Now that “Thor: Ragnarok” has made $121 million in its opening weekend, Taika Waititi plans to capitalize on his success in just the way you’d expect the director of “What We Do in The Shadows” to: by making a Nazi comedy. The New Zealand director has told Vice as much during an interview occasioned by his new film, though he’s tight-lipped about exactly what his new project entails.

After revealing that “one of my next films is a stop-motion film about the life and times of Michael Jackson’s chimpanzee Bubbles,” Waititi adds that “there’s also a smaller film that I’ve written that I’m going to try to shoot next year. It’s a Nazi comedy.”

Taika Waititi is topping the box office with Thor: Ragnarok. But if you haven't explored his back catalogue, you're really missing out.
A minor spoiler for Hunt For The Wilderpeople lies ahead (but it's something that happens very early in the film!)
After a troubled production, the second Thor film was regarded as one of Marvel Studios’ lesser movies. The character of Thor was not a big part of the Avengers movies either, and so the prospect of a third Thor film was not keenly anticipated. Then, about two years ago, Taika Waititi was announced as director, and suddenly people got excited.
This is not because Waititi was in Green Lantern, and people who were involved in that seem to try really hard to make a good superhero film, but because Waititi’s movies have been critically acclaimed across the world, and have broken box office records...

Aronofsky, Clooney and del Toro are heading to the Lido; Alberto Barbera reveals the ones that got away.
Ahead of the world’s oldest festival, the buzz is palpable once again.
However, the flavour to this year’s Venice line-up is noticeably different from recent editions with an emphasis on internationalism, discoveries and innovation over large canvas studio fare.
If last year’s Venice lineup was a veritable treasure trove of big name Us and international filmmakers, this year’s lineup has a slightly more tempered feel to it, which nonetheless remains full of intrigue.
In the last four years Venice has kickstarted major Oscar runs for four Us movies [Gravity, Birdman, Spotlight and La La Land], however last year, for the first time in three years, it missed out on hosting the best picture winner [Moonlight, which went to Telluride].

Venice Announces 2017 Lineup, Including ‘The Shape of Water,’ ‘Suburbicon,’ ‘mother!,’ and Many More
Will 2017 be the year that Venice gets its king-making mojo back? After a steady run of debuting recent best picture winners — from “Spotlight” to “Birdman” — the festival missed out on last year’s big winner, “Moonlight,” which bowed at Telluride. This year’s lineup is a promising one, and while it’s still very early in the process, it’s difficult not to pick through today’s announcement of the festival’s slate and not search for the big contenders.
As was previously announced, the festival will open with Alexander Payne’s social satire “Downsizing,” starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig. The festival will also play home to the premiere of the Netflix original “Our Souls at Night,” as part of their planned tribute to stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Annette Bening will lead the competition jury, ending an 11-year succession of male jury chiefs.

Exclusive: Film revolves around Muslim cleric whose life is overturned by the death of Michael Jackson in 2009.
Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawaris’s film and high-end TV production company iProductions has boarded Amr Salama’s drama Sheikh Jackson about a strict Muslim cleric obsessed with the late musical superstar Michael Jackson.
The move marks a first direct collaboration between iProductons and Egyptian producer Mohamed Hefzy at Cairo-based Film Clinic, whose recent credits include Clash, which premiered in Cannes Un Certain Regard last year, and the offbeat comedy Ali, The Goat And Ibrahim.
“It’s an interesting development in that it lays the foundation for a longer-term relationship between the two companies,” said Hefzy, hinting that other joint productions are on the cards.
Other Egyptian partners on the film, which is expected to debut at a festival this autumn, include Hani Osama’s The Producers.

That's right. Netflix is finishing up a deal for the film Bubbles. It's a stop-motion animated film about Michael Jackson's pet chimpanzee of the same name, and it looks to be one of the best films coming from Cannes Film Festival this year.
But what sort of madman came up with the idea to make a stop-motion film about Michael Jackson's chimp, you might ask? Well, that would be the brilliant mind of Taika Waititi, who is known for Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows, as well as helming the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok film. He's working on it with Mark Gustafson who worked on Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Variety reported that the deal is for worldwide rights and the price is just under $20 million. But thats not the only thing Netflix has been buying. They've been making some big buys at Cannes this year.

As we look back at what came before ‘Iron Man,’ we marvel at the miracle that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Earlier this week, the Fsr team brainstormed the plot of Avengers 4 based on the idea that its mysterious subtitle was a potential spoiler for the still unseen Avengers: Infinity War. It was a fun exercise that briefly allowed me to nerd out over a few spandex epics penned by personal favorites, Brian Michael Bendis and Jonathan Hickman. The resulting conversation spawned some excitement, and a good heap of cynicism as well…or better yet, apathy. How much further can the Marvel Cinematic Universe expand? Will Thanos ever sit up from his chair, and prove he’s the big bad Mad Titan comic book fanboys claim him to be? Next week, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will mark the 15th entry in Marvel’s unprecedented shared universe machine, and by the time we get to Avengers...

The Thor: Ragnarok and Hunt for the Wilderpeople director Taika Waititi will be teaming up with Emmy-winning director Mark Gustafson to co-direct an Anomalisa inspired animation of the infamous chimp that became best buddies with The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, Bubbles.
You read that right, Bubbles is getting his own film. The chimp was adopted by Jackson back in 1988 and didn’t leave his side for a number of years, not until 2003 when the chimp became an aggressive adult like all normal chimpanzee’s and could no longer be controlled. However, Waititi has stated that this is in no way a biopic on the monkey’s life.
“It’s an idea that fascinates me and one I want to develop further,” said Waititi. “Most people know I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan, so the main thing for me is to make sure it’s respectful of him and his legacy.

With Logan out in cinemas now, showcasing what will apparently be Hugh Jackman’s final outing in his 17-year cinematic run as Wolverine, some are understandably nostalgic about the legendary tenure. In a recent interview, screenwriter David Hayter – a key component of Fox's early X-Men movie franchise – discusses some casting prospects that the original production considered in director Bryan Singer’s genre-defining 2000 original film.

Speaking with THR, Hayter looks back on the days of the X-Men film's gestation.
Hayter, a name video game connoisseurs will recognise as the perennial voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear series, wrote the screenplay to 2000’s X-Men, based on a story collaboration with Singer and Tom DeSanto, later tackling sequel X2: X-Men United and Zack Snyder’s Watchmen.

Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has signed up to co-direct Bubbles, an off-beat biopic about Michael Jackson's pet chimpanzee. The Isaac Adamson-penned screenplay previously won first place on the 2015 Black List, Hollywood's annual rundown of the best unproduced scripts.
While a short film starring Joseph Fiennes as the King of Pop was condemned by fans and Paris Jackson and ultimately pulled from broadcast, Bubbles won't face similar criticism over the casting of Jackson: The movie will be a stop-motion film that combines 3D printing and puppetry, much like Charlie Kaufman's Anomalisa,...

The story of Michael Jackson’s famous pet chimpanzee will come to the big screen in a stop-motion film titled “Bubbles.” According to Deadline, Taika Waititi and Mark Gustafson will co-direct Isaac Adamson’s Black List script, which will “be told in the vein of Starburns-produced ‘Anomalisa.’”
“It’s an idea that fascinates me and one I want to develop further,” Waititi expressed. “Most people know I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan, so the main thing for me is to make sure it’s respectful of him and his legacy. I’m not interested in making a biopic; I want to focus on telling a story that blends fact and fantasy, about an animal trying to make sense of the world.”
The “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” helmer added that the film is not about the King of Pop, because that’s “not a story for me to tell — or...

Taika Waititi isn’t one to wait idly between projects. He’s still deep in post-production on Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, yet the writer/director/actor has already lined up his next gig. Alongside Mark Gustafson, he’ll co-direct Bubbles, a biopic centered around Michael Jackson’s chimp of the same name, based on Isaac Adamson’s acclaimed Black List screenplay.
How does one (or two) direct a monkey biopic, you might ask? Well, you animate it. Specifically, with stop-motion animation, in the vein of 2015’s perfectly phenomenal, incredibly powerful and totally, hilariously bizarre Anomalisa. The film will be brought to life through Starburns Industries, the very animation company which marvellously brought Anomalisa to existence. Here’s hoping they find the same success with this completely unusual, but deeply original and offbeat coming of age story as they did with their previous feature length triumph.

On the list of projects we figured would never get made, “Bubbles” is pretty high up there. The script by Isaac Adamson topped the 2015 Black List, and it’s certainly bold stuff, but given that it touched upon the terrain of Michael Jackson, we figured the potential controversy might be too great for anyone to touch it (just look at the episode of “Urban Myths” featuring Joseph Fiennes as the King Of Pop which was yanked from release following mountains of bad publicity).

President and Mrs. Obama welcomed trick-or-treaters to the White House for the last time on Monday, and you better believe they’re not leave-a-bowl-of-candy-on-the-porch types.
Thousands of visitors stopped by for a treat, and the historic structure received a fantastical new look for the occasion. Characters from famous children’s storybooks including Mother Goose, Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz make appearances in the larger than life decor, but Alice in Wonderland steals the show. James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

Time is not on our side, especially in the era of “peak TV.” Perhaps this is why networks are hopping onto the time travel bandwagon. At this year’s network upfront presentations in May, four of the five broadcast networks plugged shows that revolved around a time travel element at their core.
Taking journeys through the fourth dimension is a concept that has appeared in fiction since the late 19th century, popularized by H.G. Wells’ novel “The Time Machine.” The continued appeal of time travel boils down to wish fulfillment: the desire to visit other eras like a tourist, the yearning to relive or change the past, the curiosity about the future and the ability to squeeze more experiences into our ephemeral lives.
Although Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan disagree on whether time travel will someday be possible based on our apparent lack of visitors from the future, that hasn...

Low on nightmare fuel? Fill up your tank by reliving your scariest memories from The Real Ghostbusters, a truly twisted 80s cartoon...
The Real Ghostbusters was a pretty messed-up cartoon sometimes. I think that’s one of life’s universal truths. But it did, and it still feels so right to this day.

Derek Dingle gave a hint (before he hung up on me) that when I left Milestone 20 plus years ago. It was my lawsuit that prompted it all. Ok, that’s revisionist history if ever there was.
There was no lawsuit. And even if there had been, so fucking what?

This has got to be one of the most gloriously amusing character mashup designs ever! It's Spongebob Squarepants combined with Spider-Gwen. It was created by comic artist Scottie Young and he calls it "GwenBob SquareHoodie." In regards to the sketch, the artist says:
“As a kid who grew up reading Mad Magazine, the idea of parody mashups really appealed to me. The first sketchbook I ever filled was front to back drawings of Bart Simpson as every pop culture figure i could think of. Mike Tyson, Beetle Juice, Michael Jackson, Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan, Mc Hammer, etc. Pages and pages of Bart mash ups. “In the spirit of that kid I used to be and obviously still am, enjoy a new the next step of the Gwenvolution…or Gwenaissance…Gwenmagedeon… or Gwhatever. :)”
I enjoyed this sketch so much that it’s currently my iPhone wallpaper.

What's this? What's this? It's a "Nightmare Before Christmas" anniversary. 22 years ago today, the Tim Burton-produced film opened in theaters. The stop motion musical has become a lucrative property for Disney, but upon its 1993 release, the House of Mouse put "Nightmare" under its Touchstone Pictures banner because the studio worried it was "too dark, too scary" for kids, director Henry Selick recalled. "Their biggest fear, and why it was kind of a stepchild project, was they were afraid of their core audience hating the film and not coming, when in fact once kids found out about it, it connected with them as well as Tim's regular fan base."
