Widely considered to be one of England’s greatest writers, Jane Austen died at the age of just 41, but had she not done, she would have been celebrating her birthday today, which feels like a good reason to reflect not only on her contributions to literature but on the cinematic legacy to which that literature has contributed. All these films are currently available for you to watch at home, and they range from direct adaptations of her work to more creative takes, as well as films inspired by her life and her creations. We hope that you find some of them inspiring.

A common theme in Austen’s work is the liberties which characters take in imagining the lives of others, and the author herself is at the sharp end of this in Julian Jarrold’s somewhat outré take on Jon Spence’s biography.

The crisis of leadership Britain has been plunged into over recent years merits sustained study as a cautionary tale. But it demands deeper and sharper analysis than is available in “This England,” a curiously indifferent six-part miniseries notionally centred on former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s handling of the initial coronavirus outbreak, currently limping out on Sky’s U.K. arm.
When Winterbottom’s Revolution Films announced the project (originally titled “This Sceptred Isle”) last year – with Kenneth Branagh unveiled as the project’s Johnson – speculation was rife. Would the series be an ensemble satire, along the lines of Winterbottom’s rambunctious “24 Hour Party People”? Or an artfully sober inquiry, in the vein of the director’s Amanda Knox-inspired “The Face of an Angel”? In fact, it’s neither: what we’ve got is a hurriedly assembled primetime procedural that undermines its claim to rigorous accuracy from the off...

Exclusive: Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name) hopes to revive his dream project to make a mammoth 10-episode television adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited.
Two years ago the director had assembled an all-star cast including Cate Blanchett, Ralph Fiennes, Andrew Garfield and Rooney Mara, to lead a 10-part prestige TV version of Waugh’s brilliant study of British upper-class decadence.
But the HBO and BBC production was shelved because of its cost. “It’s a very sad story,” Guadagnino told Deadline late on Sunday night, following a screening at the Telluride Film Festival of his latest film Bones and All, a shocking love story, starring Timothee Chalamet, Taylor Russell and Mark Rylance, about cannibals searching, longingly, for their next meal.

Dakota Johnson is speaking out about portrayals of her three-generation Hollywood legacy.
Johnson, the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson and granddaughter of Tippi Hedren, opened up about her family’s first reaction to watching biopic “The Girl,” based on Hedren’s tortured working relationship with Alfred Hitchcock, who used emotionally manipulative and physically distressing methods to elicit the performance he wanted.
“We sat at HBO, my family, and watched that movie together,” Johnson recalled to Vanity Fair of watching Sienna Miller portray Hedren in the 2012 film. “It was one of those moments where you’re just like, How could you not have warned us? We’re in a room with some execs. Maybe this warranted a little conversation beforehand?”
As for her grandmother’s reaction, Johnson added, “You look over and you see a woman who’s just been reminded of everything she went through, and it was heartbreaking.

TripleC, a gateway organization that helps deaf, disabled, and neurodiverse people access the arts and media, will receive a BAFTA TV Craft Special Award during the British Academy Television Craft Awards. Actor Cherylee Houston (“Coronation Street”) founded TripleC and with a group of friends including Melissa Johns (“Grantchester”), they have built a platform for making the creative screen industry more inclusive.
Johns and Houston said: “When we set up this organization five years ago, we were just a group of disabled and non-disabled creatives coming together to see if we could make a change. I don’t think we ever knew the size of impact that that seed of an organization would have on the lives of so many deaf, disabled and/or neurodivergent creatives. The recognition from BAFTA will support our drive for change and help ensure accessibility and inclusivity is high up on every agenda.”

Rome’s new concept Mia Market dedicated to international TV series, feature films, documentaries and more kicked off Wednesday in the Eternal City’s 17th century Palazzo Barberini with 1,700 registered industry execs – roughly 600 of whom have made the trek from abroad – and 350 new titles of various types, in development and production, on display.
At a press conference attended by Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini and all top Italian industry reps, organizers also boasted a 30% increase in completed films screening at the Mia film market where about 80 mostly European titles will be having their market – or, in some cases, even world – premieres.
While the Oct. 11-14 Mipcom market in Cannes is suffering a reduced presence, and the AFM this year has gone entirely online, Mia seems to be reaping the benefits of being conceived more congenially to how the global content industry is evolving.

Rome’s growing Mia market, dedicated to international TV series, feature films and documentaries, has secured a rich roster of fresh international product in various stages and announced a clutch of prominent U.S. and European execs set to make the trek for the mostly in-person Oct. 13-17 event.
While companies such as ITV Studios, Banijay and Fremantle are either bowing out or reducing their presence at the Oct. 11-14 Mipcom market in Cannes — and the AFM has gone entirely online — Mia seems to be succeeding in luring a robust group of international industry heavyweights. They are also boasting a 30% increase in completed films screening on its film market side while some 80 new European film, TV and doc projects will be pitched to prospective partners.

It’s odd that someone could equate freedom with being surrounded by a rabid throng of adoring fans lining entire city blocks. Yet, in one of the more striking sequences of “The Crown” Season 4, that’s what happens for Lady Diana (Emma Corrin).
The series shows her and Prince Charles’ (Josh O’Connor) 1983 diplomatic journey through Australia, making the argument that the trip managed to burnish her royal credential outside the boundaries of the United Kingdom while bringing a sense of momentary peace to a marriage in turmoil.
The climactic moment of Episode 6’s Australian excursion is that bustling crowd, butting up against police blockades just to get a glimpse of the new international star as she passes by. It not only marks one of the pivotal points in Diana’s season-long arc, it leads to one of the most exciting pieces of music that composer Martin Phipps has written for the show so far.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and in many ways, that would be British producer Suzanne Mackie. As an executive producer on “The Crown,” she has spent the better part of the past 10 years working on the hit Netflix series, taking on her share of controversy along the way. But you’d be hard pressed to find a cooler head: never mind Claire Foy or Olivia Colman, Mackie is the only queen who will see the whole show across its six seasons.
Mackie, who is this year’s recipient of Variety’s Achievement in Intl. TV Award, has shepherded the royal family period piece from the earliest seedling of an idea — pitched when the streaming giant’s eye-watering originals drive was still in its infancy, riding high on “House of Cards” — to the Golden Globe, SAG and Emmy-winning, agenda-setting hit it’s become, both for Netflix and the U.

With We Are Who We Are wrapping up, Luca Guadagnino is eying a new project and it looks like, after adding Scarface to his pipeline, it will be another remake. The Call Me By Your Name director is now attached to adapt Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel Brideshead Revisited, The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder, which was previously adapted in 1981 in an 11-part series for ITV and in 2008 in a feature film by Julian Jarrold.
The Daily Mail‘s Baz Bamigboye was first to report on Guadagnino’s project, which will take the form of a miniseries, with Deadline confirming, but noting some additional details were a bit premature. This includes the ensemble, which is said to feature Andrew Garfield as Charles Ryder, Joe Alwyn as Sebastian Flyte, Rooney Mara as Lady Julia, Cate Blanchett as Lady Marchmain, and Ralph Fiennes as Lord Marchmain. This year’s festivities kicked off with with a bang with the opening night gala which presented Alice Winocour’s beautifully atmospheric drama Proxima.
