After he had left the production team of the Carry On films in the early 1960s, he wrote two more speculative scripts, Carry On Under the Pier If Wet and Carry On Shylock Holmes, in the hope that he might be asked back one day.
After the war his ambition was to be a playwright and he wrote several plays including 'Here is the News' which didn't get beyond a tryout at Leatherhead but got good reviews and earned him a place at Pinewood Studios.
His wife Rita,, who spent 7 years as a nurse gave him many ideas for the script of Carry on Nurse.
