Indican Pictures has acquired North American rights to 2023 Cannes Un Certain Regard Jury Award winner Les Meutes (Hounds), debut feature of Moroccan writer-director Kamal Lazraq.
The dramatic thriller, sold internationally by Charades, had its world premiere in competition at the Marrakech film festival before screening at last year’s Cannes and getting theatrical runs in Australia, France and Italy. Indican is planning a theatrical release in the US and Canada this summer.
Shot in Casablanca, in Berber languages and French, the film has also won awards at festivals in Haifa, Pingyao and Stockholm.

Exclusive: Indican Pictures has acquired North American rights for Australian filmmaker Alena Lodkina’s fantasy thriller Petrol about the unsettling friendship between a shy film student and an alluring performance artist with a troubled past.
The film originally world premiered at Locarno’s Filmmakers Of The Present competition in 2022, and then enjoyed a buzzy North American premiere at the Lincoln Centre and MoMA’s New Directors/ New Films Festival earlier this year.
Indican Pictures co-founder Randolph Kret negotiated the deal with UK-French film company Alief, with the latter reporting that the distribution company had beaten bids from two other key indie players on both price and its release plans which include a theatrical component.

West Hollywood-based indie distribution outfit Indican Pictures (“Gossamer Folds”) has secured North American rights for Santiago Fillol’s political thriller “Matadero” (“Slaughterhouse”).
The debut fiction feature from the Argentine director saw its world premiere in competition at Locarno in 2022, with further festival bows at Mar Del Plata and Seville before December theatrical runs in Argentina and Spain via Cinetren and Begin Again Films, respectively.
Negotiations were handled by Randolph Kret of Indican Pictures alongside Brett Walker and partner Miguel Angel Govea at Alief (“Driving Mum”), who handle world sales on behalf of the filmmakers outside of Argentina, France, Spain and Switzerland.

Set in a small East Texas town, the film centers on the events surrounding the appearance of an image of Jesus on a screen door.
