The China-u.S. film relationship is set for a much-needed shot in the arm from the launch of Maverix Pictures. The company is a Hong Kong entity set up to finance and produce major international pictures on both sides of the Pacific.
Maverix is backed by Michael Lechner von Leheneck, an Austrian-born, Hong Kong-based billionaire, who has significant interests in mainland Chinese real estate development. Maverix Pictures, an affiliated company of the parent, Maverix Group Holding, was co-founded with Ian Jessel, who takes on the roles of president and CEO. Jessel is the Los Angeles-based former president of Spelling Films and Miramax Intl.
Five projects are already in advanced development. Jessel will be working closely with the leading L.A.-based talent and finance agencies to package the initial slate of films for worldwide release in 2021 and 2022.

Roadside Attractions has acquired U.S. rights to Hemingway’s Garden of Eden, directed by John Irvin and starring Mena Suvari, Jack Huston, Caterina Murino, Richard E. Grant, Matthew Modine and Carmen Maura. The screenplay was adapted from the Ernest Hemingway book by former Paris Review editor James Scott Linville, and is based on Hemingway’s final novel, a jazz-age set, erotically-charged romance that was published posthumously in 1986. Hemingway’s Garden of Eden was produced for Tranquil Seas by Lorne Thyssen and Timothy J. Lewiston. The acquisition was announced by Roadside Attractions co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff and Ian Jessel, president of Tranquil Seas, USA.
“Ernest Hemingway is one of a handful of genius writers whose work leaps from the page to the screen brilliantly,” said Cohen, “and his Garden of Eden is lush and vibrant, in the tradition of other great Hemingway adaptations like The Sun Also Rises.

During the first press screening here of "Creation," during a scene when Charles Darwin walks out of church during a sermon on the first book of Genesis, an audience member stood up and walked out. Was he offended by the film? There's no way to say. There were an unusually large number of walk-outs, but who knows if they were leaving for theological reasons, or to get in line for the screenings of "Bright Star" or "Fish Tank," or because of boredom? I hope it wasn't boredom. Although it's a movie with a good deal of talk, at least no one shouted out, "You lie!"
Charles Darwin as Paul Bettany
This will adamantly not be a review of "Creation," which will await its opening. It will be a discussion of some of the thoughts it inspires. I expected the film to be focused on Darwin's theory of the origin of...

As is my custom, I fell into a deep and dreamless slumber after arriving at the Hotel Splendid from the overnight flights. I was awakened two hours later by Chaz: "Pierre Rissient is downstairs!" If Barack Obama had been downstairs, I would have rolled over and buried my head in the pillow. But Pierre! My mentor of all things Cannes! Who knows more different people in the world of cinema than any other man! And there he was, in the little lobby of the Splendid, deep in thought with Laura Kim! Laura! Who in her days as a publicist always knew the skinny on all the good films in a festival, and touted them even if they weren't hers.
This is how Cannes works. At home, you read about the films and directors, but the moment you arrive in town the buzz takes over.
