Key highlights this February on the essential, alternative streaming service Arrow include a second season of films from the legendary Brazilian director José Mojica Marins, a devilish double-bill from Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia, a season of wonderfully weird short films, Valentine’s Day done Arrow-style, and much more.
In February, Arrow presents a season of bite-sized shocks in the form of the very best wild and weird short films, including Smile, the extraordinarily imaginative and disturbing award-winning short from director Joanna Tsanis; as well as The Wyrm of Bwlch Pen Barras, a Welsh language folk horror film about modern Wales, rooted in the country’s rich mythology, shot on 16mm and featuring a score by Cian Ciaran and Dafydd Ieuan from The Super Furry Animals; and ab adaptation of the famous short story by W.W. Jordan Peele's meteoric ascent in the film industry has landed him squarely on the map as one of the rare figures -- alongside proven talents such as Christopher Nolan, M. Night Shyamalan, and a select few others -- who's able to bring in audiences to original genre movies by virtue of their name alone. But Peele's actual directing work really only scratches the surface of what he brings to the table. In addition to lending his voice to animated movies like "Wendell & Wild" and "The Bob's Burgers Movie," he's also used his considerable influence to set up his own production company and help get several other projects off the ground.
By now, seeing the evocative logo of Monkeypaw Productions before his and other movies has become a familiar sight, conjuring images of the famous horror short story about the mystical item that grants wishes... at a cost. For Peele,...

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains mild spoilers for “Wonder Woman 1984.”
For the past nine months, since a real-world viral pandemic swept the planet and forced the shutdown of civilization as we know it, we’ve been reading about how this or that motion picture is “the movie we need right now.” Movies don’t solve global health crises, but they can distract and inspire us. They can bring us together when we’re apart and heal the divisions that define our times.
I suppose “Wonder Woman 1984” can achieve some of those things, but mostly it reminds us how badly we could use a superhero right now — a fantasy turn-back-time and fix-the-situation savior — and in that sense, it’s at once a fizzy pop-art distraction and a major downer. Put another way, if a nuclear bomb detonates in downtown Manhattan, you don’t run out to watch a Bond movie to feel better.

Pet Sematary, a horror fantasy, is a remake of the 1989 film of the same name. The story is based on a horror novel authored by Stephen King, which in fact was inspired by the short story, "The Monkey's Paw", written by W.W. Jacobs in 1902.
The narrative explores the ramifications of grief, the choices people make when they are hurting and the irony of good intentions.
The film begins this way: In search for a quieter life, Doctor Louis (Jason Clarke) from Boston moves into a large house at the edge of the woods in rural Maine. He is accompanied by his family which includes his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz), daughter Ellie (Jete Laurence), son Gage and his daughter's pet cat Church.?
After the family moves into their new home, Ellie finds a way down a path behind their house, which leads to a strange cemetery which is named Pet Sematary.

All you need is a little luck to get what you’re really wishing for! The short film adaptation of the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” is casting a supporting actor in Melbourne. Plus, a political stage drama, a senior grad film, and a workplace education program also all have supporting roles available. “The Monkey’S Paw”Blue Pen Productions and Penny Moore are now casting the short film “The Monkey’s Paw.” Adapted from a short story by W.W. Jacobs, “The Monkey’s Paw” is a morality tale set in England during 1910 about an owner of a monkey’s paw who is granted three wishes, but the wishes come with an enormous price for interfering with fate. A male actor, aged 60–69, is wanted to play the supporting role of Frank Brown, a former office clerk and family man who is now comfortably retired. An English accent is required for the role.

Could this be retitled “Dial ‘F’ for Fog?” Jean Simmon’s greedy maid blackmails her employer Stewart Granger with proof that he murdered his wife, kicking off a criminal ‘deadlock’ in a London household. The cold-fish schemer Granger ponders his next murderous move while Simmons enjoys playing the lady of the house — having dared to leapfrog two social classes, she hopes that her victim will respond with kindness, not homicide. This gothic domestic murder tale should be required reading for marriage counselors.

[Editor’s Note: The following review of “Doctor Who” Season 10, Episode 2, “Smile,” contains spoilers.]
The Rundown
The Doctor and Bill’s chemistry continued to be perfect even though this was only their first official adventure together. Taking place millennia into the future and on a far-off planet that appeared ideal except for its lack of inhabitants, the episode sneaked in an examination of human nature and cultural fluency within its murder-mystery trappings. This jaunt wasn’t so much about whodunit but why, and despite the “robots taking over” plot, it was the human colonists’ reaction the gave us chills.

What’s worse than a man telling a woman to smile? A robot demanding you smile or else it will kill you and use your bones for calcified fertilizer. Regardless, forcing a smile under duress is just psychologically disturbing even if you don’t factor murder into it.

When you think of short stories like W.W. Jacobs’ “The Monkey’s Paw” or Richard Matheson’s “Button, Button” (adapted to the small screen for The Twilight Zone and big for Richard Kelly’s underrated The Box), dark images of death are conjured. The consequences of earning personal reward come at great cost to those you may or may not know. They concern selfish acts that will incite chaos and a purveyor of their too-good-to-be-true opportunities who relishes in watching the destructive path cut by fate’s unyielding need to balance the scales explode. But what if this story was flipped? What if instead of supernatural dread at the hands of a grotesque figure seeking moral bankruptcy, the chance to alter destiny came from a sweet elderly couple with God-like omniscience?

He's been accused of a brutal murder that he didn't commit or witness, so now Mills is going to use that infamous skillset to hunt and find the real killer, all while evading the authorities who'd put him behind bars and his film franchise on hiatus. Cast: C.J. Thomason (Jake), Stephen Lang (Tony Cobb), Daniel Hugh Kelly (Gillespie), Michelle Pierce (Olivia), Corbin Bleu (Catfish), Charles S. Dutton (Detective Margolis), James Minor III (Cory Cobb), Andy Favreau (Kevin)
Anyone that is familiar with the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” knows where the premise of this flick from Chiller Films is headed. It’s a pretty respectable premise though. Horror has always had a cautionary tale basis at its deepest foundations, and this is a timeless morality story that has been given a contemporary spin. Not the first time it’s been done for sure, but if it’s done well, I can definitely roll with it. This version takes place in New Orleans, which happens to be one of my favorite locales for a horror film anyway,...

Unfortunately, I live in one of those areas of the United States that is slow to pick up channels like Chiller, FearNet and even Robert Rodriguez’s new network El Rey. One carrier might carry the network or maybe every carrier except for mine. Regardless, Scream Factory – the best in the business in genre home entertainment – is eliminating the obstacle of seeing Chiller’s original content by bringing last year’s The Monkey’s Paw to Blu-Ray & DVD. The film is directed by Brett Simmons (Husk) and has a screenplay by Macon Blair (who is amazing in Blue Ruin but you’ve seen his acting abilities in Murder Party and, more recently, Hellbenders) based off of W.W. Jacobs’ original short story. We have the full details on when you can get your paws on The Monkey’s Paw.

Who knows if Multiplayer will be any good? Well, we can look at the past video projects of Squidjib Productions. I like their minute-long zombie chick shorts (they need to make more than the two). We can also watch the teaser trailer, which looks really low budget but promises a clever idea in place of great acting, cinematography and art direction. Also, we can sense the spirit coming from the people making it. I know, spirit doesn’t equal quality, but this is the kind of spirit that leads to at least fun cult classic, which brings movie and video game geeks together at, say, a Drafthouse theater for a good time and a special menu item of ketchup sandwiches. I love the concept here, which is a four-part anthology revolving around old Nintendo and Sega products. As the headline states, there is one story featuring a time machine made from a Genesis console. And...

Part vampire. Part zombie. Part slasher. Deathdream (1972) is a retelling of the classic W.W. Jacobs short story The Monkeys Paw about the danger of wishing a loved one back from the grave. Jacobs connection to homecoming war soldiers was more subtle but Deathdream makes the allegory explicit. The horror genre is often ahead of its time in expressing societal angst which may be why Deathdream has received such little credit for successfully imbuing the violent clash between war and peace in the person of a veteran.

Chiller Films' next original film, The Monkey's Paw, is making its way to the small screen on October 8th and IndieWire has premiered both the trailer and one-sheet.

The first trailer for writer-director Todd Lincoln's new supernatural horror movie, The Apparition, has been released online and it immediately reminded us of the anonymous quote that opens W.W. Jacobs's classic horror story The Monkey's Paw — "Be careful what you wish for, you may receive it." Though ostensibly a "haunted house" movie, wherein a young couple (Ashley Greene and Sebastian Stan) find their new home plagued by an evil presence and turn to an expert in the supernatural (Tom Felton) for aid, the new wrinkle to that old genre standby is that the "horrifying apparition" that plagues the couple was conjured into being by parapsychology students intent on proving that belief in the supernatural alone is enough for it to exist.

While it may appear to the casual viewer that Prisco (Mr. Five books. Shah.) is owning my ass in this race, it simply isn't true. I've just been a febrile mess lately and couldn't be bothered to write anything about my reads. If anyone is currently keeping count, I am tearing through book four.
So there.
Prisco chose a sci-fi writer's self-help tome to be his first read. I pick a collection of old fashioned ghost stories edited by Edward Gorey. I'm sure this has deeper meaning.
Edward Gorey was one of those artists/famous people that I dreamed of one day meeting. I love his ability to take the macabre and twisted (The Curious Sofa, anyone?) and make them elegant and just a wee bit quaint. However, I am glad I never got the chance to share a drink with the man, as I am sure he would have thought me a ninny,...

While doing the promo rounds for his “Drag me to Hell”, Sam Raimi talked about another intriguing movie that’s being developed in-house via his Ghost House Pictures — “The Monkey’s Paw”, based on W.W. Jacobs’ 1902 short story where a monkey’s paw grants its owners any wish they desire … at a price. It’s a great story, and has been enduring through the years, and I could be wrong, but isn’t Richard Kelly’s “The Box” sort of like a variation on “The Monkey’s Paw”? According to Raimi via SciFiWire, the script for their version of “The Monkey’s Paw” is currently being written David Kajganich and Tom McAlister, and is in the early stages. Writer David Kajganich currently has the horror movie “Town Creek” coming out with director Joel Schumacher, while McAlister, well, let’s hope Kajganich does most of the writing here. Raimi has no plans to direct the movie.
