I love Stanley Kubrick‘s classic Stephen King adaptation The Shining (watch it Here) and would probably have a blast watching the movie at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon – which is the place that stood in for the Overlook Hotel in the exterior shots of the location. (The interior scenes were filmed on sets in England.) Chances are, I’m not going to be able to do that any time soon, but some fans are going to have that opportunity later this year! On Set Cinema has announced that they will be showing The Shining at the Timberline Lodge on Sunday, October 6th! The event details can be found at This Link and tickets can be purchased Here.

There are a million reasons why Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" has become such a beloved film, but the top of the list has got to be Jack Nicholson's performance as Jack Torrance. Unlike his book counterpart, Nicholson's Jack gives off unsettling vibes from the moment he shows up on screen, and he only gets worse from there. The horrors of the film have less to do with the ghosts inside the hotel; they're more about how terrifying it is to be trapped in a place with a guy who's clearly losing his mind.
To pull it off, Kubrick's team worked with Nicholson to try to figure out the right tone of voice for him to display his mental state to the audience. It was tough to figure out in part because the Jack character doesn't actually talk that much throughout the movie. "The Shining" has lots of long, atmospheric scenes with surprisingly little dialogue,...

We’re less than a week away from the final episode of ABC’s long-running and influential sitcom black-ish, and while we’ll have to wait to see what the future holds for the Johnson family—led by Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross)—there’s time to look back at the past eight seasons. Since they’ve literally grown up on the show, stars Marsai Martin (who plays Diane Johnson) and Miles Brown shared their favorite moments recently for TV Guide Magazine’s cover story. From those early days on set to iconic moments like the Juneteenth episode and Prince tribute, Jack and Diane were always in the mix to bring laughs but also provide the younger perspective on the big issues the show explored weekly. As the series was wrapping up, did you go back and watch those early episodes? What do you think when you see yourself?...

Directed by Tina Gordon and co-starring Regina Hall and Issa Rae, “Little” went on to gross $49 million at the box office. The end is in sight for ABC’s black-ish. The network has renewed the praised comedy series for an eighth and final season.
Creator executive producer Kenya Barris announced the news Friday morning on social media (see below). He said, “This show has changed my life in so many ways and I am so proud of the conversations we’ve started along the way.”
It has been rumored for awhile that the show might be facing its final season, with modest ratings in the current Season 7.
This season, Black-ish has continued to tell stories that shine a light on current events through the lens of the Johnson family, addressing the global pandemic, systemic racism and the movement for social justice and equality.
In the season seven finale “Urban Legend,” airing Tuesday, May 18, Dre feels pigeonholed to the urban marketing team at Stevens & Lido and realizes he needs to make some big career changes.

ABC has given a six-episode back order to Black-ish. The pickup brings the order for the praised comedy to 21 episode, which constitutes a full season order, with a potential for more.
The back order comes two days after the seventh season premiere of, Black-ish, which also did an hourlong election special earlier this month.
For the first time since the launch of Black-ish, ABC left the Kenya Barris-created family comedy off the fall schedule when the network announced its fall 2020 lineup in June. The series received a 15-episode midseason order.
Several days later, ABC moved Black-ish back to fall. At the time, on the heels of the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd, the network said that after speaking to Barris, it decided that it was “important to tell these meaningful stories during this moment in time”.

Not only does turning 13 officially make her a teenager, but in the Beaumont family, the 13th birthday is when Beaumonts discover their “savvy,” their own supernatural power. While Mibs’ grandfather can move mountains, and her brothers cause hurricanes and create electricity, her power, the ability to read minds, isn’t exactly the best thing when you’re a teenage girl.

In his latest book about Hollywood, “Murder and the Movies,” prolific film author David Thomson examines the ways master filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick lure audiences into their twisted murders and sinister plotting. The book’s second chapter, “Red Rum,” focuses on Kubrick’s 1980 classic “The Shining.” Our excerpt (slightly edited for length) is below.
I’m starting with “The Shining” (1980), the Stanley Kubrick adaptation of Stephen King, because of its pioneering balance of horror and satire, and its lethal-dainty script by Diane Johnson. So the Torrance family goes off to the Overlook Hotel in the bracing but desolate heights of Colorado. Life seems perfect there — everything the idiot mastermind Jack Torrance ever wanted. He will be caretaker for the off-season winter — time to write the novel he’s always promised himself, time to defeat the blank pages. He can work alone in a vast room. His wife Wendy will go...

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining turns 40 years old this week. Despite being the filmmaker’s late-in-life stab at commercialism after the failure of Barry Lyndon, his single attempt at horror remains one of the most artful, and hauntingly confounding, chillers ever produced. It turned Stephen King’s traditional haunted hotel yarn into a metaphysical nightmare of… well, just about anything you want. As Rodney Ascher’s Room 237 documentary explored, there are Kubrick conspiracy theorists who will tell you The Shining is about everything from white guilt over the generational mass murder of American Indians (plausible) to a confession of Kubrick’s complicity in faking the moon landing (bonkers). Ryan Lambie took a more evidence-based approach in considering the immutability of evil in Kubrick’s Overlook Hotel, which gets to the essence of the movie’s macabre ending where Jack Nicholson’s chipper axe murderer, Jack Torrance, joins the party of the dead forevermore.

The Johnsons have a bright future ahead of them at ABC.
Black-ish has been renewed for a sixth season. The network confirmed on Thursday it was bringing the critically acclaimed and award-winning comedy series back for the 2019-20 TV season.
Additionally, the Black-ish universe will be growing, once again.
ABC has also placed a series order for Mixed-ish, a spinoff about Rainbow Johnson's experience of growing up in a mixed-race family in the '80s.
A backdoor pilot for the series, titled "Becoming Bow," was originally slated to air May 7, but the episode will now be held for next season, presumably to air as part of the first season of the spinoff.

The Johnsons will be back for another go-round. ABC has picked up a sixth season of its hit comedy series black-ish for the 2019-2020 season. In addition, the network has given an early season order to mixed-ish, a spinoff about Rainbow Johnson’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s.
The black-ish renewal is not a surprise for the praised single-camera comedy centered on an affluent African-American family struggling to raise their kids in the largely white culture of well-to-do suburbia. Also not surprising was the pickup for mixed-ish, which had emerged as ABC’s strongest comedy pilot.
ABC had intended to air a “Becoming Bow” episode of black-ish on May 7, which could have become a backdoor pilot for a potential prequel series. With the mixed-ish series order, that episode will now be held for next season, ABC says. Bless This Mess, “The Predators...

ABC has renewed “Black-ish” for a sixth season and has also put out a series order for a prequel to the show titled “Mixed-ish.”
The spinoff series, which has been in development since February, focuses on the experience of Tracee Ellis Ross’s character, Rainbow Johnson, growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s.
“Black-ish” centers on the Johnsons, an affluent black family in a predominantly white neighborhood. Parents Andre “Dre” (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow are trying to raise their kids, who are growing up in very different worlds than they did, to have the right values and appreciate their roots.

Universal Pictures has signed a first-look deal with 14-year-old “Black-ish” star Marsai Martin and her Genius Productions company.
The first Genius Productions film under the deal is the comedy “StepMonster,” in which Martin will star as a teenager adjusting to life with a new stepmother.
Martin began working as an actress at the age of five and received her first major recurring role as Diane Johnson on “Black-ish” in 2014, portraying the twin sister to Miles Brown’s Jack. She stars in and executive produces her first film, the comedy “Little,” along with Regina Hall and Issa Rae. “Little” opens on April 12.
Martin will develop scripted projects for Universal alongside Genius Productions co-founder Joshua Martin, VP Carol Martin, and head of creative Prince Baggett.
“Working with emerging talent is a cornerstone of Universal’s overall slate strategy and Marsai is a star on the rise,” Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer said.

What's The Shining really about? We delve into the underlying theme of Stanley Kubrick's horror classic...
Few horror films have been as closely studied and intimately dissected as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. The simple story of a family ripped apart by the effects of a remote, haunted hotel, Kubrick's film has only grown in mystique since its release in 1980. Clearly, there's far more going on below the surface, but what does Kubrick's imagery and symbolism - much of it unique to the film, and absent from Stephen King's source novel - actually mean?
Rodney Ascher's superb 2012 documentary Room 237 pulled together some of the more outlandish theories about The Shining. It's Kubrick's veiled confession that he helped Nasa fake the 1969 Moon landings, goes one line of thinking. No, it's an allusion to the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust, says a different theorist.

We recently shared some interesting information regarding Stanely Kubrick's The Shining in which we learned some of the original alternate endings that were explored by the director and his creative team.
The other versions of the ending included Wendy killing Jack, Jack killing Danny, and even one in which Dick Hallorann was one of the real villains of the story. One thing it was all leading up to, though, was the photograph on the wall in which we see Jack Nicholson's Jack Torrance hosting a the Fourth of July Ball.
Screenwriter Diane Johnson said that the "photograph was always in the ending." So what is the explanation of the photo and why Jack is in it? She explains:
"There is an explanation for the photo, though it’s a bit strange and paradoxical because it’s both real and unreal — the idea that Jack was always at the hotel in some earlier incarnation.

Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece The Shining had almost as many multiple endings as the Overlook Hotel had ghosts.
Spoilers for The Shining lie ahead.
Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s haunted hotel story The Shining is a classic horror movie in spite of the director’s intent. The author is on record as saying he was more than merely disappointed in the liberties the filmmaker made. One of those variants was perpetuated to avoid a cinematic cliché, the ending. Jan Harlan, who executive produced the film, and novelist Diane Johnson, who wrote the screenplay with Kubrick, gave up the ghost about some of the different original endings that Kubrick considered for The Shining.

And so we arrive at the second in our series of lookbacks at the film adaptations of Stephen King's work. And it's a bit of a special one.
The Film: Well, you likely know. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is a writer in need of a job and so he takes the opportunity to spend the winter at Colorado’s Overlook Hotel, up in the mountains. With him is his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and his son Danny (Danny Lloyd). Danny has an imaginary friend named Tony who warns him that heading to the Overlook is a really bad idea. When there, Danny talks with the cook, Dick Halloran (Scatman Crothers) and the pair reveal that they can communicate telepathically, something which Dick calls ‘shining’. Perhaps it’s their ability to let go of self-consciousness or the absence of cynicism in their worldview, but young actors, from Dakota Fanning to Abigail Breslin, have been capable of exuding experience beyond their years. Marsai Martin, “Black-ish”Nailing the skill of comedic timing before hitting your teens is a feat that Martin has mastered as Diane Johnson on the ABC comedy “Black-ish.” She grounds the character, who easily could’ve teetered into the overblown, with a brassy and whip-smart performance. 10. Alien
Directed by Ridley Scott
Written by Dan O’Bannon
UK / USA, 1979
Genre: Sci-Fi Horror
Boasting one of the greatest taglines of all time – “In space, no one can hear you scream” – Alien blends science fiction, horror, and bleak poetry into what could have easily turned into a simple B-monster movie. In fact, the movie was originally pitched to producers as “Jaws in space,” but thankfully Ridley Scott, who was stepping behind the camera for only the second time, took the film far more seriously. Like Steven Spielberg’s great thriller, most of the running time relies on the viewer’s imagination since Scott carefully restricts how little we see of the creature. Alien can certainly test a viewer’s patience. This is an extremely slow burn (something unusual for the genre) and despite the budget, stellar effects, and ambitious set design, Alien in a sense is a minimalist film...

Lonely Hearts: Sautet’s Elegant Final Film on Passionate Restraint
Winning Best Director as well as Best Actor for Michel Serrault at the 1995 Cesars, Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud would stand as the final film of director Claude Sautet. The achingly rendered central relationship makes for a curious case study in the deep emotional undercurrents exchanged between two people unable to properly communicate their actual feelings, and as is typical of many Sautet films, it’s a master class of finely attenuated performances. It was the second collaboration of Sautet and the beautiful Emmanuelle Beart (had he lived, she would have taken the muse role occupied by Romy Schneider in his earlier filmography), following 1991’s A Heart in Winter, a title many champion as the director’s masterpiece, and the one that tends to overshadow their second outing.

In case you weren't aware, Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" turned 35 years old on Saturday, and over the weekend Elstree Studios (where a majority of the film was shot) held an anniversary celebration with several members of the cast and crew, including Steadicam operator (and inventor) Garrett Brown, screenwriter Diane Johnson, executive producer Jan Harlan, Kubrick's daughter Katharina (who worked as a "location researcher" on the film) and, yes, the doomed Grady twins (Lisa and Louise Burns), whose stoic apparitions uttered the now-famous line: "Come and play with us Danny...forever...and ever...and ever." Speaking of the Grady twins, Lisa recalled their time working on the horror classic with an anecdote about Garrett Brown: “It’s so lovely to be with the whole gang again...Mummy wouldn’t let us have a cup of coffee and a donut each, just half a cup and half a donut. Thirty-five years since its release, The Shining received a special anniversary screening yesterday, with an introduction from cinema’s most uncanny kid, Danny Lloyd (all grown up) and a Q&A moderated by the film’s most passionate – and unlikely – fan, Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich. Unkrich presided over a panel that included co-writer Diane Johnson and executive producer Jan Harlan, while the audience contained more than 25 crew from Stanley Kubrick’s iconic horror. Organised by The Elstree Project, which interviews cast and crew who have worked on films at the studios at Elstree and Borehamwood, it was a touching day of reminiscences and insights.Unkrich joined several of the crew on a tour of Elstree before the screening at the Odyssey Cinema in St. Albans – providing more fuel for a book he is working on about the picture. “I feel so privileged because I’ve been obsessed with...

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time around for one simple reason: that is, the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. Enjoy!

Un chien andalou

Even auteurs make mistakes—or change their minds at least. It seems Stanley Kubrick originally had a different ending tacked onto his Jack Nicholson-starrer (and arguably most famous film) "The Shining," and decided to axe it at the eleventh hour.
"Kubrick had filmed a final scene that was cut, where Wendy and Danny are recovering from the shock in a hospital and where Ullman visits them," Diane Johnson, co-writer of the famous horror flick, tells Vulture.
"Kubrick felt that we should see them in the hospital so we would know that they were all right." But why would he think that? The answer may surprise you: "He had a soft spot for Wendy and Danny and thought that, at the end of a horror film, the audience should be reassured that everything was back to normal." Yes. You read that correctly. Kubrick had a "soft spot."

You read that correctly. Kubrick had a "soft spot."
Only after the...

After Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" was released in limited theaters, the director decided to cut two minutes from the ending. He ordered all reels to be returned to Warner Bros to make sure that the footage would be destroyed. Even though we'll likely never see the original ending, "Toy Story 3" director Lee Unkrich, who is a huge fan of "The Shining," tracked down the script for the film and posted the final, four-page scene in its entirety. Diane Johnson, who helped write the screenplay for "The Shining," explained what's in the cut footage and why it was cut. "Kubrick had filmed a final scene that was cut, where Wendy and Danny are recovering from the shock in a hospital and where Ullman visits them," she explained. "Kubrick felt that we should see them in the hospital so we would know that they were all right. He had a...

"Kubrick had filmed a final scene that was cut, where Wendy and Danny are recovering from the shock in a hospital and where Ullman visits them," said The Shining co-screenwriter Diane Johnson. "Kubrick felt that we should see them in the hospital so we would know that they were all right. He had a soft spot for Wendy and Danny and thought that, at the end of a horror film, the audience should be reassured that everything was back to normal." Then the auteur totally reneged on that soft spot and dispatched personal assistants out to dozens of L.A. and New York cinemas to remove the scene from all finished prints of The Shining. (Although, since this is that kind of story, rumor has it one complete print remains. Spoooooky!) The deleted ending would have appeared between the shot of frozen Jack and the final spin through The Overlook.

Every now and again someone digs up a long lost relic pertaining to Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece The Shining, and each time it happens, what we see leaves us grinning from ear to ear. Kind of like the way Nicholson did in his "Heeeere's Johnny!" moment.
Website The Overlook Hotel has just released some script pages and even some continuity Polaroids from the excised alternate ending of the flick. According to the site, Kubrick’s co-screenwriter on The Shining, Diane Johnson, had this to say about the deleted epilogue:

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is one of my favorite horror films of all time, and most hardcore fans of the movie know that Kubrick had another ending for the film that he cut out at the last minute after the movie had opened up in limited theaters. There was two minutes of footage showing that Danny and Wendy were going to be alright were cut from the film.
The filmmaker sent assistants out to theaters and ordered the projectionists to send all the reels back to Warner Bros. studio to make sure none of the cuts of the original version would remain in existence, they were all destroyed. As far as we know the footage is lost, but you never know, one may have survived. There is a photo and now thanks to Pixar director and Shining fan Lee Unkrich, we have that part of the script for you to read!

Directed by Stanley Kubrick
USA 1980 imdb
Quebec’s only documentary film festival, Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal – Ridm, starts Wednesday, November 7th. One of the most highly anticipated docs is Room 237, a film about the obsessive deep analysis of Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film, The Shining. Theories explored in the documentary range from the plausible (The Overlook Hotel was built on an Indian burial ground and the ghosts are manifestations of the dead Indians need for revenge on the White culture that killed them) to the implausible (the film is a Holocaust metaphor) to – well, that’s a stretch (the film is a meditation on the myth of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth) to – wait What? (the film is Kubrick’s coded confession that he faked the Apollo Moon landing...
