Fifteen minutes into the debut episode of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s podcast, the power is knocked out by a bomb cyclone. Her guest, Jane Fonda, continues speaking, unaware the connection is lost, and Louis-Dreyfus frantically attempts to reconnect, amid a few choice swear words and a blaring home alarm.
Rather than edit it out, Louis-Dreyfus saw it as an asset and kept it in the episode: “It’s just funny. So, I figured why not? Let’s include it. Everybody can relate too. I was so tense.”
The Veep and Seinfeld star was inspired to create Wiser Than Me after watching the 2018 documentary Jane Fonda in Five Acts and reflecting that older women, despite having cultivated decades of wisdom, are rarely heard from. In each episode of the podcast, Louis-Dreyfus asks guests, including Diane von Furstenberg, Isabel Allende and Carol Burnett, about their careers and relationships, as well as their views on sex,...

“Crossroads,” Britney Spears’ first starring role in feature film, will be available on Netflix globally starting Feb. 15, the streamer announced.
The movie premiered on that same day in 2002, while Spears was fresh off the success of “Oops…I Did It Again” and “Baby One More Time” and had become the most commercially successful teenage music artist of all time.
Featuring her song “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” the film starred Spears as Lucy. The movie covered topics such as teen pregnancy, rape and childhood abandonment. The cult favorite also starred Zoë Saldana, Taryn Manning, Dan Akroyd, Beverly Johnson and Kim Cattrall. “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Bridgerton” creator Shonda Rhimes wrote the film, which was directed by Tamra Davis. The mostly female production team was a rare occurrence for the time.

Donyale Luna: Supermodel director Nailah Jefferson with Anne-Katrin Titze on Beyoncé’s 2018 Vogue cover, shot by Tyler Mitchell: “It was the first Vogue cover that had ever been shot by a Black photographer.”
“My name is Luna, I come from the moon” is how Donyale Luna used to introduce herself. It looks as though the memory of the supermodel’s brief, brimful life had gone back up to the heavens with her for decades. Nailah Jefferson’s insightful and revealing documentary ameliorates this and celebrates an extraordinary woman’s journey. William Klein’s 1966 fashion film Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo?, Federico Fellini’s Satyricon, a Vogue cover and one for Harper’s Bazaar, collaborations with Richard Avedon and David Bailey (interviewed here), images that show her with Salvador Dali and Groucho Marx, relationships with The Rolling Stone’s Brian Jones and Klaus Kinski, Andy Warhol bondings, and and and...

Nevada’s new state law removes the statutes of limitations for sexual assault cases and has allowed multiple women to come forward and sue Bill Cosby, 85, for allegedly raping and drugging them.
Nine women in Nevada filed a lawsuit against The Cosby Show star for alleged sexual assault that happened between 1979 and 1992 in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe homes, dressing rooms and hotels.
“For years I have fought for survivors of sexual assault and today is the first time I will be able to fight for myself,” Lise Lotte-Lublin said, who is one of the women suing Cosby. “With the new law change, I now have the ability to take my assailant Bill Cosby to court. My journey has just begun, but I am grateful for this opportunity to find justice.”

Sheryl Lee Ralph, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Others Honored at Essence Black Women in Hollywood Event
The 16th annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood event welcomed a constellation of stars — working both in front of and behind the camera — to the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon. The luncheon honored Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Dominique Thorne (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Tara Duncan (president of Freeform and Onyx Collective), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary).
Hosted by actor Boris Kodjoe, the event italicized the contributions Black women have made in film and television — particularly this year, but also across eras and generations. Essence magazine’s existence as a platform for Black representation since 1970 found kinship with Hollywood, an industry of images. At the event, many attendees acknowledged how the forward-thinking vision of Essence‘s founders is akin to the work Black creatives in entertainment are doing presently.

Progress in the face of systemic injustice does not occur naturally, it is urged along by sheer force of will — often by one radical visionary. In the case of the fashion industry’s racism, that person is Bethann Hardison. A trailblazing model in the 1970s, she became one of the most important agents of the ’90s, discovering the first male supermodel Tyson Beckford and mentoring Naomi Campbell and Iman. When fickle trends threatened to erase all of her hard work in the aughts, she boldly called out the industry’s blatantly racist casting practices, causing a seismic shift once and for all.
Hardison’s remarkable and fabulous life serves as an inspiring lesson in affecting radical change from within the system,...

Wazzup, Wazzup, Wazzup?!!
Cue that '90s nostalgia because BET+ is hitting us right in the heart with a long-awaited Martin: The Reunion, a special for the hit classic series.
It's been 30 years in the making!
Sadly we're down one key cast member after the tragic death of Tommy Ford. However, for the first time in three decades, the cast will come together to reminisce, relive some of their favorite moments, and commemorate one of the most pivotal and influential series in modern Black TV culture.
Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Tichina Arnold, and Carl Anthony Payne II will settle in on the iconic living room set of the series and relive some of their glory days with what was and remains a Black cultural juggernaut series.
Comedian Affion Crockett will host the 90-minute special, and it'll have some surprise guest appearances, special musical performances, and loads of behind-the-scenes commentary.

Taryn Manning is ready to head back to the Crossroads. This past February, the coming-of-age film starring Britney Spears, Zoe Saldaña, Beverly Johnson, Kim Cattrall and Dan Aykroyd, turned 20. Shortly after the drama—written by Shonda Rhimes—premiered in 2002, it became an instant cult classic, with fans hoping a sequel would eventually take place (especially when Britney suggested the idea in 2014). And as Taryn exclusively told E! News, that's a wish she is more than happy to grant. "I would hope that [the cast would] want to do it," she told E! News at the Hollywood Beauty Awards on March 19 about a possible Crossroads sequel. "And...

Twenty years ago, “Crossroads” hit theaters. The first feature film to star Britney Spears, the teenage road trip movie was panned by critics, but loved by audiences. Exceeding box office expectations, making more than $61 million on a $12 million budget, “Crossroads” went on to become somewhat of a cult favorite, particularly among Spears’ worldwide fans.
“Crossroads,” which also starred Zoe Saldana, Taryn Manning, Dan Akroyd, Beverly Johnson and Kim Cattrall, was written by Shonda Rhimes, who would go on to create “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” becoming one of the most powerful creators in television history. Rare for its time, the low-budget film was also directed by a woman, Tamra Davis, resulting in a mostly-female production that supported its young, central superstar.

Another woman has come forward with allegations against Chris Noth, becoming the fifth person this month to accuse the “Sex and the City” and “Law & Order” star of sexual assault.
In a press conference with her attorney Gloria Allred, singer-songwriter Lisa Gentile alleged she was “sexually victimized” and “sexually abused” by Noth in 2002. She claimed Noth forcibly pulled her, kissed her and touched her breasts.
“I was trying to get him to stop,” Gentile said.
The day after the alleged incident, Gentile claims Noth called her and said if she “ever told a soul about what happened the night before, that he would ruin my career, I would never sing again and he would blacklist me in the business.”
Noth’s representatives didn’t immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment. Noth has previously denied all other allegations, calling them “categorically false.”

Exclusive: Models and the fashion industry are known for being glamorous, beautiful and alluring — with a definite ugly side. Actress and iconic cover girl model Shari Belafonte is partnering with Love Productions USA and Bolo Media to give audiences a look behind the curtain of the industry’s longtime systemic racism.
The docuseries will give a behind-the-scenes look at the industry with other famous Black supermodels, including Beverly Johnson. Black Cat Walking will take a deep dive into the real world of modeling, marketing and merchandising.
Black Cat Walking comes at a pivotal time in the country when there is a reckoning in regard to the unjust treatment of people of color — specifically the Black community. Belfonte first came up with the idea for the docuseries in 2019 while considering projects for her Sowelu Entertainment production banner. Kareem “Biggs” Burke and Wally Eltawashy encouraged her to run with the idea and flesh out episodes. From there, Belafonte and Bolo Media partnered with Joe Labracio and Al Edgington of Love Productions USA for the series.
Belafonte finished the first script for the series while the social landscape was drastically changing with the Black Lives Matter movement in May 2020. With the current call to action for change, Black Cat Walking is a narrative that deserves to be in the spotlight. WME is currently shopping the docuseries with early interest from networks and streamers looking to support Bipoc programs.
Belafonte serves as executive producers alongside Burke and Eltawashy of Bolo Media; and Labracio and Edgington of Love Productions USA.
Love Productions USA is a division of the UK-based Love Productions, which produces The Great British Sewing Bee, The Great Pottery Throw Down and The Great British Bake-Off, which was adapted into The Great American Baking Show. Bolo Media is a television and film company with a multimedia component for digital platforms that focuses on putting the culture front and center.
Belafonte is an award-winning actor, producer, director, singer and writer. As a model, she’s been on the cover of Vogue six times. She recurred on Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and appears Tyler Perry’s BET series Sistas.
The docuseries will give a behind-the-scenes look at the industry with other famous Black supermodels, including Beverly Johnson. Black Cat Walking will take a deep dive into the real world of modeling, marketing and merchandising.

Beverly Johnson, Vogue's First Black Cover Model, Calls on Anna Wintour to Make "Structural Changes"
Beverly Johnson is demanding change from the fashion industry in a new article published by the Washington Post. The model made history in 1974, when she became the first Black woman to be featured on a Vogue cover. She writes in the Washington Post that she believed her debut on the cover would "usher in a current of change in the fashion industry." However, she says that racial inequality and discrimination continues to be "ugly part of the beauty business", even as Black women like herself demanded diversity and inclusion. She reveals that on numerous occasions she was reprimanded when she asked for Black photographers, makeup artists and hairstylists. Johnson, now...

During a break after the first hour of the Democratic debate in Los Angeles, CNN’s Dana Bash noted that the field of seven candidates had yet to engage in the kind of verbal fireworks that had pervaded previous events.
The Democratic electorate, she said, wants “to make a decision. They don’t want to see them fight.”
She spoke too soon. By the time the candidates returned to the stage, they were in a different mood, ready to go after not just President Donald Trump, but one another. The chief intra-party target this time around was 37-year-old South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, this presidential cycle’s wunderkind who now has a real shot at winning the Iowa caucuses. Among his rivals, there has been a simmering resentment, whether it be that he is insufficiently progressive or that he just hasn’t paid his dues. Elizabeth Warren hit Buttigieg for...

In the second instalment of my conversation with Frédéric Tcheng we discuss Halston's relationship to Charles James and costume designer John David Ridge, Truman Capote's Black and White Ball, Studio 54, the Amazon director's cut, envisioning a miniseries "Mad Men with the fashion world and Halston at the centre", and an upcoming project.
Halston is a story of inclusion and exclusion. His models, the Halstonettes, included Pat Cleveland, Anjelica Huston, Heidi Goldberg, Karen Bjornson, Beverly Johnson, Nancy North, Chris Royer, Alva Chinn, Connie Cook, and Pat Ast. Halston made most of the masks for Truman Capote's legendary 1966 Black and White Ball - but wasn't officially invited. The fragrance, and the designs of the 1976 U.S. Olympic uniforms helped this important fashion designer spread his wings.

After premiering current Emmy nominees “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Sinner” in 2017, this year’s Tribeca TV Festival is looking to make an impact at the end of summer 2018. Featured in its second edition are new season premieres of Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” the CBS drama “Madam Secretary,” Crackle’s “StartUp,” HBO’s “Tracey Ullman’s Show” — including a conversation between the star and Meryl Streep — as well as the 20th season of “Law & Order: Svu.”

To many he was Dr. Cliff Huxtable, America’s dad and neighbor. There was nothing he could do wrong -- or at least seemingly so -- and so it came as a surprise to many (and probably to him), when in 2014, a comedian cracked, “Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby.” Three years later, he’s standing trial for sexual assault.
Broad City star Hannibal Buress’ 2014 comedy set in the veteran entertainer’s hometown of Philadelphia reignited a firestorm of sexual assault allegations that had largely been suppressed thanks to Cosby’s overwhelming star power. During an Entertainment Tonight interview, former supermodel Janice Dickinson accused Cosby of raping her in a Lake Tahoe hotel room in 1982. Cosby’s then-lawyer Marty Singer, high-powered attorney to stars like Kim Kardashian, dismissed her claims as a “lie,” and she responded with a defamation lawsuit.

Bill Cosby has a date for a deposition. Again. Attorneys for the scandal-battered comedian lost a bid to delay a second deposition in the civil case brought against him by accuser Judy Huth, Huth’s attorney Gloria Allred said Friday. The second deposition remains on the schedule for April 7. According to Allred, attorneys for Cosby are also attempting to stay the entire case, which would affect the scheduled deposition if successful. A hearing on that motion will take place March 30. Bill Cosby is setting aside his lawsuit against Beverly Johnson, at least for the time being. The scandal-plagued comedian’s team has filed legal papers to dismiss his defamation suit against the model. However, they are asking the court to dismiss the case without prejudice, meaning that they can pick up the case again at a later date. Lawyers for Cosby contend that the comedian is too busy for the time being with other legal issues — specifically, the criminal case against him in Pennsylvania.
