Katy Perry has cashed in on her catalog of hits, selling her stake in her master recordings and publishing rights to Litmus Music for a reported $225 million, according to Billboard.
The deal covers the five albums Perry released for Capitol Records, starting with 2008’s One of the Boys and ending with 2020’s Smile. That run also includes 2013’s Prism, 2017’s Witness, and Perry’s blockbuster 2010 effort, Teenage Dream, which spawned five Number One Hot 100 hits.
Perry’s decision to sell to Litmus makes sense, as its co-founder Dan McCarroll, used to run Capitol Records.

Rock’n’roll musicians have a habit of thinking of themselves like secular gods, but the truth is they’re not infallible. No matter how successful a band may or may not have been in the past, there’s never any guarantee their next record will live up to the heights they’ve previously scaled. Sometimes, everything that once went right just all goes wrong.
There are often extenuating circumstances, of course. Band members may leave due to death, drugs or just good old-fashioned “musical differences”, or an ambitious new direction may turn out to be more like a swerve into oncoming traffic.
Whatever the cause, the fact remains that just because an album has the name of a classic band slapped across the cover, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the album itself will be a classic.

Rolling Stone‘s interview series King for a Day features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and singers who had the difficult job of fronting major rock bands after the departure of an iconic vocalist. Some of them stayed in their bands for years, while others lasted just a few months. In the end, however, they all found out that replacement singers can themselves be replaced. This edition features former Manzarek–Krieger singer Dave Brock.

The Doors’ Robby Krieger played jazzy guitar on “All the Time in the World,” the closing track of Alphabetland, X’s first album in decades, and now the L.A. punk group is releasing another song they recorded together.
On Alphabetland, “Strange Life,” was a relatively straightforward punk rocker (and a catchy one at that), but Krieger’s contribution to the new version gives the song a little more texture, as he plays some pleasantly meandering slide-guitar licks underneath the chorus. The track is one of two B-sides that comprise X’s new outtakes comp,...

After his last album Concrete & Mud was released in 2018, Sam Morrow found that he was often getting tagged with the “outlaw country” label. That album’s brawny mix of country-funk and retro boogie nodded to the influence of Waylon Jennings and Jerry Reed, undoubtedly, but the Houston native wasn’t entirely comfortable with the categorization.
“Even when I say it out loud, it makes me cringe a little bit,” he says, calling from his current home in Los Angeles. “’Outlaw’ sounds weird. I’m not an outlaw. I play video...

Like many younger fans of the Doors, Leah Moore was intoxicated by their aura, their mystery, when she was a teen. The comics writer recalls being introduced to the band via 1987’s The Lost Boys, particularly the Jim Morrison poster the vampire teens kept in their cave. Then, in 1992, she convinced her physics teachers to take her class to visit Morrison’s grave during a class jaunt to Paris.

After a nearly 30-year gap between records, Los Angeles’ punk laureates X have dared to make a new album. As recently as three years ago, they said they would never even try to record something new. Even though the four musicians that recorded their landmark Los Angeles album had been playing together again for two decades at that point, they swore up and down that the chemistry wouldn’t be there. Luckily for them, they were wrong.

The Doors: Break on Thru – A Celebration of Ray Manzarek is a hybrid concert and documentary capturing a 2016 performance in Los Angeles by surviving Doors members John Densmore and Robby Krieger to honor fellow Doors member Ray Manzarek on what would have been his birthday on February 12. The Doors were born when Ray Manzarek met Jim Morrison on Venice Beach in 1965. Ray became the beating heart of The Doors and the architect of their intoxicating keyboard sound. In this lacklustre documentary, surviving members of the Doors reunite on stage to pay tribute to the band’s late keyboard player
Here’s a deeply uncool, almost embarrassingly un-rock’n’roll Doors documentary; it’s unlikely to get toes a-tapping let alone light a fire. It’s essentially a filmed gig, reuniting the two surviving Doors, guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, on stage with assorted members of Foo Fighters, Jane’s Addiction, Stone Temple Pilots and more filling in for Jim Morrison and keyboardist Ray Manzarek. The hits comes thick and fast, tightly arranged and slickly performed, but this lineup of well-preserved mostly male musicians gives the show the bland atmosphere of a celebrity tribute band.
The gig is dedicated to Manzarek, who died in 2013, and director Justin Kreutzmann pads out the gig footage with an interview the keyboardist gave and fresh input from Krieger and Densmore.

When the Doors’ producer, Paul A. Rothchild, suggested adding orchestral strings and horns to guitarist Robby Krieger’s song “Touch Me,” Krieger was not happy. It was two years after Sgt. Pepper, and he says he was wary of the band being seen as copycats. “I said, ‘Oh, God. Now we’re copying the Beatles,’ and the Stones had just done their version of the orchestra thing,” he recalls. “So it was like we were keeping up with the Joneses or something.” Also, he worried the move might alienate the band’s fan base.

The Doors will include a trove of previously unreleased recordings on the upcoming 50th anniversary deluxe edition of their 1969 album, The Soft Parade, out October 18th.
The band teased the project with one such rarity: An raucous early version of their 1970 track “Roadhouse Blues” — which would appear on the band’s next album, Morrison Hotel — sung by organist Ray Manzarek, who’s cheekily billed as “Screamin’ Ray Daniels.”

The Doors’ Robby Krieger led a sultry rendition of “Back Door Man,” the blues standard that appeared on the band’s debut album, with vocalist-guitarist Orianthi and Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro at a guitar all-stars gig. As she sings, she alternates between declaring, “You’re my backdoor man” and “I’m your backdoor man,” claiming the sexuality that Howlin’ Wolf and Jim Morrison put into the song for herself. Krieger plays a slippery, melodic solo before passing it over to Navarro for a flashier, metal-tinged blues lead and...

A day after saying it stood by the story, Playboy in Germany acknowledged Tuesday that its published interview with Ennio Morricone had “reproduced incorrectly” some of the quotes attributed to the legendary Italian composer.
The magazine did not specify whether the incorrect quotes included comments in which Morricone appeared to disparage Quentin Tarantino as “a cretin” who produced subpar films. But it was those alleged remarks that caused a stir over the weekend and prompted a swift denunciation by Morricone, who said that he had not made them.
Playboy said that new information had caused it to reassess the matter, and blamed the writer, Marcel Anders, for the errors. The magazine also apologized to Morricone, who turned 90 a few days ago.
“Up to now, we have considered the freelancer who conducted the Ennio Morricone interview on our behalf to be a renowned print and radio journalist,” German Playboy editor-in-chief Florian Boitin said in a statement.
