He ran a bookstore in Berkeley, California, and later became a
newspaper journalist. He had strong ties with the local American Indian
community. He was a co-founder of the Malki Museum on the Morongo
Indian Reservation, and helped establish the Malki Museum Press, which
publishes books about California Indians.
