- When she was three, her family moved to Fontana, California and she began singing while still a child and, by the end of her teen years, she'd turned professional.
- She was named Miss Fontana of 1953. She then went to Las Vegas and became a showgirl and singer. In 1955, she was officially crowned "Miss Cue," a reference to nuclear testing done in Nevada that year under the name "Operation Cue." Her crown was a mushroom cloud and she posed with several members of the military in a swimsuit and her crown.
