As a movie reviewer there’s nothing more difficult than reviewing an average movie. With terrible movies you can spew forth all the bile and hatred you want, with good (or great) movies you can rave over each an every aspect that got you excited. But with an average movie there’s very often little to say beyond “it’s Ok” – and that’s what Tracers is, just Ok.
Down on his luck Cam (Taylor Lautner) is barely scraping by. Drowning in debt and living out of a garage, he is desperately looking for an out. Cam’s prayers are seemingly answered when he meets the beautiful and mysterious Nikki (Marie Avgeropoulos). She...

I'm one of those "glass half-full "critics when it comes to Taylor Lautner. Film after film I hope he'll pull a Sally Field, who went from The Flying Nun and Gidget to Sybil and Norma Rae. Would Abduction or Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 reveal the young man's inner Laurence Olivier? No, sadly. The lumbering hunk remains just a lumbering hunk in those two. Prize-winning pecs and abs plus a cute smile were what the glamor boy's fans had to settle for.
"Well, maybe Tracers will be his Wuthering Heights," I was murmuring as I scooted onto the subway last night, heading for a midtown screening room. I should have known better. I should have checked out the director's CV before hoping for the best.
The Barcelona-born Daniel Benmayor had previously helmed a Schweppes commercial with Hugh Laurie and two deodorant ads, which would make you think he could avoid creating malodorous art.

Remember that time when Hollywood thought Twilight star Taylor Lautner was going to be the next big movie star? That didn’t quite work out for anyone, did it? But he’s back in an upcoming movie called Tracers, which doesn’t look very promising. It’s described as a parkour action thriller, and this is the synopsis:
“Tracers follows a New York City bicycle messenger, Cam (Lautner) who is the hottest thing on two wheels, but is in debt to an organized crime gang. When he crashes his bike into a sexy stranger, Nikki (Avgeropoulos), Cam is immediately seduced by her and the thrill of the high-stakes world of parkour.”
Even though I enjoy parkour, Lautner just kills the whole thing for me, and it's hard to take seriously. The film was directed by Daniel Benmayor (The Manhunt) and had an army of screenwriters that included Leslie Bohem, Matt Johnson,...

[1] Joel Schumacher has confirmed in an interview that Halle Berry is in talks to take the lead in the tentatively titled The Hive, about "a female emergency line operator who, in trying to help a young girl, comes up against a killer from her own past." While nothing is official at this point, the director said, he and Berry are both interested in working together and the producers of The Hive seem to be on board with hiring her. The thriller is expected to begin shooting in February, though Schumacher has said that he may shoot another, smaller film before that. Berry will next appear in Garry Marshall's limp-looking ensemble romcom New Year's Eve, and is currently shooting Cloud Atlas with directors Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski, and Lana Wachowski. [Coming Soon [2]] After the jump, surfing biopic Mavericks gets a new title and two new stars, and 50 Cent lines up yet another acting gig.

Gerard Butler isn't likely to reprise his role as King Leonidas for "Xerxes," director Zack Snyder's planned sequel to "300" — not unless he's appearing in a flashback, or as a zombie Spartan for that matter — but that doesn't mean that the Scottish actor is done swimming in the comic book pool.
According to Deadline, Butler is in talks with Relativity Media to star in "Afterburn," the production company's adaptation of the Red 5 Comics series created by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood.
In addition to Butler's possible involvement, Relativity is reportedly looking to hire "Training Day" filmmaker Antoine Fuqua to fill out the director's chair.
"Afterburn" takes place in a world where a massive solar flare has decimated the Eastern Hemisphere, turning Europe, Africa and Asia into utter wastelands scarcely populated by irradiated mutants. But where there's a wasteland, there's an ancient relic to discover.

I forgot to mention Antoine Fuqua on my black cinema 2011 list, posted earlier today.
He doesn’t have anything definite for 2011, although his IMDb resume shows several projects in the works.
And to add to that list is the just announced Afterburn, an adaptation of the Red 5 comic title – a sci-fi adventure set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic earth destroyed by a massive solar flare, leaving what life remains mostly mutated from radiation, as treasure hunters battle for anything of value.
The script was written by Matt Johnson (Into the Blue), with Christian Gudegast (A Man Apart scribe) brought in to do a rewrite.
The project has been in development for about 2 years or more; though Fuqua was only just introduced to it, and is in talks to direct, with Gerard Butler interested in starring.

Matt Johnson ("Into the Blue") will write New Line Cinema's untitled drama about Parkour -- the free-jumping extreme sport where people run and jump from rooftops. The project has been in development since 2007 when New Line bought a pitch preemptively from Kevin Lund and T.J. Scott. Story tells of a pair of jumpers who make use of their skills in heists. At that point, Channing Tatum was attached to star, but is no longer involved. Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill produce. Richie Smyth, a music video director as well as extreme sports practioner himself, will direct. Johnson also wrote 2004's "Torque" with Martin Henderson, Ice Cube, Money Mazur, Adam Scott and Matt Schulze. Smyth's directing credits, even in the music video biz, are limited with "U2: Achung Baby" and "U2: The Best of 1990-2000." The film marks his feature-length directorial debut.

The Southern-fried buddy action script centers on a disgraced sheriff's deputy and a repentant getaway driver who must elude a federal manhunt when they join forces to bring an escaped bank robber to justice. The action unfolds along the Mississippi River in the vein of a Deep South-set "48 Hrs."
Matt Reilly will oversee the project for Warners.

His credits include 2004's Warners thriller "Torque" and the 2005 Jessica Alba flick "Into the Blue." He most recently penned the road-race adventure "Baja 1000" for Spyglass.

Word is that now the film has found it's pen pusher - Into the Blue scribe Matt Johnson. Not entirely sure how I think about that but considering Into the Blue was also a treasure hunters type adventure story I suppose it makes sense. It would just be a shame if they leaned too much towards the adventure side of the film and made it into another Lost City Raiders which was a great concept that failed to deliver anything really new to the genre.

Red 5 Comics’ Afterburn is making its way to the big screen, and this morning THR has learned that Matt Johnson (Torque, Into the Blue) has been tapped to pen the screenplay.
For those not familiar, Afterburn is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which the entire Eastern Hemisphere has been destroyed by a solar flare, leaving what life remains mutated and twisted. A group of treasure hunters enter this wasteland to find priceless treasures and artifacts and have to deal with mutants, rival hunters, and pirates.
Sounds like it could be a helluva lot of fun if done properly, no? Relativity Media is producing alongside Neal Mortiz’s Original Films and Toby Maquire’s Maguire Entertainment. If none of that matters to you, just focus on the fact that this’ll be filled with irradiated monstrosities, something we’ve not seen on the big screen for a while!

Into the Blue and Torque screenwriter Matt Johnson has been hired to adapt a big screen version of the Red 5 comic book Afterburn for producers Tobey Maguire and Neil Moritz (I Am Legend, xXx). No director has been attached.
The sci-fi comic book follows a group of treasure-hunters for hire in the future who “recover” exotic valuables from an Earth half-destroyed by a devastating solar flare, which has left a wily world roamed by mutants, rival pirates and assorted derelicts.. Described as “Indiana Jones meets Mad Max, but instead of ancient artifacts in cob-webbed temples in traditional pulp adventure” the characters raid more contemporary treasures from felled museums. For instance, in the first issue the team must claim the Mona Lisa from a Louve in shambles. Sounds like an interesting concept, but Johnson’s credits thus are far from confidence inducing.
