It’s great when filmmaking can be a family affair, which is why we’re excited to kick off the 2024 edition of our community spotlight series with writer Hank Jones. Because in addition to working as a supervising producer on the ABC procedural Will Trent and being part of Film Independent’s Project Involve and Episodic Lab, Jones is also the spouse of last July 2023 Member Lens subject Thembi Banks. But while Banks’ trip through Fi Artist Development may have laid the groundwork for Jones to follow, his narrative perspective–and desire to tell stories rooted in universal truth–are uniquely his own.

The subject of time travel and quantum mechanics is an interesting topic for sci-fi filmmakers to munch on, and Larry Wade Carrell’s 2023 film, The Quantum Devil, is no exception. It’s a sly wink at the fact that not every quest for knowledge yields Nobel-worthy results. Sometimes, it lands you in a parallel universe where the extraordinary is the new ordinary, and danger lurks around every corner. Meet our fearless foursome: Matthews, Luke, Ivanna, and Sophie, who’re on a wild goose chase to solve a riddle that’s more mind-boggling than a Picasso painting. As they go down the rabbit hole, they come across a dimension where the rules of life and death don’t matter, old secrets pop up, and who knows what else!
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens in the Film?
The Quantum Devil begins with Luke Matthews (Tyler Tackett) stepping inside a taxi...

Led Zeppelin drum covers aren’t exactly a rare commodity. A quick YouTube search turns up a sea of results, from child prodigy Yoyoka Soma nailing “Good Times, Bad Times” to various tribute-band members replicating Bonham’s famous Song Remains the Same look, complete with headband, ‘stache, and translucent-orange Ludwig Vistalite kit. But amid the hundreds of takes on “Ramble On,” “Rock and Roll,” and “Black Dog,” you’ll find something singular: a man covering not just songs, but entire concerts: as in every monster fill in “Whole Lotta Love,...

Bert I. Gordon’s career groove of shrinking and bloating various animals and people bottoms out in this trashy drive-in groaner: it’s colorful but nigh-unwatchable. The exploitation target is sci-fi and the teen musical, with incompatible helpings of pre-teen ‘cutes’ and girlie show jiggle for the raincoat crowd. The show apparently did well, but I heard mostly about resentful walkouts. Gordon’s early films have far more charm; this one mostly shows contempt for his audience. For fans that think there’s Camp value here, the Blu-ray transfer is sensationally good, as is the reproduction of Jack Nitzsche’s rock music score. The only thing to call this movie is Poor, but how can that be when I find so much to say about it?

Back in October, an inarguably simpler time, I got the chance to interview writer Matt Miner and editor Brendan Wright on the project they were promoting on Kickstarter, Gwar: Orgasmageddon. Since then, not only did that Kickstarter get fully funded, but it got picked up for distribution by Dynamite Entertainment. The first issue is scheduled for release next month. I got my hands on a review copy, and since I asked you all to support the Kickstarter for this comic I might as well tell you what I think.
Before I jump in there are a lot of credits to this comic, so let me get through that first. The main 18-page story is written by Gwar’s own Matt Maguire and Matt Miner, line art by Jonathan Brandon Sawyer with Matt Maguire, colors by Marissa Louise and Doug Garbark, and letters and designs by Taylor Esposito. Eddie Daniels/Roger Kellaway: Live at the Library of Congress (Ipo)
The surprising thing about this album is how wild it is. I didn't expect this clarinet/piano duo playing lots of very old standards to shoot off on weird tangents filled with such startling dissonances; I've heard Daniels and Kellaway in separate contexts before this, and they were less adventurous then. They play the themes straightforwardly, but sometimes open those tracks with left-field intros that would make even Erroll Garner smile a bit enviously. And once they get to their solos (mostly in the sense of "featured," in Daniels's case, though Kellaway really is solo and sometimes he drops out to let Daniels fly unaccompanied), you never know whether you're going to hear a sedately prim excursion on bebop-level harmonies or a spurt of exuberance that takes in a wider range of styles. Their reading of Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-a-ning,...
