Debating the horror genre’s artistic value is tacky. Measuring its success by the box office can be just as boring. But I’d bet you a head-start in a chase sequence that those metrics still steer how Hollywood talks about its longest-surviving obsession at many prestige events.
Not so at The Overlook Film Festival: a community-minded summit that fundamentally reinforced my belief in scary movies and the types of people who make, critique, promote, and protect them.

These past two years I've been fortunate to experience everything from a séance and a Vampire Ball to Halloween costume parties in April at The Overlook Film Festival (you can read all about it in my previous event report), and as I prepare to attend "summer camp for horror fans" for a third year in a row, the initial lineup for the festival's 2024 edition already has me wishing it were time to head to the Big Easy.
Brimming with must-see screenings and immersive experiences, the initial lineup for The Overlook Film Festival 2024 has plenty for horror fans to mark on their calendars between April 4th–7th, including Cuckoo, Abigail, I Saw the TV Glow, Blackout, a 50th anniversary screening of Phantom of the Paradise (with Paul Williams in attendance), and a 10th anniversary screening of Oculus with director Mike Flanagan, who will be in attendance along with Kate Siegel to...

Nowadays, crime movies are often very action-oriented, aiming more for spectacular thrills than necessarily a compelling mystery, sometimes even as competition against special effects-heavy blockbusters. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Yet, it seems today, many of these features are a far cry from the good old days of mystery films. Pictures that keep viewers guessing what is going to happen next while maintaining overwhelming suspense with a slow yet effective pace. Yet, occasionally, some films harken back to the classic noir atmosphere and with grounded realism. After all, everyone loves a good mystery. A good example is Dave Boyle's “Man from Reno,” which weaves a unique cross-cultural communication story while also being a superb neo-noir.

Sam Mendes’ World War I epic 1917 scored its second major guild victory of the awards season Saturday at the 72nd annual DGA Awards, cementing his spot as an Oscar Best Picture frontrunner in Director and Best Picture by winning the marquee feature film award.
The victory in a category that included four of this year’s five Oscar Directing nominees — Bong Joon-Ho for Neon’s Parasite, Quentin Tarantino for Sony’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Martin Scorsese for Netflix’s The Irishman — came after the Universal film produced and financed by Amblin Partners and New Republic scored the top prize at the PGA Awards a week ago.
‘I want to tell a quick story I’ve never told before,” Mendes, who won this award in 1999 for American Beauty, said onstage at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. “My grandfather inspired this film, and he made me...

The Directors Guild of America has nominated Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite,” Sam Mendes for “1917,” Martin Scorsese for “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and Taika Waititi for “Jojo Rabbit.”
The DGAs are seen as a stepping stone to the Oscars, where the last six best director winners also went home with an Academy Award. Last year, “Roma” filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón scored the feature film directing award, beating out Bradley Cooper for “A Star Is Born,” Spike Lee for “BlacKkKlansman,” Adam McKay for “Vice,” and Peter Farrelly for “Green Book.”
Three female filmmakers — Mati Diop for “Atlantics,” Alma Ha’rel for “Honey Boy” and Melina Matsoukas for “Queen & Slim” — were recognized by the Directors Guild in the first-time feature film award category differing from the Golden Globe Awards and the BAFTA Awards, which both failed to nominate female directors this year.

Hot on the heels of the Producers Guild announcing today (as well as BAFTA last night), the Directors Guild of America has followed. The DGA, along with the aforementioned PGA, combine to be reliable Oscar predictors, so this morning/afternoon is proving to be a vital one, especially as Academy Award voting closes tonight. So, you should be paying close attention to these Guilds. DGA is a strong indicator of Best Director, that goes without saying. Highlighting the lineup for the DGA were the expected names in the main category, such as Bong Joon Ho for Parasite, Sam Mendes for 1917, Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, and Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The Directors Guild of America’s feature-film nominations contain a lineup of acknowledged masters including Martin Scorsese for “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” Sam Mendes for “1917” and Korean auteur Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite.”
Taika Waititi may not have been mentioned in their company when he was best known for making comedies and horror flicks like “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” but he joined the ranks of those other directors on Tuesday morning when the Directors Guild nominated him for “Jojo Rabbit.”
But the slate of nominees also means that the DGA will face some of the same questions that were aimed at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association when it nominated an all-male slate of directors for the Golden Globe.

There were unique challenges in Sam Mendes’ vision for “1917.” The director wanted the movie to appear as if it were filmed in one continuous take. And that required months of meticulous planning. Mendes says the long prep time and unprecedented demands created an “unusually unified crew.” Here, he pays tribute to some of them.

“The choice to shoot in one shot was an emotional choice: How do we link the audience as closely as possible to the life of these two men? We said, ‘Let’s not talk about how to engineer the mechanics of it; in terms of emotion, where would the camera go?’ We had various rigs, and the decision of each was determined by the emotional content of the scene. Much of the filming was outdoors. There is one carefully constructed lighting sequence lit by Roger, in the nighttime town. The town is lit first by flares,...

In “1917,” two soldiers must embark on a dangerous mission to save hundreds during the height of World War 1, and tensions are high in the second trailer as we watch the two men put themselves at risk.
“I hoped today might be a good day — hope is a dangerous thing,” Benedict Cumberbatch’s character tells the two men ahead of their mission.
During the First World War, two young British soldiers, played by George MacKay (“11.22.63”) and Dean-Charles Chapman “Game of Thrones”), are given a mission that seems impossible — they must cross enemy lines to stop an attack that would kill hundreds of their fellow soldiers.

Oliver, returning from London after the wrap of the film, will serve as a producer alongside Mendes, who directed a script he wrote with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Penny Dreadful), his Neal Street partner Pippa Harris, Jayne-Ann Tenggren (Spectre) and Callum McDougall (Skyfall). In January, the Palm Springs Intl. Film Festival will celebrate its 30th birthday. It’s a celebration that came very close to never happening.
Founded by then-mayor of Palm Springs Sonny Bono in 1989, the festival was launched the following year to boost post-holiday business and help put the desert enclave on the map as a tourism destination year-round. Bono persuaded a few of his Hollywood friends to drive a hundred-plus miles to the desert with their films in order to receive free press shortly before the Academy Awards ceremony.
With the help of American Airlines, Wells Fargo Bank and key members of the local community including businessman Harold Matzner, the inaugural Palm Springs Intl. Film Festival kicked off in January 1990.
“Sonny had a loyal cadre of people who helped him bring the festival to life,” says Matzner, who also remembers Bono’s naysayers, including Jerry Weintraub. “Jerry thought Sonny was...

As Oscar season heats up and the world awaits news of the Sundance Film Festival lineup, Variety announces its 10 Directors to Watch for 2019, featuring a mix of recent festival breakouts and movies yet to premiere in the coming year, all chosen on the strength of films screened for Variety’s editors (sometimes as works in progress).
