This new column for Sound on Sight will feature Cahiers du Cinema critics-turned-filmmakers. However, it will not cover the infamous New Wave directors, but four other filmmakers who wrote for the journal and subsequently became directors. What follows is a brief history of the journal and its association with the four filmmakers that will be covered in this column.
I. A Brief History of Cahiers du Cinema
Cahiers du Cinema has been a prominent film journal for the last 60 years, famous for introducing the concept of les politiques des auteurs, which became the auteur theory in North America thanks to Andrew Sarris, and more famous for playing a major role in the French New Wave. The journal has gone through many shifts and turns, beginning with Andre Bazin as the editor-in-chief to the current editor-in-chief Stephane Delorme.

The Studio Canal Collection’s Blu-ray of Mulholland Drive was always going to be a pleasure to watch.
The film is not as divisive as Lynch’s later Inland Empire, nor as suffocating as Lost Highway and its place on numerous top 10 films of the decade lists is well deserved. Some may find its narrative shifting sands unsettling, but Lynch is at his most playful and energetic here; Mulholland Drive is simply one of the best films of all time.
Conceived around the time Lynch was knee deep in cherry pies and Black Lodges, Mulholland Drive is Lynch’s sinister take on the Hollywood dream; it is a mystery and a muddle and your understanding and enjoyment of the film will deepen and change the more you watch it, making it the perfect film to add to your collection.
It is one of the most perfectly realised and poetic visions of Hell on Earth,...

Optimum continues its mission to release some of the best back catalogue classics on Blu-ray in September with another burst of titles from their Studio Canal Collection. Next up are The Third Man, Delicatessen, Mulholland Drive, The Graduate, Le Cercle Rouge, The Pianist and Breathless. It's a hugely eclectic collection of superb modern and not-so-modern cinema with surely something for anyone who possesses even a hint of filmic discernment.
All include a host of exclusive extras, with input from some serious names from both industry and academic circles which put those filler heavy packages to shame. And, if previous releases from the label are anything to go by, the transfers will be top notch too.
The titles above are released on 13th September 2010 through Optimum Home Entertainment.
Extras and tech specs are as follows - there's a lot, so take a deep breath:
