Chucky. Charles Lee Ray. The Good Guy doll. Thirty-five years later, Brad Dourif‘s foul-mouthed serial killer from the toy chest is a household name, a movie maniac that every kid grows up to fear … and eventually love through laughter. But that almost didn’t happen as the road to the long-running blockbuster horror franchise is paved in rage and remorse.

Beyond the combative behind-the-scenes stories, they also dissect the SFX challenges in bringing Chucky to life, the heyday of Cabbage Patch Dolls, Ronald Reagan’s deregulation of advertising to children, the voices, the mythos, all of it...

Don Mancini’s Curse of Chucky had its world premier at the 2013 Fantasia Film Festival. As part of the event, the writer-director and stars of the film sat down for interviews about the project itself. What follows is the interview conducted with writer-director Don Mancini.
Curse of Chucky arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on October 8th with both R-rated and unrated versions included, courtesy of Universal Studios.
****
Edgar Chaput: Thank you for sitting down with Sound on Sight and congratulations on your world premier at the Fantasia Film Festival. You started this franchise back in 1988. It’s 2013 and the Curse of Chucky is upon us. At this stage is it actually easier to come up with a Chucky story because you know this character so well or there are there still considerable challenges? You want to do a new one, but can you do that’s new?
Don Mancini: Oh,...

Chicago – Start planning your Halloween marathon now. Last week, we highlighted the Universal wave of titles that included greats like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Army of Darkness” and we’re back with another wave of modern horror classics, including Oscar winners “Silence of the Lambs” and “Misery”.
The Blu-Ray Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s regular column that highlights synopsis, tech details, and special features for titles that might otherwise fall through your Blu-Ray buying cracks, doesn’t usually play favorites, but every good horror fan should have “Manhunter,” “Silence,” “Child’s Play,” and “Misery” in their collection. Whether or not you need to own the “Wrong Turn” films is something only you can decide.
All five titles were released last week, September 15th, 2009. Both “Child’s Play” and “Misery” are presented in a Bd/DVD combo pack with both HD and standard versions of the film.

Despite what they say, I just don’t get why the Child’s Play franchise needs a reboot. A new film that picks up where Seed ended could be pretty damn cool if they kept it dark, but at least series creator Don Mancini’s doing it himself.
In a recent lengthy chat with AICN, Manicini and producer David Kirshner discuss the upcoming 20th Anniversary DVD (pre-order it here), as well as the impending remake. The first bit of good news? Brad Dourif will be back as the voice of Chucky. ”If you could recast it,” Mancini said, ”you would want the actor to sound kind of like it, but it would feel weird to just be completely different I think.”
Going back to my comments about a sequel instead of a remake, Mancini also offered up a rationale for starting the franchise over that draws on that idea. ”I...
