As a young musician, he had a fiery, fast playing style. When he got older, he sometimes switched to flugelhorn with a softer, melodic style.
Inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1994.

He studied music at the Arthur Jordan Conservatory and with the Indianapolis Symphony.
