Originally funded through Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams has had one hell of a shelf-life. Based on The Great Giana Sisters, the classic Commodore-era bootleg version of Super Mario Bros; the franchise was reborn, as merely Giana Sisters, on Nintendo’s flagship DS handheld in 2009. Since then it has made its move to consoles with a big-screen update, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, which has appeared on numerous consoles since debuting in 2013 on the Xbox 360.
For those unfamiliar (where have you been?) Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams sees gamers play as Giana (whose sister Maria was retconned out of the game – becoming the “Princess Peach” of this series), on a journey to a fantastic world in which the characters different abilities are the keys to solving puzzles and defeating terrible monsters. Giana transforms herself, the soundtrack and even the world, with lightning speed to solve puzzles or make use of special abilities.

Before I jumped into Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams – Director’s Cut, I have to admit that I was a tad unfamiliar with the history of the series.
Originally released in 1987 for the Commodore 64, The Great Giana Sisters ran into legal trouble due to extreme similarities between it and Super Mario Bros. Then, after over 20 years, Spellbound Interactive revived the franchise with 2009’s Giana Sisters DS for the Nintendo DS.
Following the dissolution of Spellbound Interactive in 2012, the newly-formed Black Forest Games took to Kickstarter in order to fund Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. After a successful launch on last-gen consoles and Windows PC, the title has now come to current-gen consoles, complete with remastered graphics and additional content.
Similar to the events of the original Giana Sisters, Twisted Dreams sees the titular heroine’s sister, Maria, getting abducted into the Dream World. So once again, Giana must enter this strange place...
