Documentary on June Carter Cash who was born into music royalty and a tough, funny trailblazer star – and the co-writer of Ring of Fire
The title is “June” – no surname. Which is surely director Kristen Vaurio making a point, since her documentary about June Carter Cash makes a convincing case that the country singer has for too long been under-appreciated and overshadowed by her husband Johnny. The stereotype of June is that she was the wifey-for-lifey who saved Cash from his demons, but the woman who emerges here is tough and funny, blazing a trail for herself as an artist. As Reese Witherspoon, who portrayed her in the movie Walk the Line, points out – still indignant – it was June who wrote Ring of Fire (with Merle Kilgore), one of Cash’s most famous songs.
Carter was born into country music royalty, the Carter family, and was touring by her teens.

Johnny Cash performed several country music songs that are enduring classics and crossed over to the mainstream. He didn’t write all his hits, and “Folsom Prison Blues” set his bank account back 75,000 after a plagiarism lawsuit, but that doesn’t change the fact The Man in Black remains a country legend because of his tunes. One of Cash’s signature songs, “Ring of Fire,” comes with a twisting and sordid story that is song-worthy itself.

Aside from Cash’s deep-throated baritone, “A Boy Named Sue” and “Ring of Fire” don’t have all that much in common. The former is a relatively simple country-folk storytelling narrative. The latter is a genre-bending country-latin tune whose mariachi horns might be the highlight.

From the minute he burst out of Memphis in the mid-1950s, Elvis Presley became a figure of American myth. But what about Baz Luhrmann’s extravagant and expansive movie about the singer, “Elvis?” Is it more mythmaking, or does it stick to the facts about the life and career of Elvis Aaron Presley?
In a way, doing a fact-check on a Baz Luhrmann movie is silly. This is the director who relocated Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” from Verona to South Beach Miami, who started the movie “Moulin Rouge!” with the card “Paris 1900” and then within 10 minutes brought in songs from “The Sound of Music,” Nat King Cole, the Beatles and Nirvana.
The fun of Luhrmann is that you don’t get historical accuracy, you get a delirious kind of Baz-mania.

On a pleasantly warm late-September afternoon in Nashville, Carlene Carter leads an informal tour of the charming 100-year-old Queen Anne-style home she shares with her husband, actor Joe Breen. New to the neighborhood since leaving their Santa Ynez, California, home after a decade, it hasn’t taken the couple long to adjust to life in a community largely populated by fellow creative types. Seated on the front porch, Carter chats with Rolling Stone Country while taking drags on an electronic cigarette, which she notes “smells like Skittles.”

Although Hank Williams’ death at age 29 on January 1st, 1953, marked a premature end to what had been a remarkable career, his legacy has survived — and thrived — not only through his classic recordings but also through the two generations of family members who have forged their own paths in country music and beyond. Williams, who was born 95 years ago on September 17th, was followed into entertainment by his two children, Hank Williams Jr. and Jett Williams, and more recently by Hank Jr.’s children Shelton (a.k.a. Hank 3), Holly and...

Fifty-five years ago this summer, on August 4th, 1963, housewife Connie Smith won a talent contest in Columbus, Ohio, earning a performance spot on a local Grand Ole Opry concert where songwriter Bill Anderson took note of her and encouraged her to make a trip to Nashville when the two met again at a New Year’s Day concert in Canton, Ohio.
As 1964 unfolded for the young wife and mother, she garnered yet another invitation – this time a spot on the popular Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree, which followed the Grand Ole Opry on Wsm radio.

The daughters of late country music legend Johnny Cash have launched an investigation into why they never received royalties from his hit, "Ring Of Fire." Rosanne Cash and her sisters Kathleen, Cindy and Tara - daughters by Cash's first wife, Vivian - claim not to have received money - estimated to be millions of dollars - from publishing rights to the song, and have hired California lawyer Eric Bjorgum, an intellectual property expert, to investigate the matter. Bjorgum tells New York Daily News, "His only son (John) has received the lion's share (from "Ring of Fire")". John Cash is the music legend's only child by June Carter Cash. Cash and June Carter Cash are said to have shared the copyright on Ring of Fire with songwriter Merle Kilgore. In her book I Walked The Line, Vivian Cash writes Johnny told her, "I'm going to give June half credit on a song I just wrote called 'Ring of Fire.' When she asked why, he answered, 'She needs the money and I feel sorry for her.'" A lawyer for the Cash estate tells fancast.com, "We find it noteworthy that their authorship has been unchallenged for over 40 years, and was only questioned after the deaths of Kilgore and the Cashes." Cash died in 2003 after suffering complications from diabetes.
