"It's hard for me to describe," a therapy patient tells Val of his latest problem. "It's something kind of f--ked up." "Good," she replies. "That's my specialty." Val, played wonderfully by Michaela Watkins, is the heroine of "Casual," a smart and often moving new dramedy debuting tomorrow on Hulu. She's 39, recently separated from her cheating husband, and she and teenage daughter Laura (Tara Lynne Barr) are living with her brother Alex (Tommy Dewey), cynical co-founder of an online dating service that's starting to blow up. "Casual" was created by Zander Lehmann, and executive produced by Jason Reitman. While the use of Alex's website as a central plot device, as well as the very active nature of Laura's sex life, could make this seem like a TV series version of Reitman's critically-savaged "Men, Women & Children," Lehmann, Reitman and company are telling a much more specific story here, about three people damaged in a particular way,...

The disappointments of family and love plus a little heartbreak will always be fertile soil from which to grow comedic possibilities. Hell, we've all been there and see ourselves in the jokes. However, as my video review above says, rarely have the consequences of those seeds seemed both so desperate and so funny as they do in Casual. Debuting on October 7 on Hulu, the series created by Zander Lehmann and executive produced and directed by Jason Reitman flourishes with…...

The rise in critical acclaim for television shows over the years has been well-documented, with a corresponding rise in interest among viewers to discuss and analyse television the way films are at festivals. While festivals dedicated to television shows, such as Atx and PaleyFest, are on the rise, film festivals still outweigh them.
For its 2015 incarnation, however, the Toronto International Film Festival will be doing something unique, beginning a programme dedicated to television. Titled the Primetime Programme, the section of the festival will conduct screenings and Q&A sessions just like the films that play at Tiff, focusing on specific episodes of shows instead. The lineup for the inagural Primetime programme has now been announced, and can be seen below.

Casual won’t be all about easy sex. At Hulu’s first TCA panel of the day, show creator Zander Lehmann said the upcoming comedy’s characters are "open" about everything. “They talk about things, they share these things in a not too serious way," Lehmann said. "I think the ultimate idea is they’re casual about things, things don’t matter as much as we want them to.” Hulu gave TCA attendees a look at Casual, which Lehmann promises will buck recent conventions in more ways…...

Jason Reitman is coming to television, but not traditional television. Hulu announced this morning a straight-to-series order for "Casual," a new comedy which will be executive produced by Reitman. Slated to be a half-hour, single-camera comedy series, "Casual" will be written by Zander Lehmann. It is the tale of "a dysfunctional family with a bachelor brother and his newly divorced sister." The two will experience dating (not each other, presumably), living together, and raising a teenager. The Oscar-nominated Reitman ("Up in the Air," "Men, Women, & Children"), who has previously worked in TV directing two episodes of "The Office," will helm the first episode of "Casual." The first season will run for 10 episodes. Speaking of the producer, Craig Erwich, Senior Vice President and Head of Content for Hulu stated that Reitman, "uniquely blends comedy and drama in a way that touches the human spirit. We are honored to work with him...
