“It feels like, based on what we’re seeing with Season 4 and the anticipation for Season 5, that there...

Serendipity is a key narrative device in romantic storytelling, and it played a role in Jinny Howe’s 2018 move to Netflix after more than 13 years at John Wells Productions. During her job interview, she professed her love for lush romances, especially from her beloved Jane Austen/Regency era, and after she was hired, she got to work on Bridgerton‘s maiden season as her first project.
She followed the Shondaland Regency romance drama with two female-driven limited series, Shondaland’s Inventing Anna and John Wells Prods.’ Maid. Before any of the shows had premiered to become global hits, Howe was promoted in fall 2020 to Head of Drama, Development, overseeing development of all drama series outside of the Spectacle + Event area and those coming out of Netflix’s roster of overall deals.

Taylor Swift almost met Bella Swan.
The “You Belong With Me” singer asked “Twilight: New Moon” director Chris Weitz to appear in the 2009 film as an extra. Weitz, however, turned her down, saying that Swift’s superstar presence would be distracting in the franchise installment starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.
“The craziest one of all those was to hear that Taylor Swift was a huge Twi-hard, and actually Taylor Swift and I had the same agent at the time and he said, ‘Taylor would like to be in this movie — not because of you, but she’s a Twi-hard,'” Weitz revealed during “The Twilight Effect with Ashley Greene and Melanie Howe” podcast. “‘She would be someone at the cafeteria or the diner or whatever, but she just wants to be in this movie.'”
Swift was also dating “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner at the time before calling it...

The new season of “Only Murders in the Building,” currently streaming on Hulu, sees the trio of amateur sleuths and residents of New York’s Arconia apartments played by Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin becoming suspects in a new crime — the killing of Bunny Folger (played by Jayne Houdyshell).
Production designer Patrick Howe was told by show co-creator John Hoffman that Bunny’s apartment would need to be a new set for the season. “It hadn’t even registered that the character was dead. In all my years of designing, I don’t think I’d ever designed for a dead person,” Howe says.
Bunny had been a longtime resident of the Arconia and the president of the building’s co-op, so Howe looked to influences from luxury interior designers Bunny Williams and the late Mario Buatta to create a look of settled affluence.

[Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 2, Episode 5.]
This week’s episode of “Only Murders in the Building,” titled “The Tell,” is a literal blast to the past. Mabel (Selena Gomez) hosts a party for her new art gallery friends, including possible paramour Alice (Cara Delevingne). But the party soon goes off the rails when Oliver (Martin Short) sees an opportunity to play his favorite 1970s parlor game, Son of Sam. Soon, the audience is transported to a fictional ’70s landscape as only Oliver can envision it.
Though the episode takes place in Mabel’s apartment, it’s an opportunity to highlight Oliver’s past, and how much of it has influenced the present. A more realistic depiction of the ’70s is found during a flashback to Oliver in his younger, poorer days. Though the camera doesn’t pick up exactly how destitute Oliver once was, production designer Patrick Howe wanted...
