While Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun pushed a 13-year-old Christian Bale to the limelight, transitioning into a prominent adult actor wasn’t easy. It would be another 13 years after the release of Spielberg’s war drama before the actor would eventually land his footing in Hollywood, thanks to his brilliance in American Psycho.

Nebula is venturing into new frontiers. As the creator-operated streaming service unveils its latest slate of original content, it is also launching a new division. Nebula News, a partnership between the streamer and Jack Kelly of Tldr News, will deliver the latest headlines.
Kelly will take the lead as the news director of Nebula’s new unit. In a media landscape rife with misinformation and sensationalism, Nebula plans to apply its educational, fact-focused bent to its news coverage. Kelly and his team will roll out originals while providing context for trending stories.
“Tldr has been working with Nebula for a couple of years now, and I’ve been consistently impressed by Nebula’s commitment not only to the creator community but also to creating the best experience and product for Nebula viewers,” Kelly said in a statement. “So, when I was approached to head up Nebula’s new News product,...

What are the odds that a movie about a "cranky middle-aged dad and his two best friends" finding themselves to be "out of step in a changing world of millennial CEOs and powerful preschool principals" is good? Well, a 17% Rotten Tomatoes score should tell you all you need to know about Bill Burr's "Old Dads," the latest project from the, I think it's fair to say, legendary stand-up comedian.
While Burr's comedy specials will forever be held up as some of the best ever performed, his irascible funnyman schtick hasn't always transferred well to his movie and TV projects. The Bostonian has demonstrated an impressive knack for dramatic roles in the past, appearing in "Breaking Bad," "The Mandalorian," and even showing up in a "Barry" cameo. But with "Old Dads," Burr tried to harness his own experiences being an older father and turn them into a movie which he wrote,...

Plot: Three best friends become fathers later in life and find themselves battling preschool principals, millennial CEOs and anything created after 1987.
Review: If you are a fan of Bill Burr’s stand-up comedy, you likely know what you are in for with Old Dads. Burr’s directorial debut is an amalgam of his observations and rants from his twenty-plus years as a comedian told through the fictional story of a trio of fifty-year-olds dealing with generational change. On the heels of a year that has seen semi-autobiographical films starring comedians like Burt Kreischer and Sebastian Maniscalco and the series Bupkis with Pete Davidson, Old Dads is a fictional story that relies heavily on Burr’s sense of humor. But, instead of capitalizing on Burr’s red-hot temper as a source of constant comedy, Old Dads is a relatively traditional movie that tries to tell several different kinds of stories without...

Three fiftysomething jerks extend their adolescence way, way beyond the breaking point in Old Dads, a boorish and obnoxiously vulgar comedy that, since it can’t claim any other great distinction, might well have been expressly written to break the all-time record for use of the f-word in the major studio movie. Even Lenny Bruce might be twitching in his grave over this one.
All the same, director/co-writer Bill Burr has more often than not had his finger on the pulse of the populace, so this slap-dash-feeling Netflix offering likely will prove a solid audience-pleaser.
There certainly have been plenty of comedies featuring guys who put off behaving like adults for as long as they can; perhaps The Odd Couple still stands as the quintessential example of this subgenre whose roots go pretty deep. In this case, the three buds behave as if they should be enrolled, not in grade school,...

There are some pretty controversial characters and moments on the long-running FX comedy series "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," but none are as tricky to represent than Jack Kelly (Andrew Friedman), better known as "Uncle Jack." The character is a rather inept lawyer obsessed with the size of his hands who also seems to have some much darker tendencies. Over the past 16 seasons, it's been made pretty clear that Uncle Jack is a pedophile and that he probably molested his nephew Charlie (Charlie Day) in childhood, which is pretty horrible. One might think that portraying such a monstrous character would be the hardest part of filming as Uncle Jack, but in a Reddit Ask Me Anything thread, Friedman revealed that it was actually some technical difficulties that really caused him some trouble.

Filmmakers loves an underdog and movies have a long tradition of supporting the rights of workers, dating all the way back to the silent era. Here are some classic movies that celebrate workers’ right to strike for better wages and safer working conditions and the sometimes unlikely allies they find along the way. Many are based on true stories, including John Sayles’ masterful “Matewan,” about a coal miner strike in West Virginia, as well as Barbara Kopple’s Oscar-winning documentary, “Harlan County, USA.”

“Newsies” (1992)
“Headlines don’t sell papes, Newsies sell papes!” In this exuberant and pro-worker musical, Christian Bale’s Jack Kelly leads a group of newsboys in a strike against penny-pinching newspaper owner Joseph Pulitzer. They’re aided by Bill Pullman’s kindly, reform-minded journalist and, of course, Teddy Roosevelt, who was then governor of New York.

"Young Billy Young" is the kind of film of which it can be said, "They don't make 'em like that anymore". Not because the movie is so exceptional. In fact, it isn't exceptional on any level whatsoever. Rather, it's the sheer ordinariness of the entire production that makes one pine away for an era in which top talent could be attracted to enjoyable, if unremarkable, fare such as this. Such films, especially Westerns, were churned out with workmanlike professionalism to play to undemanding audiences that didn't require mega-budget blockbusters to feel they got their money's worth at the boxoffice. Sadly, such movies have largely gone the way of the dodo bird. In today's film industry, bigger must always be better and mid-range flicks such as are no longer made. However, through home video releases such as Kino Lorber's Blu-ray of "Young Billy Young" and streaming services such as Amazon Prime,...

It’s a collection of 6 — count ’em Six — horror and sci-fi curiosities from the ’40s and ’50s, aimed straight at covetous fantasy film addicts. Wacky scripts, strange characterizations and poverty row production values are on view, but the fine transfers reveal professional cinematography and occasional impressive direction. The films are definitely of their time — the censor-inhibited 1940s pictures rely on spooky situations because they can’t show blood or too much violence. And a pair of low-end B&w ‘scope thrillers from the ‘fifties drive-in era do more with less, cutting corners in interesting ways. Viavision anoints the shows with expert commentaries and a couple of real surprises: an entire extra feature and a rare 1950s TV show.

Trucks for victory! No deadheads on this run! Bald Tires for Adolf! Budd Boetticher’s two-fisted teamsters haul General Patton’s supplies through a France not completely cleared of German resistance, a gearshift in one hand and a buxom mam’selle in the other. Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” ends with Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) being welcomed into Sharon Tate’s home for the first time after his bloody confrontation with members of the Manson Family cult. Some Tarantino fans have wondered if Rick finally being introduced to one of Hollywood’s most promising rising stars would reignite his dwindling career, but it turns out that’s not what’s in store for the “Lancer” actor.
During an appearance on “The Margaret Cho” podcast, Tarantino weighed in on what happens to Rick’s career after “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” ends. The answer shouldn’t surprise anyone familiar with the real-life figures Tarantino based Rick on when scripting the character.

ABC hopes to strike a new chord at its annual broadcast of the American Music Awards. A few of the ads slated to turn up in the event will so short viewers might miss them if they blink.

Step aside, Archie, there's a new Riverdale heartthrob in town. Casey Cott, aka Kevin Keller, recently teamed up with Broadway star Jackie Burns for the latest installment of Wicked's "Out of Oz" series, and it's pretty magical, to say the least. The two sang a mashup of "Dancing Through Life" and "The Wizard and I" from the musical, and we can't help but melt over Cott's gorgeous vocals.
His insane singing skills shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, though. Not only did he attend Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, but musical theater is in his blood. His brother, Corey, is best known for playing Jack Kelly in Newsies and originating the role of Donny Novitski in Bandstand. Seriously, can we get more of Kevin singing during Riverdale season three? Or better yet, can Cott star in the upcoming Wicked movie adaptation? Please and thank you.

Dance superstar Maddie Ziegler has even more reason to celebrate the first of every January. New Year's Day happens to be her anniversary with boyfriend Jack Kelly! And she seems thrilled this Aussie dude has danced into her life, to say the least. As far as the Internet can tell, Jack is Maddie's first real relationship. Granted, Who's Dated Who does say Maddie had an "encounter" with Dance Moms co-star Gino Cosculluela, but that was probably the kiss we witnessed on the Lifetime show. Anyway, Maddie and Jack celebrated their one-year anniversary this Jan. 1. Maddie marked the joyous occasion on Instagram, writing, "2018! Today is such a special day for us. It's been one year with the most amazing boy I've ever met. We've grown so much together, and I'm so thankful for all of the laughs and smiles together! … I've never been so happy. Who doesn't miss watching Chloe Lukasiak and Maddie Ziegler on Dance Moms? While both gals achieved stardom off of the Lifetime series, their time as Aldc members is what fans always come back to. "I see Maddie at events. I'm still close with Brooke and Paige and I talk to Nia," Chloe previously told Life & Style. "I think we're all still pretty close — just the way our lives and careers are all going, it's all different directions. We try to hang out with each other as much as we can, but it's a little bit hard when there's eight of us all going in completely different directions. When you go through an experience like that, it kind of just builds like, really stable friendships because we were leaning on each other during those times." The 16-year-old almost instantly became a fan favorite thanks to her iconic dance routines — and today,...

Disney’s 2012 Tony-winning Broadway musical Newsies makes its debut on the big screen this week, playing in movie theaters nationwide for three days beginning Thursday as part of a new partnership between Fathom Events and Disney Theatrical Productions.
