Van Partible's animated series "Johnny Bravo" debuted on the Cartoon Network on July 14, 1997. It was one of four new shows that Cartoon Network premiered in 1997 and 1998 that served as a declaration for a new creator-forward direction the network was taking. "Johnny Bravo" debuted alongside Genndy Tartakovsky's "Dexter's Laboratory," David Feiss' "Cow and Chicken," and Craig McCracken's "The Powerpuff Girls." In 1999, that lineup would be complemented by "Ed, Edd n Eddy," and "Courage the Cowardly Dog." These shows were all quirky and idiosyncratic and attracted a generation of fans.
"Johnny Bravo" was about a barrel-chested, Elvis-voiced lug who lived with his mother and attempted to find love in the big city. His buffoonery and vanity, however, usually kept him single. Johnny was played by prolific voice actor Jeff Bennett, who has been acting professionally since 1991. Van Partible had been working on a version of the show as early...

Billionaire philanthropist and ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, MacKenzie Scott has recently donated $640M to over 300 nonprofit groups. After announcing her decision to donate on Tuesday, the former wife of the Amazon founder gave away a staggering amount to help people in difficult situations.
Billionaire MacKenzie Scott from Charlie Ross interview
According to reports, MacKenzie Scott’s donation announcement came after Elon Musk accused her of “destroying Western civilization” by distributing money. Initially promising to donate $250M, Scott seemingly doubled the amount after Musk’s taunt. Now, her total donation turned out to be more than what Eternals and The Marvels earned at the box office combined.

Introducing the Fast & Furious Franchise’s Gravity-Defying Antics When it comes to the Fast & Furious franchise, we’re not exactly in it for a physics lecture. These films have cornered the market on stunts that would make even Evel Knievel do a double-take. Sure, they’re as plausible as my chances of winning an Oscar, but who’s complaining? They’re the cinematic equivalent of a deep-fried candy bar—terrible for you, but oh so good. Tank You Very Much for the Destruction Fast & Furious 6 Remember that time in Fast & Furious 6 when a tank rolled over cars on the highway...

Tom Hanks will host and narrate a 20-part documentary series about World War II on the History Channel.
The project from Nutopia is one of several unveiled Wednesday by A+E Networks as it convened its virtual upfront presentation to advertisers.
Along with the Hanks series, History is also teaming with Barack and Michelle Obama on a podcast exploring America’s Reconstruction Era. It is getting into business with former New York Yankees great Derek Jeter for two series, one about great warriors and the other about entertainers. And Danny Trejo will also host and narrate a new History series exploring “some of the greatest underground mysteries and the fascinating stories surrounding buried artifacts and lost civilizations,” as a press release put it.
As yet untitled, the Hanks-hosted docuseries “offers a comprehensive view of World War II,” History says, “thanks to new scholarship and rarely seen archive, that illuminates both the...

Revered and reviled U.S. diplomat Henry Kissinger, whose death at 100 on Nov. 29 was met with the widespread view that his realpolitik was responsible for some of this country’s worst global war crimes, loved American celebrity — both his own, an expression of state power, as well as that of others, especially performers. He was “the ultimate starfucker,” noted Daniel Drezner, professor of international politics at the Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, in an appraisal published earlier this year on the occasion of Kissinger’s centennial.
Prior to meeting President Richard Nixon in 1967, Kissinger made frequent trips to Santa Monica to consult with the Rand Corporation, a global policy think tank. But after being appointed as national security adviser by the newly elected president in 1969, his profile skyrocketed — and the glitz of Hollywood was within reach. Fascinated since childhood with American popular culture, Kissinger pursued the...

Rockstar is arguably the defining studio of the last 20+ years of gaming. During that time, Rockstar essentially reshaped our collective idea of what a game could be by introducing millions to phrases like “open-world” and “sandbox” while continuously pushing the envelope in terms of mature content. Even after other developers started to make more “Rockstar-like” games, Rockstar found ways to raise the bar and show why they are one of the great blockbuster developers in gaming history.
While Rockstar’s library is defined by those open-world masterpieces, the studio’s catalog is much deeper and more interesting than it always gets credit for. Dig a little deeper into Rockstar’s history, and you’ll find a variety of games that have largely been forgotten. Though some deserve to be lost to time, others are begging to be rediscovered (or discovered) as they are absolutely worthy of that logo that we...

The news never stops, but for Jake Tapper, it does occasionally share time with other creative pursuits.
Today, what’s lured him away from the CNN studio (temporarily) is the promotion of his new book. He’s seated on the patio of The Pendry, a West Hollywood social club meets hotel, drinking the first of several iced coffees, dressed casually — comparatively speaking, for a person whose day job requires suits pressed within an inch of their life — in a breezy button-down shirt and Air Jordans. He arrived early for the breakfast interview, due in part to the habits of a longtime live news anchor, but also because he’s on East Coast time, rising hours before most of Los Angeles.
Tapper is releasing a third novel in his budding literary empire, which began with 2018’s The Hellfire Club, a political thriller that followed young Congressman Charlie Marder, and his wife,...

The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, announced today that it has acquired what its curators describe as “a significant collection of items and archives” from the late filmmaker Sam Peckinpah, best known for Western cinema classics such as “The Wild Bunch,” “Ride the High Country” and “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.”
The donation to the Museum comes courtesy of filmmaker/historian Lathan McKay, who Michael R. Grauer, curator of the Museum’s Cowboy Collections and Western Art, describes as “incredibly dedicated to Sam Peckinpah’s legacy,” and who chose the Oklahoma City institution because of the Museum’s commitment to ensure Peckinpah’s belongs and papers would be “preserved, cataloged, researched, interpreted and studied with great respect.”

The CW’s fall 2023-2024 primetime schedule looks nothing like the network’s previous lineups. Gone are all the comic book-inspired superhero series, and in their place are British and Canadian imports along with unscripted reality shows.
All American is the only original The CW scripted series to appear on the upcoming season’s roster. Walker, which was recently renewed for a shorter season, will return midseason. And the network still hasn’t decided what to do about Gotham Knights, All American: Homecoming, or Superman & Lois.

Def Leppard are set to perform at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip as part of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally on August 10th, and their set will be immediately preceded by a double-daredevil stunt involving a bike jump over a high-wire act.
The event is being billed as “The Death Wire Daredevil Spectacular” and will see motorcycle Wall of Death daredevil Kyle Ives jump a motorcycle over Blake the Flying Wallenda, who will attempt one of the longest high-wire walks of his career — “The Death Wire Walk” — over the Sturgis Buffalo Chip amphitheater with no safety netting. If anyone’s capable of such a feat, it’s these two: Blake and Kyle are the descendants of extreme sports godfathers The Flying Wallenda Brothers and the Ives Brothers, respectively.

Harrison Ford has always been a roll-with-the-punches type of guy. He's famous for doing his own stunts, and frequently getting injured in the process. He's broken his ankle, bruised his ribs, and, on the set of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," suffered a herniated disc while riding an elephant. While making "Raiders of the Lost Ark," he tore his Acl when he got run over by a plane. At the age of 79, he messed up his shoulder rehearsing a fight scene for "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny." He's basically the Evel Knievel of American movie stars.
The overriding theme of Ford's career is that nothing comes easy (he didn't even have a real acting career until he was in his thirties), and the fact that he's still plugging away it as he enters his eighties suggests he's more than okay with a little struggle. This unflappable...

Before Chris Evans grabbed a star-spangled shield and donned the mantle of Captain America, and even before the late, great, B-movie maestro Albert Pyun directed the straight-to-video 1990 "Captain America" movie, there was Universal's failed "Captain America" feature-length television film, which aired in 1979. Now a footnote in the history of superhero cinema, director Rod Holcomb's "Captain America" fits neatly next to the studio's 1978 "Dr. Strange" adaptation as similar attempts at seeing how Marvel's comic book characters could (extremely loosely) translate to low-budget, live-action TV material. Unfortunately for Holcomb, the project was a bit of an embarrassment.
Holcomb had already directed three episodes of Universal Television's "The Six Million Dollar Man" before taking on the task of adapting "Captain America," but the director was frightened that the production ended his career before it barely even began. The film starred Reb Brown, also known in B-movie circles from "Yor, the Hunter from the Future,...

20 years ago, comic book movies were in an odd place. "X-Men" helped open the floodgates in 2000, particularly for Marvel, but it was the absolutely astonishing success of 2002's "Spider-Man" that represented the point of no return. Thus, other superheroes quickly made their way to the silver screen in the years that followed, with mixed results. One fascinating example is 2003's "Daredevil," which starred Ben Affleck as the Man Without Fear, and his future wife (and eventual ex-wife) Jennifer Garner as Elektra. The movie wasn't quite a flop, though not quite a hit, and didn't start a franchise for Matt Murdock like Marvel's mutants and Peter Parker now had. It was an up-the-middle, modest misfire.

Horror has always been one of the most controversial film genres. From the silent frights of "Nosferatu" to Wes Craven's 1970s shockers, horror films are the harbingers of moral panic and audience debate. Though American horror films have spurred plenty of moral outrage on our shores, it's not common for films to be banned outright in the United States. However, that doesn't mean that American horror films receive the same reception in other counties.
Countries have specific rules regarding censorship and movie ratings, leading some to ban certain American horror films for violating federal guidelines. Horror movies tend to be the most censored genre because of their depiction of violence (as well as sex and nudity), making some horror films unsuitable for viewing due to their explicit depictions of depravity. Censorship like this comes from ethical debates about whether or not pop culture influences the masses: Can violent movies make people more violent?...

The Jackass series debuted on MTV in 2000, quickly becoming one of the most popular television shows. It followed the antics of a group of friends as they engaged in outrageous stunts, pranks, and dangerous physical challenges. The show cast included Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-o, Chris Pontius, Wee Man, Dave England, Preston Lacy, and Ryan Dunn.
Despite parental and political worries about the show’s potential impact on younger viewers, it quickly skyrocketed in popularity. After three seasons of wading through constant censorship notes from MTV, Knoxville and his pals decided to end their run; thus began, Jackass’ successful transition to the silver screen era.

Renowned American stunt performer Robbie Knievel has died at 60 after a life lived following the daredevil tracks of his late father Evel Knievel, his older brother Kelly confirmed.
Robbie had been grappling with advanced pancreatic cancer and had known about his declining health for the past six months.
Robbie’s critically acclaimed, three-decade-long career saw him perform over 350 seemingly superhuman jumps across various manmade structures, break 20 world records and soar past the Las Vegas Caesars Palace fountains in 1989, a feat that his father had failed 22 years earlier.

Despite constant warnings from Evel to never follow in his footsteps, and the various surgeries and traumatic injuries suffered by his father that he witnessed, Robbie chose not to listen.
Among four siblings, Robbie said that he was disciplined most because his rebellious nature saw him always emulating and challenging his father.

Italian film legend Gina Lollobrigida, who achieved international stardom during the 1950s and was dubbed “the most beautiful woman in the world” after the title of one of her movies, died in Rome on Monday, her agent said. She was 95.
The agent, Paola Comin, didn’t provide details. Lollobrigida had surgery in September to repair a thigh bone broken in a fall. She returned home and said she had quickly resumed walking.
A drawn portrait of the diva graced a 1954 cover of Time magazine, which likened her to a “goddess” in an article about Italian movie-making. More than a half-century later, Lollobrigida still turned heads with her brown, curly hair and statuesque figure, and preferred to be called an actress instead of the gender-neutral term actor.

Robbie Knievel, son of superstar ’70s motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel and an accomplished showman in his own right, died in hospice care after a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to multiple reports. He was 60.
Like his father, Kneivel was adroit at leveraging his abilities on a motorcycle into a media spectacle. Over the course of his career, he had eight live television specials centered around his feats.
He soared over the fountains at Caesars Palace 22 years after his father famously crashed in a similar attempt. In a pay-per-view jump-off with British motorcycle stuntman Eddie Kidd, the duo jumped for distance in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. In 1998, Knievel attempted a record-breaking jump of 231 feet over 30 limousines at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. His father was there to support him. In 1999, Knievel executed a building-to-building jump between two 13-story towers at the Jockey Club in Las Vegas. He made a jump...

Robbie Knievel, the second-generation motorcyclist and daredevil who jumped the fountains of Caesars Palace and the Grand Canyon in the high-flying bootstraps of his father, Evel Knievel, has died. He was 60.
Knievel died Friday in Reno, Nevada, after a battle with pancreatic cancer, his brother, Kelly Knievel, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Daredevils don’t lead an easy life,” he said. “Every time they finish a jump, they have to come up with another one. They are entertainers, after all.”
Twenty-two years after his father crashed spectacularly in a stunt at the newly opened Caesars Palace on New Year’s Eve, Knievel successfully cleared the hotel fountains in Las Vegas in April 1989 and exclaimed, “That was for you, Dad.”
In 1999, he and his motorcycle soared a personal record of 228 feet over the Grand Canyon, but he broke his leg on the landing. His father had tried to make it over the...

Evel Knievel’s son Robbie Knievel – who was also known as Kaptain Robbie Knievel – has died at the age of 60. Kneivel’s brother has confirmed that the daredevil passed away after being in hospice following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.
Robbie took after his famous father’s stunt performing and was known for his death-defying motorcycle jumps. He racked up a total of 350 jumps over his lifetime.
He began riding motorcycles at age 7 and his father taught him how to jump a bike over various objects. Robbie was performing by the age of 8, with his first show at Madison Square Garden in New York. He would begin touring with his father at the age of 12.
In 1996, Robbie leapt over 10 limousines at the Lake Elsinore Storm Stadium in California celebrating the return of the Elsinore Grand Prix. By 2003, he was jumping over 15 Diet Pepsi trucks at the Chinook Winds Casino in Oregon.

At the beginning of every Taskmaster series, the contestants know that they can only wear one outfit for all the task filming, for continuity purposes. So what would you pick? Stepping into the unknown, with all manner of physical and mental trials and tribulations ahead, the sensible bet would be… well, something sensible.
And yet, series after series, we see contestants don the most ridiculous getup to take them through their Taskmaster journeys, including a dressing gown, a safari suit, and an Evil Knievel helmet. And series 14 is no different: three of the contestants – Munya Chawawa, Fern Brady and Dara O’Briain – are sporting particularly impressive themed jumpsuits.
The question is: does a special outfit give contestants special powers? The edge over the competition, even? Let’s crunch the numbers.
Tim Key: 1980s-style tracksuit and headband over a shirt and tie (Series 1) Series rank: fourth
Okay, so we’re off to a bad start.

“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” which just debuted on Disney+, is arguably the most delightful Marvel Studios series yet. Created by Jessica Gao and starring Tatiana Maslany as the lawyer-turned-superhero, “She-Hulk” is effervescent and refreshing, a balmy tonic after the darkness of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and other, more somber Marvel Studios productions.
Most of this is due to Gao, whose sensibilities are so perfectly suited for the character that you’ll wonder why she hadn’t done a Marvel project before. As it turns out, she tried.
In fact, “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” was spawned, in part, from a pitch she made to Marvel Studios for the “Black Widow” movie. When TheWrap asked her about the pitch, she was reluctant, in case she wants to use elements of it for a future project. But she described it in broad strokes.

In case you were keeping track, the fifth film in the Despicable Me franchise is a sequel to 2015’s Minions, which was itself a prequel to the first two films in the series. It’s a testament to Hollywood’s commitment to recycling, and certainly understandable in light of the series’ blockbuster status. Minions: The Rise of Gru gives fans more of what they’ve come to expect, mainly Gru acting evilly, the Minions acting stupidly, and enough clever gags that will fly over its target audiences’ heads but keep their adult chaperones from dozing off.
Not that sleeping would be possible, considering that this entry is the most frenetic and action-packed of the bunch. Parents may want to consider taking their tykes early in the day, since they may be so revved up after seeing it that bedtime could become contentious.

Jackass. With the triumphant return of the Jackass gang, one of the few true events of theatrical moviegoing in the pandemic era, the franchise built on absurd stunts, crass hijinks, and bruised cocks has at last been seriously accepted as the masterful trash it’s always been. Although much Jackass analysis revolves around the on-screen content—from the cinematic form of bold stunts to the interpersonal dynamics and bodies of the cast—the uniquely digital nature of the series is central to its reclamation. It’s that ramshackle camcorder aesthetic, bordering on snuff compared to glossy Hollywood productions, that gives the film series part of its distinct appeal. As much as the naked bodies and buttholes, the illicit sensation of going to a multiplex to watch MiniDV tape makes the first Jackass movie what it is—even as the image resolution and budget have increased, there’s an intimacy and...

The omnipresent Dwayne Johnson provides a short intro to “Stuntman,” the kind in which a celebrity host (in this case also one of the film’s producers) jovially warns us that the acts we’re about to see were performed by trained professionals, and under no circumstances should we “try any of this at home.” That would seem a no-brainer. Then again, this documentary’s most appreciative viewers will doubtless be little boys and girls (as well as big ones) who can imagine no career more intoxicating than being the person actually executing thrills ’n’ spills that will appear in finished films or TV shows to have been done by stars like the erstwhile Rock.

"I will go out finishing what my hero started... Life's funny like that." Disney has launched the trailer for a documentary film called Stuntman, from director Kurt Mattila. This originally premiered at the 2018 Los Angeles Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, but was never been released until this year. And it might be worth the wait - Stuntman will be streaming on Disney+ this month. The film follows professional stuntman Eddie Braun as he prepares for and attempts the most dangerous stunt in cinematic history – a recreation of Evel Knievel's Snake River rocket jump. With new music from rock icon Slash (featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators) and a score by Jeremy Zuckerman, this Stuntman film "straddles the line between documentary and non-fiction action film, offering a rare look into the entertainment industry's most dangerous and anonymous profession through the eyes of one of its renowned veterans...

Having been portrayed by George Hamilton in a 1971 biopic, motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel took on the fictionalized role of his own life in this surprisingly well made actioner, the last film directed by the prolific Gordon Douglas. Produced by an uncredited Irwin Allen, it boasts a surprisingly strong cast and production values. Knievel’s life supplied grist for TV movies in 1974, 2004 and 2005.

A vanity production along the lines of All That Jazz and Purple Rain, Evel Knievel eschews the pseudonyms employed by Prince and Bob Fosse and just plays himself, a vainglorious stuntman who took the phrase “daredevil” literally. Veteran director Gordon Douglas keeps a tight rein on the action, helped considerably by a supporting cast including Red Buttons, Leslie Nielsen, and, as Knievel’s hard drinking mechanic, Gene Kelly (!).

Evel Knievel’s son is suing Disney for trademark infringement accusing the studio of using his father’s likeness for the Duke Caboom character voiced by Keanu Reeves in “Toy Story 4” without permission.
The lawsuit, obtained by TheWrap and filed by Kelly Knievel on behalf of K & K Promotions, makes comparisons between Duke Caboom and Knievel, sharing side by side images of Knievel in his signature white costume alongside pictures of the toy Duke Caboom and says the character is clearly patterned after the daredevil.
Though it never refers to Knievel by name, “Toy Story 4” refers to Duke Caboom as a 1970s toy based on Canada’s greatest stuntman. And the lawsuit even compares a commercial seen in the film for the Duke Caboom Stunt Cycle to a real commercial and toy modeled after Knievel and was released in 1973. Evel Knievel once said that he “would always rather be in the arena fighting than be a spectator.” The legendary stunt rider’s son is clearly taking those words to heart with a new lawsuit against Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar over the Duke Caboom character introduced in last year’s Toy Story 4.
“Defendants have used in commerce, and continue to use in commerce, the likeness, reputation, and image of Evel Knievel in the film Toy Story 4 through Defendants’ depiction of Duke Caboom, and has exploited the same connection through marketing, promotion, advertising, and sales of Toy Story 4, and in connection with the manufacturing, distribution, marketing, advertising, promotion, and sales of the Duke Caboom action figure, all without the consent or approval of K&k,” claims the trademark-infringement complaint filed this week in federal court in Las Vegas, the site of many of Evel’s most death-defying exploits.

Evel Knievel’s son is on a collision course with The Walt Disney Co. and Pixar over a movie daredevil character named Duke Caboom.
