Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy still has a lot of aging to do before it catches up to Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) — recall that the hobbit is celebrating his 110th birthday with the long-expected party that makes up the early beats of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” But as each entry in the series reaches its 20th anniversary — “Fellowship” last year, “The Two Towers” this year, and “The Return of the King” in 2023 — it’s worth reflecting on more than the shadow of the past of the films themselves. Or more than their theatrical cuts, at least.
A month prior to the premiere of “The Two Towers,” New Line Home Video unveiled the “extended edition” of “Fellowship of the Ring,” with 30 minutes of additional footage spread across six new and 20 expanded sequences. The DVD box set’s packaging resembled a well-worn tome bound in green leather,...

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’: Turning the Mines of Moria Into the Halls of Khazad-dûm
It’s hard to imagine now that there are several movies and a TV show based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, but at one point there were very different, competing visions of what Middle Earth looks like. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” production designer Ramsey Avery first fell in love with Tolkien illustrations by the Brothers Hildebrandt in the ’70s and has watched artistic interpretations of the author’s legendarium evolve over the decades, to the point where the work of Alan Lee and John Howe was so central to Peter Jackson’s vision for his “Lord of the Rings” films, they were both hired as concept artists for the series.
Avery’s particular challenge on “The Rings of Power” was to build environments that are both familiar and unfamiliar — some unevolved versions and some much more evolved versions of the...

Before Netflix launched a gaming platform, they experimented with interactive specials such as “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” and “The Boss Baby: Get That Baby!” But its new interactive gaming special, “Cat Burglar,” offers a new wrinkle: a nostalgic Tex Avery–inspired cartoon complete with a full orchestra, which plays like an extended Looney Tunes short.
“It’s about an hour and a half, which we treated as basically a feature-length Tex Avery cartoon,” said director and co-creator Mike Hollingsworth, a producer on “BoJack Horseman.” The result is just like what you’d find in a “Tom and Jerry” or a Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoon. It follows a cat named Rowdy (James Adomian), who tries to steal a priceless piece of art from a museum while attempting to evade a security guard dog named Peanut (Alan Lee).

Peacock has shared the first look at its new upcoming comedy series “Killing It,” streaming this April.
Created by “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” producers Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, “Killing It” stars Craig Robinson as Craig, a man who competes in a state-sponsored python hunt in his quest to achieve the American Dream. The series co-stars Stephanie Nogueras as Craig’s ex-wife Camille, Jet Miller as his pre-teen daughter Vanessa and Rell Battle as his younger brother Isaiah. Claudia O’Doherty, Scott Macarthur and Wyatt Walter round out the cast.
“We love all the ambitious, challenging, thematically-rich series that populate the current peak-tv landscape,” said Goor in a statement. “We also love jokes. So, we tried to make a show that could deliver both. We wanted ‘Killing It’ to explore America’s quasi-religious obsession with entrepreneurship and wealth, and we also wanted it to be funny. Really, really funny. Plus, we wanted it to have big snakes.

Getting up to leave as soon as the end credits start: is that a bad thing?
The recent piece on this site about 'credit offset' brings up an important issue that has been the cause of some heated debate among my friends and dearly beloved recently: should cinema audiences stay put for the end credits of a movie? Should people stay in their seats while anything up to 10 minutes of credits sweep by, or should people get themselves up and vacate the cinema so that the hard-working cinema employees can sweep up their rubbish in time for the next showing?
Now, being a Wittertainee and a cinephile, I am anticipating a stream of irate responses along the lines of “Of Course cinema audiences should stay put for the credits! How is this even a question?!”
There are two main reasons for cinema fans’ passionate advocacy for staying in your seats.

I love J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth universe. I was sucked right into that world the day that I read The Hobbit for the first time as a kid. These Middle Earth stories have played a huge part in my life and inspired my imagination. After Peter Jackson's films were completed, I never thought that I'd be whisked away in a new Middle Earth adventure.
Well, a new story has been uncovered that was written by Tolkien in 1917. The story is called The Tale of Beren and Luthien. It tells a prequel story that takes place "centuries before the events of Lord of the Rings during the First Age of Middle Earth, the story tells the tale of Beren, a mortal man, and the romance and adventures he shared with the immortal elf Luthien." The two characters are the distant ancestors of Aragorn and Arwen.

As hard as it is to believe, the works of J.R.R. Tolkien are approaching a century of existence. EW says Beren and Luthien, a book by the fantasy author, will be available next year as a standalone novel for the first time since its writing in 1917. Beren and Luthien tells the tale of love between a mortal man and an immortal elf, and the romance inspired the events between Aragorn and Arwen in The Lord of the Rings novels and subsequent films. Believe it or not, it tells a much sweeter story than you might initially realize.
Tolkien once told his son Christopher (who will be editing the story) that the characters Beren and Luthien were based on Tolkien's own romance with his wife Edith. There's something beautiful about a man's fictional story about his wife lasting a century to be showcased to the world. I think we all...

By this point, Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, and all-around Middle-Earth fans have collected roughly 17 different editions of these films. Despite the fact that the latest trilogy in the entire opus can't hold a candle to the first, they tend to be worth the purchase by virtue of the special features alone. It's because of that that I have no problem in reporting that Amazon has posted a listing for what they're calling the Middle-Earth Ultimate Collector's Edition.
The eagle-eyed folks over at io9 were the first to report the existence of this listing, which contains a reported 30 discs. That's right. Not one. Not two. But 30 discs, which accounts for five Blu-ray discs per film, which is staggering.
Here are the specifics from Amazon:

Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema jointly announced on Friday that the much-anticipated final film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy adaptation of the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, has now been titled The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies.
The film, previously titled “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” will be released worldwide December 17, 2014, with select international territories releasing on December 10, 2014.
Peter Jackson stated, “Our journey to make ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. ‘There and Back Again’ felt like the right name for the second of a two-film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced — after all, Bilbo has already arrived...

Viewed as the extended second act of the larger three-act epic that will be The Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is terrific, a dazzling, endlessly inventive adventure serial that is filled to burst with cinematic treats both large and small. Never anything less than intensely entertaining, and absent nearly every pacing issue that left its predecessor, An Unexpected Journey, a solid but uneven disappointment, Smaug is a treat, and will be a welcome breath of fresh air for fans of Peter Jackson’s cinematic Middle Earth.
Taken as a film, however – as the standalone, 161-minute entity that audiences will be watching this weekend – I find The Desolation of Smaug highly problematic, if not downright infuriating. With a cliffhanger ending that cuts things off mid-climax, the film is incomplete, a series of extremely tantalizing set-ups that has only the slightest of internal pay-offs, if even that. No matter...

Even though Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is getting mixed reviews I think one thing everyone can agree on is that it looked amazing! The cinematography and the visuals were spectacular! Thanks to ImagineFX we can show you some of the beautiful concept art that artists John Howe and Alan Lee created for the movie. They were the lead concept artists on The Lord of the Rings, and were in charge of helping create the world of The Hobbit trilogy.

A king he was on carven throne In many-pillared halls of stone With golden roof and silver floor, And runes of power upon the door. That poem inspired one of the winners of the Treasures of Middle-Earth Design Contest presented by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. We first wrote about this contest back in September, which was asking for submissions of all types, to design weapons and landscapes as well as creatures and characters. The complete selection of winners has been unveiled and includes an outstanding Hall of Durin piece, and the trolls painting seen above (and below). All the winners received exciting prizes. Four incredible entries were named the best of the best by the judges: legendary artists John Howe, Alan Lee, and Richard Taylor. The winners include Best Character: An Unexpected Party by dstoreystudio; Best Creature: The Great Debate by Glaib; Best Weapon: From the Dragon's Hoard by...

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”
The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the Wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of 13 Dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild, through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs and deadly Wargs,...

Given the epic undertaking that is Peter Jackson’s work on the Hobbit trilogy, you would expect post-production to be a hectic affair. If you saw any of the Lord Of The Rings post-production blogs or watched the extras, you know that even when the movies are close to release, there’s plenty of work still to be done. Jackson’s latest video blog takes us to his post-production facility and the insane scramble to edit, slot in effects and music and whisk the whole thing into shape. Take a look above.Jackson gives us a whirlwind tour of various post departments – the edit suite, visual affects, sound design and mixing etc. – but the story here is largely told by the huge team beavering away to get everything perfect. Even conceptual artists John Howe and Alan Lee are still hard at it, designing imagery to fill blue screen gaps or...

Because. They. Can. We can come up with dozens of reasons why theater owners would want us to literally move in to their places of business the weekend before the big premiere, but we think the first one covers the rest. Yes, advance tickets for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey go on sale tomorrow at noon, but so do tickets for the extended cuts marathon of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which will screen on December 7 and 8, the weekend before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey premiere.
And of course, there’s the question of which version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to see when it premieres the following weekend – IMAX? Hfr 3D? Standard 2D? How about all of them, you know, for comparison’s sake?
So find the most comfortable theater, with the best supply of Milk Duds, and get ready to settle in for two weekends in Middle-earth.

Couldn’t make it to Comic-Con earlier this month? Thanks to Peter Jackson for posting the eighth production video from the set of "The Hobbit," you can pretend you were there! The footage from the last production days in New Zealand is breath-taking and spine-tingling, but it won’t make the December 14 release date arrive any sooner.
Though you don’t get to see Q&A from the panel (maybe he'll post another video?), Jackson transports you to Bilbo’s house in the Shire like it hasn’t been nine long years since “Return of the King.” Reunited with “Lord of the Rings” favorites Sir Ian McKellan, Orlando Bloom and Andy Serkis, the video gives behind-the-scenes scoop along with insight into the makeup and prosthetic artists and set designers' many different processes.

Thanks to the efforts of the Hero Initiative and comics fans and pros, Robert L. Washington was able to receive a proper funeral.
On Monday, June 25th, a funeral service was held for Robert L. Washington III in the Bronx borough of New York City, with a second service to come in Detroit, Michigan. The service was attended by various comic book creators, classmates, and friends from Robert’s various creative, work, and hobby circles.
Through the actions of Robert’s friends from Milestone Media, Inc. and his classmates from The Roeper School, The Hero Initiative was able to use all of your donations to pay for the service and provide Robert’s mother and two of his sisters with the means to travel from Detroit, Michigan to New York and give him a proper funeral.

Ever since I launched Sound On Sight back in 2008, I’ve seen an average of 150 new releases each year, and every year since, I’ve been able to easily draft up a list of my fifty favourite films. In fact, there were so many great movies released in 2011, I have a list of 75 I feel worth recommending. They say they don’t make movies like they used to and they don’t – they in some ways make it better. 2012 is already lining up to be a banner year and some of my favourite filmmakers are back, including Quentin Tarantino, The Coen Brothers, P.T. Anderson, Wong Kar Wai and even Steven Soderbergh.

One year from today Peter Jackson's long awaited film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released in theaters! This will no doubt be the longest twelve month of my life, thankfully we have a bunch of great films between now and then to tide us over and keep our minds occupied. I'm excited as hell to jump back into Middle Earth and The Shire. The Hobbit is one of my favorite books of all time, and I can't wait to see it brought to life on the big screen! There's no doubt in my mind that Jackson will bring back that same magic we saw in The Lord of the Rings, This time it's being shot in 3D in 48 fps, and it will look spectacular!
Today an official synopsis for the film was revealed. If you've read the book then you already know the story, but it's still...

It's always a welcome surprise to wake up to a brand new production diary from the set of "The Hobbit." Peter Jackson and his team have really made these video blogs something to look forward to, and the latest continues the tradition of amping up anticipation for the two-part fantasy prequel.
The fourth production diary focuses on what is arguably the biggest difference between "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" films, the way it's being filmed. In the ten minute video, Jackson takes viewers through the technology being used to travel back to Middle Earth.
Not only is Jackson filming "The Hobbit" in 3D, but he's filming it at 48 frames per second. When the news originally broke, the frame rate made headlines because it was double that of a standard film. In this production diary, Jackson takes some time to explain how 3D has factored into production—including a...

Get out your red and blue 3D glasses, Peter Jackson has released his fourth behind-the-scenes video blog from the sets of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again in New Zealand, this time taking a closer look at how he's using 3D, why he's using it, the cameras he's using, etc. Along with the video I've also captured the above shot from the behind-the-scenes look, which gives you a look at how concept artists Alan Lee and John Howe have gone so far as to try and create old school red and blue 3D versions of their concept art with one red drawing and one blue drawing. Even better, it actually works if you have a pair of the glasses... Trust me, I tried. Just give the image above a click or click here for a larger version. As for the content of the video,...

As Jackson teases us with clues about The Hobbit, we can only speculate as to what Unexpected Journey he will take us on next
So there it is: Peter Jackson's forthcoming brace of Hobbit movies will be individually titled The Unexpected Journey and There and Back Again. Not the most exciting news to emerge from Wellington, where Jackson and his team are hard at work shooting his Lord of the Rings prequels back to back, especially as we had a pretty good idea this was going to be the case when it was reported in March that Wingnut films had registered both titles. The individual monickers do add to the continuing sense, however, that Jackson is working hard to forge a Rings-style high fantasy epic from rather unlikely source material.
I first commented on this phenomenon back in December, when it emerged that Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett, aka Legolas and Galadriel,...

Fan number one Valeria Kementari asked this: "Are we going to see the White Council attacking Dol Guldor?" Peter Jackson: "I'm not going to say just what and when, but I will confirm that both the White Council and Dol Guldur will feature in the movies. And not just in one scene either. Just how to visualise it has been a challenge, but fortunately Alan Lee and John Howe went crazy with ideas, and it should look pretty cool." "In fact to celebrate the start of these 20 questions, I'll show you an exclusive photo of the White Council planning the attack on Dol Guldur! Even if you don't want to be hit with spoilers, you should still take a look. For the first image of Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel brandishing an array of fearsome Elvish weapons." Here are his first questions and answers. If you want to ask him questions, feel free to jump over to his Facebook and do so!
Question #1
Steven Beddoe asked, “Will you have time to sift through 4,000 questions just to answer twenty of them?”
Yes, I will. I’ve been very busy recently, not just with shooting, but with location scouting and prep work during our days off, so I’ve found it hard to get to the questions. However, today I have enjoyed sitting down and reading through them all. I’ll get started and continue to answer what seem to be the most popular questions during the next few weeks (as well as some one-off, quirky ones!

However, today I have enjoyed sitting down and reading through them all. I’ll get started and continue to answer what seem to be the most popular questions during the next few weeks (as well as some one-off, quirky ones!

Peter Jackson answered the first of 20 fan questions on Facebook about The Hobbit . The fan asked if we're going to see the White Council attacking Dol Guldor. Here is Jackson's answer: I'm not going to say just what and when, but I will confirm that both the White Council and Dol Guldur will feature in the movies. And not just in one scene either. Just how to visualise it has been a challenge, but fortunately Alan Lee and John Howe went crazy with ideas, and it should look pretty cool. In fact to celebrate the start of these 20 questions, I'll show you an exclusive photo of the White Council planning the attack on Dol Guldur! Even if you don't want to be hit with spoilers, you should still take a look. For the first image of Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel brandishing an array...

As promised, here’s Peter Jackson’s first video from the set of The Hobbit. Enjoy
No word on the dragon, Smaug, as of yet. However, The Hobbit Blog posted this:
We receive a lot of questions about Smaug, and while it is a bit soon to let the dragon out of the bag, we can point you to this excellent bit of research by Forbes, which has just ranked Smaug in 7th place on the 2011 Forbes Fictional 15 ranking of the richest fictional characters.
As was first reported in the Hollywood Reporter, Andy Serkis, who played the iconic Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, has been tapped by Jackson to serve as second unit director on the two Hobbit films, which are now in production in New Zealand. Serkis will, of course, also be reprising his role as Gollum in The Hobbit.

As soon as Howard Shore’s delightful music from The Lord of the Rings kicks in on this first video production diary from Peter Jackson on the set of The Hobbit and I’m instantly transported back to the magic of the early 2000′s when I was fully engrossed by this franchise. Long before Obsessed With Film, these movies were the subject of my obsession with cinema for so many years. It’s pretty much impossible to watch this meaty 10 minute video diary below without feeling a massive wave of nostalgia for that time, especially as Jackson looks to be emulating so closely the set designs of what he made Tolkien’s Middle-Earth look like on film.
Seeing Peter Jackson on this set and talking about the The Hobbit- it’s really hard to imagine anyone else directing these movies. It’s even harder to believe all the trouble that...
