Offering a singular perspective on Russia’s current pariah status in much of the world is Gaukur Ulfarsson’s “Soviet Barbara,” probably the most enjoyable — as opposed to depressing — documentary involving the invasion of Ukraine you’re likely to see. It focuses on Icelandic multimedia artist Ragnar Kjartansson’s preparation for exhibits that would open a major new museum in Moscow.
That launch proves fatefully ill-timed in terms of larger events, however, even as his splashiest custom creation provides ironic commentary on recent Russian history by reprising an American TV soap opera that had been an unlikely imported smash in the nation’s immediate post-ussr years. The colorful intersection between art, ideology, patronage and politics should appeal to a wide range of nonfiction outlets and programmers.

The 26th annual amfAR Gala Cannes raised more than $15 million last week in support of amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, and its pursuit of a cure for HIV/AIDS.
The star-studded black-tie event held at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, during the Cannes Film Festival, was presented by Chopard, Jollyone, and Young Merry Real International Group.
The evening opened with a surprise performance by Austrian operatic tenor Andreas Schager, whose powerful rendition of “Nessun Dorma” set the stage for a spectacular line-up of musical guests. Global superstar Mariah Carey had the audience singing along to her chart- topping hits “Emotions” and “Always Be My Baby.” Legendary singer Tom Jones performed iconic songs such as “Soul of a Man” and “It’s Not Unusual.” British rock band The Struts performed their hit single “Body Talks”. Well played, Ragnar Kjartansson. Well played. The Icelandic performance artist got in a (presumably good-natured) dig in at Yoko Ono, as a participant in Ono’s art exhibition at the Reykjavik Art Museum in Iceland, thanks to a bit from a classic episode of “The Simpsons.” As one of 12 artists to take part in the exhibition, Kjartansson’s contribution to the collection was a single plum, floating in perfume, in a man’s hat. Sharp-memoried “Simpsons” fanatics will recognize the reference as a call-back to the 1993 episode “Homer’s Barbershop Quartet,” which envisioned a vocal combo founded by Homer Simpson called The Be Sharps,...

The invitation to the super-secret Jay-z event came out of nowhere, three days before it was scheduled to happen. The event's producer, the beloved-in-the-art-world gallerist Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, e-mailed, asking whether I'd be free Wednesday at noon. The rap artist, impresario, cultural force, and art collector would be performing his new track “Picasso Baby” at the Pace Gallery in Chelsea. For. Six. Hours. Over and over and over. Heck yes. But even though I'm a fan — The Black Album blew my mind — I had a queasy feeling about this. Though hip-hop is not exactly my bailiwick, performance art I know a little about, and this Jay-z thing sounded depressingly familiar. It had a loud echo of Marina Abramovic, the performance diva known for her marathon performances-spectacles-drudgeries. It also reminded me of the Icelandic wizard Ragnar Kjartansson’s renditions of the same song performed live non-stop for hours. Last season at...

Sigur Rós don't want you to choke and die. They have a video to help you through such a problem, were it to occur. The music video to "Ég anda," directed by Ragnar Kjartansson, is the first of eight commissioned clips to accompany each of the songs off of Sigur Ros' new album "Valtari." Kjartansson recruited some real characters for this, who waver between Wes Andersonian deadpan to cartoonish ecstasy in this step-by-step instructional vid. The band ask from each of their filmmakers/artists to create a video of whatever comes to mind when the creators hear their songs. This one apparently...
