I’ve watched a lot of TV this year. I wake up in the morning, brew a pot of coffee, and sit down to watch television until my eyes go square in their sockets. It’s a quotidian world of ticking time bombs, raunchy rutting, and liberally littered laughs.
The following 10 shows represent my favourites from the past 12 months. Some were watched for work and some were watched for pleasure, but all were immensely enjoyable. In a year dominated by two blockbuster fantasy shows – HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon and Amazon’s Tolkien epic The Rings of Power – the work I enjoyed most erred on the side of the irreverent. Funny, cynical, moving, thrilling; there’s a little of everything on this list.
But before we get into it, I think it’s important to recognise my biases: competently assembled though many of these shows are,...

Good afternoon Insiders, happy Harry and Meghan-week. Sigh. It’s been a long one but it’s Max Goldbart here cutting through the noise and bringing you the royalest news and analysis of the past seven days.
‘Hazza & Meg’
Trailing trouble: The majority of the British public and Twitterati appeared to find the first three episodes of shock Netflix Harry & Meghan doc just a bit of a damp squib when the loved-up couple dropped their highly-anticipated show yesterday morning. Of more interest was the goings-on around the doc. The week started with a duo of trailers and boy were they spicy, black-and-white images overlaid with La La Land’s favourite Prince declaring “I had to do everything I could to protect my family” and other comments of that urgent ilk. It wasn’t long before that and a subsequent trailer were being picked apart by the British media, however. Veteran...

If there are two sides to every story, and one of those sides is the Royal Family backed by a spectacle-hungry media and tabloid circus while the other is the very couple they’ve both placed under an unsparing microscope – which holds the truth? In the new documentary series Harry & Meghan, the first three episodes of which are now streaming on Netflix, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle make a case for their perspective: “When the stakes are this high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?...

Netflix’s hotly-anticipated Harry & Meghan doc series has already been causing controversy as UK media outlets pick apart its two trailers and find footage and photos have been used in misleading ways.
Veteran UK royal correspondent Jennie Bond slammed the “extremely sloppy production values” of Harry and Meghan’s Archewell’s documentary this morning and ITV stalwart Lorraine Kelly described the use of certain images and footage as “bizarre.” Archewell is producing with Story Syndicate and Diamond Docs and Liz Garbus is director.
A number of moments in the two trailers have been under the microscope.
Yesterday, an overhead camera shot supposed to illustrate press intrusion was called a “complete travesty” by another veteran royal commentator, Robert Jobson, who pointed out that the shot was taken from an accredited pool at Archbishop Tutu’s residence in Cape Town with only three journalists allowed in. Piers Morgan was one of many hundreds to retweet.

Despite having only competed in her original season under a year ago, Vanity Milan returned with a vengeance in the opening episode of Drag Race Canada vs The World! During the musical challenge, she delivered a powerful message about the injustices Poc queens experience including calling out the BBC media team who recently came under fire for putting the wrong name of a black queen during one of the exit interviews of Drag Race UK season four! During the runway section of the episode, she decided to showcase an incredibly elegant, golden outfit made from duvets which looked absolutely incredible on her! After finding herself in the top two alongside Rita Baga, Vanity delivered a lip-sync performance that utilised every one of her mind-blowing dance skills that claimed her place as the overall winner of the episode. Rita decided to channel a much more comedic performance also mimicking the incredible stunts of her opponent.

On paper, last week’s episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK vs The World seemed like it should be made perfectly for me! Drag performers taking on a lip-sync performance inspired by an iconic musical theatre star which included parodies of Liza Minnelli in Cabaret and Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (which is one of my all-time favourite films) should be something that I would want to be a part of and at the bare minimum really enjoy but I have to say I thought that, compared to previous Ru-sical challenges, this one fell flat! When you think that the halftime show challenge from All-Stars 6 (which also had the queens impersonating iconic performers) had the highest production value, fantastic costumes and back-up dancers whereas the UK versus the world version just about had props, it does mean the overall package does pale in comparison! It...

British reality star Katie Price has been handed a 16-week suspended prison sentence for drunk driving while she was disqualified and without auto insurance.
The 43-year-old media personality, who has become a fixture in recent years on channels like Discovery-owned Quest Red, will need to meet certain conditions as part of the sentence — which has been suspended for 12 months — including 100 hours of community service along with a driving ban. The sentence was handed down on Wednesday at Crawley Magistrates’ Court.
Price, who has had previous driving convictions, crashed her car near her Sussex home in the early hours back in September, and needed to be pulled out of the vehicle by a witness. No one else was injured in the crash, but Price is believed to have confessed to police on the scene that she had taken drugs, before being arrested and taken to hospital.

Former glamour model and singer Katie Price has shared that she is undergoing fat dissolving treatment to make her derriere smaller.
Price shared the news in a YouTube video that she had undergone two colonic irrigations before beginning her fat-dissolving treatment, reports femalefirt.co.uk.
"We've been put under the test today. Literally, top-to-toe is good," she said, adding that she could "actually feel a difference".
"A few more treatments and that'll be good, won't it?" added the mother-of-five.
The model, once by her pseudonym Jordan, is also a singer and author. She launched her album, "A Whole New World" with Peter Andre in 2006 and had a stint on reality TV. She has written 11 bestseller novels, six autobiographical books, two series of children's books, and a book on fashion.

On March 10, something incredible happened on Jessie Ware's Table Manners podcast. Dan Levy, aka David Rose from Schitt's Creek, was Ware's guest and the conversations that took place were truly wonderful. Dan told both Jessie and her mum Lennie all about his adventures of living in London and working for the talent agency ICM, an experience he had after going through a particularly taxing breakup.
"I was living on Charlotte Street. It was the early days of the internet so I don't even know how I found this place. It was a tiny little apartment on the top floor above a restaurant," he told the Wares. He went on to explain that his time in London had been a hugely formative experience for him, as he struggled to combat social anxiety and insecurity in his younger days. "It was like an eat, pray, love situation, I knew I had...

In last weeks episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK, we saw the elimination of Tia Kofi who was known for her camp outfits but also shows how Bimini is excelling in both the completion and in real life.
The mini-challenge this week was the classic ‘Reading Challenge’ where the queens compete in an insult based, comedy challenge inspired by the cult classic film Paris is Burning. I have to admit that this whole trope of queens walking up saying “Oh no… No never, I’m too kind” and then switching to be an intense and aggressive character normally with something along the lines of “Let’s Go” has because somewhat overused throughout the Drag Race franchise. All the seasons of Drag Race (including the UK version) have this reading challenge and so many queens do this same performance to start the challenge which has become somewhat tiresome. This season...

Last weeks episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK will go down as one of the most memorable in episodes of Drag Race her-story! It started with all the queens been sent home and forced to quarantine for 7 months which was crazy; we had the return and second elimination of the international cabaret sensation Joe Black; and saw the premiere of one of the most annoyingly catchy songs to ever come for drag race. “U K Hun” by the United Kingdolls has been on loop for me since last week and made it to the #1 downloaded song on iTunes! We technically saw two eliminations last week as Veronica Green tested positive for the virus and so was unable to return to filming but was offered a free pass to next years competition. I recently discovered a video of Veronica Green singing on the BBC singing show “All Together Now...

Last week on “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” Ru let the queens have it with a real kick in the arse. Both Tia Kofi and Joe Black, the latter of which had freshly reentered the race by a vote of her peers, were taken to task for leaving too much to be desired in their runway presentations. As two members of the losing girl group in the singing challenge, they found themselves in the bottom and lip syncing to stay. In the end, Tia bested Joe and sent the first eliminated queen home for a second time.

It wasn’t too long ago we indulged in mawkish teen romance Everything, Everything – which depicted the anguish of a teenage girl who can’t go outside, only to fall for the boy next door. That is exactly the same narrative as we see in Scott Speer’s Midnight Sun, and sadly, this self-pitying teen flick is no less contrived than what came before.

A week ago saw the release of a teen romance with a twist. Love, Simon trod some familiar territory but did so with a quirky sense of humor and a new element as its hero was wrestling with the decision to come out to his friends and family while pursuing an online mystery crush. The result was a surprisingly sweet flick that connected with audiences, landing in the box office top five. This week’s release also concerns a high school senior who’s conflicted about revealing a secret. But with this young woman, her secret is known to a very close pal and her pop. It’s that hunky “boy next door” who’s kept in the dark (literally, as we’ll find out later). This young romance is complicated by an ultra rare affliction, so the plot has a long lineage in cinema. The brave hero/heroine facing...
