Dock Ellis was an All-Star pitcher for the powerhouse Pittsburgh Pirates teams of the early 1970s, but he’s best known for a rather dubious athletic feat. On June 12, 1970, he pitched a no-hitter, one of only 286 in the history of the game. But most likely, his gem was the only one recorded while under the influence of LSD.
Ellis’s athletic accomplishments, his civil-rights activism, and post-baseball career—when he sobered up and counseled other addicts—are part of a new documentary that opens in theaters today, No-No: A Documentary. But there’s no getting around the LSD no-hitter. Ellis...

Alex Rodriguez figures to have a one-of-a-kind day on Monday. He'll receive a lengthy suspension from baseball and then head to the ballpark to play for the New York Yankees for the first time this season. A-Rod's suspension, likely through the 2014 season, was to be announced as part of Major League Baseball's latest drug investigation, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press. Major League Baseball informed the Yankees on Sunday that A-Rod will be suspended for his links to a clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no statement was authorized.

Among the seminal progressive rock groups of the late '60s and early '70s, Yes has undergone its share of personnel changes. The group started out with Chris Squire (bass), Peter Banks (guitar), Jon Anderson (vocals), Bill Bruford (drums), and Tony Kaye (keyboards), and released two albums, the eponymous Yes, and Time and A Word. Banks either left or was fired (it depends on who you believe), and was replaced with Steve Howe. [N.B. Peter Banks passed away in March 2013.] This new line-up produced just one album, The Yes Album.
Kaye left due to band friction, and was replaced by Rick Wakeman. This line-up produced two albums, Fragile and Close to the Edge -- the latter being the band's tour-de-force, and one of the most revered progressive rock albums of all time (see my Cc article, The Absolutely Essential Progressive Rock Albums), as well as one of the first albums on which the entire first side...

Asia: XXX (Frontiers)
That title's not triple-x as in porn, it's Roman numerals marking this supergroup's thirtieth anniversary (though I bet the confusion will increase this page's hits). Yup, three decades ago, "Heat of the Moment" was a massive hit. However, critics have tended to dislike Asia, either for dealing in pop rather than the glorious prog-rock of its members' previous bands -- Yes, Elp, and King Crimson -- or (if said critics are on the other side of the great divide) as dinosaurs still too proggy for naysayers in the post-punk era. Not this critic, through; I have always enjoyed John Wetton's voice, layered vocal harmonies, and melodic sense in every context, and never found Geoff Downes's keyboards and catchy songwriting/production the sacrilege that purist proggers did.
While there are some slight production differences from thirty years ago, basically this third studio album since the original lineup (Wetton,...

Back in February, we brought you the news when William Shatner was is in the recording studio, putting together his “flying in space” themed rock concept album titled Seeking Major Tom. Shatner hit the studio with the likes of Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society), John Wetton (King Crimson), Peter Frampton, Bootsy Collins, Ian Pace (Deep Purple) and Steve Howe (Yes) to record his version of some classic space-themed rock songs.
One of those songs is one of the most iconic and no doubt legendary rock anthems of all time, Queen‘s epic Bohemian Rhapsody. What would a video for Shatner’s version of that tune look like? I’m glad you asked… check it out below!

Last week I ran a lengthy first part of my Steven Soderbergh interview, primarily about the movie Contagion. Soon aftewards, the film opened number one at the box office by a wide margin and clearly there is a direct line between the two. Steve, next time you are in town the cherry lime rickeys are on you.
Our conversation went far beyond the usual shilling for new product, so now that the news cycle promoting Contagion has run its course, I’d love to share the rest of our discussion on a multitude of topics.
For a guy whose won every award imaginable and has the acclaim of both mass audiences and “the elite,” I can’t overstate just how down-to-earth and agreeable Mr. Soderbergh is. What doesn’t come across in print is his directness – there’s a surprising lack of b.s. in his tone, and if he...

Captain Kirk is headed back to space.
William Shatner, the Emmy winning TV icon, announced the track listing and details for his new space-inspired cover album, Searching For Major Tom. The album will feature a large number of heavy metal covers, as well as songs by U2, Frank Sinatra, Queen and Pink Floyd.
Shatner has had a storied music career, producing confusing, parodied yet somehow enlightening song covers and original bits over the past 40+ years. His first album, The Transformed Man, raised eyebrows with its bizarre covers, which, in what would become his trademark style, boasted dramatic readings of lyrics over music. HIs best known track was a recording of Sonny & Cher's "Mr. Tambourine Man." Check out Urlesque's ranking of his ten best cover songs here.
Shatner announced the album via Twitter back in February.

One of the highlights of my trip to Whitby in October 2010 for the Hammer Horror Exhibition was meeting someone who once a teenage crush of mine - Caroline Munro. Still breathtakingly beautiful, the stylish former Hammer glamour girl and one-time face of those famous Navy Rum posters, is also a polite, well spoken and utterly charming lady who clearly has a lot of time for her fans. Not surprisingly I went weak at the knees when I met her; I guess schoolboy crushes never truly fade away!
Thanks to her stunning looks, Caroline could easily alternate from sexy heroine to even sexier villainess even if her soft English rose voice was often dubbed over with something more suited to her bad girl image. Sadly her screen potential was never fully realised, but despite not achieving the major film stardom she really deserved, her popularity among genre fans remains very high.

William Shatner ($#*! My Dad Says) is in the recording studio, putting together what is likely to be his most shat-tastic foray into the world of music. I know you’re thinking that there’s no way that he could possibly top his cover of the Elton’s John classic Rocket Man but, this just might.
Shatner is reportedly in the studio with the likes of Zakk Wylde (Ozzy, Black Label Society), Brain May (Queen), Peter Frampton, Bootsy Collins, Ian Pace (Deep Purple) and Steve Howe (Yes) putting together a “space” or “flying in space” themed metal album titled Seeking Major Tom.
Shatner recently took to Twitter after spending some time in the studio to heap some praise on Wylde:
“Zakk is one of the great guitarists who played with Ozzy Osbourne. A master playing a cover of Iron Man. He’s fantastic! I’m energized. Mbb”

William Shatner is working on another music project, and this time it's all about metal. Following a "space" theme, and titled Seeking Major Tom, Shatner is joining forces with some major hard rock icons for the new project, which is set to be released later this year. Essentially, the release is a covers album, but with covers brought together to tell the story of a concept album.
So far, Shatner has collaborated with Brian May (Queen), Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne/Black Label Society), Peter Frampton, Ian Paice (Deep Purple), and Steve Howe (Yes). Seeking Major Tom is said to be a collection of 18 "rock anthems" reinterpreted to tell the story that Shatner is putting forward on the album [...]...

Progressive rock supergroup Yes are to hit the road for their 40th anniversary tour with departed keyboard player Rick Wakeman's son Oliver as a new recruit.
Wakeman Sr. explained his reasons for not taking part in the 26-date North American tour in a post on his website, but it appears his son doesn't share his father's fears that Yes are touring too often.
He'll join band founders Steve Howe and Jon Anderson when Yes perform at Canada's Quebec City Festival in July at the start of the month-long trek.
In the explanation on his website, Rick Wakeman writes: "My major concern was that of over-touring, which I felt Yes had done since 2002 with far too many shows, especially in America which for me diminished the 'specialness' of the band."
Billboard.com reports this marks the fifth time Wakeman has quit the band.
