“Every big story is made of little stories,” a novice Egyptian newsreel director patiently explains to those who question his footage in the epic historical drama “Image of Victory.” It’s also a truism that pithily describes veteran Israeli helmer Avi Nesher’s engrossing 19th feature, which highlights young people during a dramatic time of history and brims with small episodes of courage, passion and humor.
Inspired by real events, the film provides a nuanced look at circumstances leading up to the June 1948 fighting at Kibbutz Nitzanim, viewed from both the Egyptian and Israeli perspectives. Its consideration of how storytelling and visual images can be weaponized makes it a tale with great resonance for these times. Now streaming on Netflix, it marks Israel’s most expensive production, and the rousing result indicates that it was money well spent.

Netflix’s “The Eddy” was a long time coming for Grammy winner Glen Ballard. The songwriter had been a fan of jazz from a very early age, spending his formative years in New Orleans, and while he is primarily known for penning pop music, “The Eddy” gave him the opportunity to show his passion for jazz. This being a series centered on a Parisian jazz club, Ballard felt especially qualified to recreate experiences from his life. “I’ve lived in and out of Paris most of my adult life,” Ballard says in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby. “I’ve spent so much time there so I always knew that jazz never died in the city of Paris. When I was living there in the ‘90s I would go to jazz clubs every week.” Watch the full video interview with Ballard above.

Damien Chazelle made history when he won Best Director at the Oscars for the modern movie musical “La La Land” (2016). He was 32 when he collected that trophy, which made him that category’s youngest winner in history. Just a few years later the wunderkind could follow that with a trophy or two for his work on the small screen. He’s a director and executive producer of the Netflix limited series “The Eddy.”

The eight-episode musical premiered on May 8 and it’s about — surprise, surprise — jazz, not unlike Chazelle’s “La La Land” and “Whiplash” (2014) were. This time the story follows Andre Holland as the owner of a French jazz club whose daughter (Amandla Stenberg) comes to visit. Chazelle directed the first two episodes, and he’s not the only pedigreed artist behind the camera.

Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land, First Man) made his television debut on Friday with The Eddy, a contemporary Parisian jazz drama series that just dropped its first full season on Netflix. The show also released its soundtrack, which features a jazzy title track and theme for the show sung by St. Vincent.
The ballroom jazz-style soundtrack was written by Randy Kerber (who previously worked with Chazelle on La La Land) and by Glen Ballard, known for his production on Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill as well as his Michael Jackson co-writes.

Glen Ballard, best known for co-writing Michael Jackson’s Man In The Mirror and producing Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill, walked into Alan Poul’s office in 2013 and told the Six Feet Under and Tales of the City exec producer that he wanted to make a show about a jazz club in contemporary Paris.
Six years later, that show, The Eddy, is debuting on Netflix.
“It was a very unusual genesis,” Poul tells Deadline. “Glen left me with a CD with a dozen songs on it. I listened to them and they blew me away. Half of those songs are in the first season of The Eddy.”
Poul subsequently went to see the band that Ballard put together, in venues such as The No Name on Fairfax a few times and one of those times brought Damien Chazelle, whose feature Whiplash had premiered at Sundance but had not yet been released theatrically yet.

Commentary Commentary“There’s no number in this movie that we didn’t try cutting at some point.”
La La Land may not have won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, but it’s still a delightfully mesmerizing experience with one of last year’s best endings. It hits Blu-ray/DVD next week, and along with an 80 minute making-of documentary the disc features a commentary with the film’s award-winning writer/director and composer.

1. Chazelle wanted his Cinemascope opening to replicate the widening aspect ratio he recalled seeing in Frank Tashlin’s 1956 film, The Girl Can’t Help It.
