- Wore his Star of Courage medal pinned over his heart for the entire shoot while playing Andrew Garcia in Flight 93 (2006). Mr. Garcia was one of the five men who rushed the cockpit; this was done to honor the memory of these heroic men.
- Recipient of the Star of Courage, Canada's second highest Medal of Honor for bravery. Actual citation: "Kenneth Kantymir saved a boy, aged six, and his younger sister from a burning trailer, on 11 July 1977. Mr. Kantymir was summoned to the fire by the children's mother and had to crawl through several compartments of the mobile home to reach the children's bedroom. Flames at this time were burning through the walls and were producing blistering heat and blinding smoke. When the rescuer found the boy, he was lying face down in a bunk. He lowered the child to the floor and held his head down while searching for the girl. The child was discovered lying unconscious against a wall and carried by Mr. Kantymir from the trailer in one arm while he held the boy securely with the other."
