Matthew Fox (World War Z, Alex Cross, “Lost”) joins with Academy Award® winner Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln, No Country For Old Men, The Fugitive, Hope Springs), newcomer Eriko Hatsune and award-winning Japanese star Toshiyuki Nishida to bring to life the American occupation of Japan in the perilous and unpredictable days just after Emperor Hirohito’s World War II surrender. As General Douglas MacArthur (Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation, he assigns an expert in Japanese culture – and psychological warfare – General Bonner Fellers (Fox), to covertly investigate the looming question hanging over the country: should the Japanese Emperor, worshiped by his people but accused of war crimes, be punished or saved? Caught between the high-wire political intrigue of his urgent mission and his own impassioned search for the mysterious school teacher (Hatsune) who first drew him to Japan, Fellers can be certain only that the...

Classroom Exercise: Webber’s Latest Historical Drama Dry and Sleepy
Arriving with all the subdued excitement of a vaguely written history textbook comes Peter Webber’s latest film, Emperor, which documents the true story of one man’s task to investigate Japan’s leader General Hirohito during America’s post World War II occupation under the control of General Douglas MacArthur. The task is to unveil just how responsible the Japanese leader was for reprehensible war crimes, the evidence to be used to decide how the Americans pardon or prosecute. While this sounds like a deliriously ripe scenario for intrigue and melodrama, Webber’s film contains neither, instead deciding to saddle it with a deadening war time romance, and rotating mechanically back and forth between a politically explosive scenario and lost love. While Webber is best known for his debut film, an adaptation of the novel The Girl With a Pearl Earring,...

Hirohito sat on the Chrysanthemum Throne through the Japanese invasion of China, the attack on Pearl Harbor and all through World War II. But at the end of the war, there were two emperors in Tokyo. Douglas MacArthur, supreme commander of the Allied powers in the Pacific, ruled Japan as a potentate, overseeing reforms that turned the country away from militarism and feudalism and setting the stage for Japan's ascent as an economic superpower.
"Emperor" is about both men, about MacArthur deciding whether to prosecute Hirohito as a warmonger and war criminal. Was the "God Emperor" merely a passive observer to his country's crimes against humanity? Or did he encourage it?
Tommy Lee Jones gives us a saltier version of the image-obsessed MacArthur, a cagey, guarded and cunning man who wanted to cover himself if he decided to absolve the emperor of blame, but brave enough to know that "a...

An indie historic drama Emperor which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year to a standing ovation, finally gets a full-length trailer. We only had a chance to see the short clip from a grand historical romance-drama of the kind too rarely seen these days.
Peter Webber’s film takes place in the immediate aftermath of World War II and stars Matthew Fox as General Bonner Fellers, an expert in Japanese culture assigned to assist General Douglas MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones) in investigating whether or not the beloved Japanese Emperor should be punished for war crimes.
And, despite Jones bankable presence in the trailer, this is a tale focused on Fox’s character and his investigation. The romance with the mysterious school teacher Aya (Eriko Hatsune) weaved into it. Emperor, scripted by Vera Blasi and David Klass (Kiss the Girls), also stars Kaori Momoi, Toshiyuki Nishida and Aaron Jackson.

"Let's show them some good old-fashioned American swagger." While I like to imagine this is what Tommy Lee Jones says to himself before he steps onto any movie set ever, it's actually a line he delivers as General Douglas MacArthur in the World War II historical drama Emperor. We got a first look at the feature helmed by Peter Webber (Girl With A Pearl Earring) in a short but strong clip last fall, as Emperor was set to make its screen at the Gala Presentation of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. Now as this ambitious post-war movie gears up for its spring release, we've got a full trailer that's got plenty of salty American swagger, plus loads of intrigue. Check it out below, thanks to Yahoo: Penned by Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup) and David Klass (Walking Tall), Emperor centers on General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox), an American soldier tasked...

Wu-Tang Clan leader turned actor to helm film about life of Mongol emperor, based on a script by John Milius
RZA is to follow his directing debut The Man with the Iron Fists with a biopic of the Mongol emperor Genghis Khan, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The rapper, producer and actor will be working from a screenplay by John Milius, the writer and director of 1982 fantasy epic Conan the Barbarian (starring Arnold Schwarzenegger), who is also known for his work on Apocalypse Now and Dirty Harry. Milius, a colourful Hollywood character who was the inspiration for John Goodman's unhinged Vietnam veteran Walter Sobchak in the Coen brothers' The Big Lebowski, has been trying to get the project off the ground for several years and was at one point lined up to direct.
Khan's empire lasted a century and a half and eventually covered nearly a quarter of the Earth.

Anyone who spent their teen years driving around in their mother’s hand-me-down car with the windows rolled down and the Wu Tang Clan blaring on the stereo knows that the RZA, the Gza, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, the Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, and the Masta Killa have a deep, abiding love of kung-fu movies. And, in the years since their musical heyday, RZA has taken this love further by composing the score for modern martial arts movies like Ghost Dog and Kill Bill, by trying his hand at being an actor, and even by becoming a director with his upcoming martial arts epic The Man with the Iron Fists. RZA doesn’t plan on stopping there either, apparently his experience directing a movie was so positive that he’s already lined up two more projects. Heat Vision is reporting that the musician turned movie maker has signed on to direct the long-gestating, John Milius...

"The Man With the Iron Fists" hasn't even hit theaters yet, and already RZA has his next two movies lined up.
The Hollywood Reporter has the news that the Wu-Tang Clan frontman-turned director will next helm the long-gestating biopic "Genghis Khan" and then will tackle the action thriller "No Man's Land." His directorial debut, "The Man With the Iron Fists," comes out Friday, so this news is pretty good evidence that the film is going to be as good as we hope it will be.
"Genghis Khan" is written by "Apocalypse Now" scribe John Milius and has been in the works for a while now. Milius is also executive producing the film and had once been slated to direct it. The flick is preparing to shoot in China next year, which is the same country where RZA shot "Man With the Iron Fists."

We're only a few days away from finding out how the debut feature from Wu-Tang legend RZA turns out: his Eli Roth-penned, Tarantino-produced, Russell Crowe-starring kung-fu epic "The Man With The Iron Fists" hits theaters on Friday, so reviews should be dropping any day now. But however it's received, the rapper-turned-actor-turned-director is making it clear that he's in the filmmaking business for the long run: he attached himself to the bonkers-sounding Grant Morrison adaptation "Happy!" recently, and today, he's added two more prospects to his directorial dance card. The Hollywood Reporter bring news that RZA's next film is likely to be "No Man's Land," a "Warriors"-esque actioner about a man who steals a gangster's diamond, and goes on the run with a dancer. Penned by novelist Trey Ellis and David Klass ("Walking Tall"), it's produced by former 20th Century Fox boss Bill Mechanic, and RZA's.

We got our first look at Tommy Lee Jones in Peter Webber’s upcoming historical drama, Emperor, back in May, which was swiftly followed by the first sales posters for the film, ahead of going on the market at Cannes.
With the announcement that the film will make its world premiere at Tiff, we’ve now got our first good look at Jones’ co-stars, Matthew Fox (Lost, Alex Cross) and Eriko Hatsune (Norwegian Wood).
“Nearly seven decades after the end of World War II, it is difficult to fully grasp just how devastating was the effect of Emperor Hirohito’s surrender to Allied forces in August 1945, along with his accompanying surrender of any claim of divinity. The events of that summer, galvanized by the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, signalled much more than mere military defeat for Japan: it called into question the country’s most entrenched beliefs.

The events of that summer, galvanized by the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, signalled much more than mere military defeat for Japan: it called into question the country’s most entrenched beliefs.

Traction on Girl with a Pearl Earring director Peter Webber‘s next film, Emperor, has been a little slower than some earlier reports indicated. (Which is to say, a movie that was supposed to begin shooting in January should be doing so on January 30th.) But it’s kicking along, and our latest reminder is undoubtedly a strong one — Webber has announced (via Twitter) that Alexandre Desplat will be scoring the film, serving as a reunion between the director and composer from Pearl Earring.
Starring Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones, the historical drama — written by David Klass and Vera Blasi — is a love story about General Bonner Fellers, who must decide if Japan’s Emperor Hirohito should be hanged for his actions in World War II, all while searching for a lost flame. Emperor is expected to hit in 2013.

[1] If Lindsay Lohan seems like less than ideal casting [2] for the role of Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime's Liz and Dick, how does Megan Fox strike you? In a talk with E! [3], executive producer Larry Thompson named the Transformers actress as one of the other names up for the lead. "I've been talking to Lindsay Lohan directly, and with her reps, and have been in conversations with other actresses, including Megan Fox," he said. "It's a very serious selection.... It's like casting for Hollywood royalty." It's unclear how seriously Fox is considering the part. While she's not the most respected actress around, she's got a couple of interesting movie roles coming up this year -- Jennifer Westfeldt's Friends With Kids and Judd Apatow's This is Forty -- and a Lifetime original movie seems like it'd be a step down for her. Whatever the decision, though, it'll have to be...

After star-making turns in 2009's Zombieland, 2010's Easy A and, most recently, in this summer's The Help, actress Emma Stone has the luxury of being able to choose her next project and, after appearing in the upcoming comic book adaptation of The Amazing Spider-Man and the crime drama Gangster Squad, it looks like she will be returning to comedy.
Deadline reports that Stone is attached to star in Little White Corvette, a comedy about a nerdy brother and his wild sister (Stone, we assume) who travel to Miami to sell off cocaine they found in the trunk of their late father's car (we'll assume it's a Corvette). Stone has been interested in the script since last summer, but now that it has sold to Gk Films, shooting will begin in late summer when Stone is available.

Since he finally made it off the Lost island, Matthew Fox has been trying to build his film career. He'll be seen this year in both World War Z and I, Alex Cross and has just signed on to a slightly smaller film, snagging the lead in Peter Webber's Emperor.
The story (inspired by true events) is set in Japan right at the end of World War II. Fox is on as General Bonner Fellers, acclaimed as a Japanese expert and faced with a daunting decision: should the emperor, Hirohito be charged with war crimes and hanged for his actions in the global conflict?
But because big historical stories always seem to need a little love interest to keep them ticking along, there's also a subplot about Fellers trying to find the girl he met when she was an exchange student in the States before the breakout of hostilities.
