Critical consensus is in the air once again. Last year, IndieWire’s annual critics survey was dominated by one title, “The Power of the Dog.” Now, a landslide victory has happened again. With 165 critics and journalists voting on the best films and performances in this year’s survey, Todd Field’s “TÁR” stormed the #1 spot in several categories with the urgency of a mad conductor knocking a rival off her podium.
The movie topped the categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Performance, and Best Screenplay. It appeared on over 45 of all ballots, with 26 first-place rankings for Best Film. It also placed at No. 2 on IndieWire’s own staff list of The Best Movies of 2022.
Staffers from IndieWire, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, The Atlantic, and Entertainment Weekly voted, as well as freelance and staff writers for newspapers, websites, radio, and TV from across Europe, Latin America,...

Every decision made by Star, Simone, and Alexandra over the course of “Star’s” one-hour premiere could kill them. From escaping their respective foster homes to rolling into Atlanta strip clubs with the hopes of picking up a manager, Lee Daniels’ latest Fox pilot is driven by reckless teenagers making ill-informed choices. Atlanta-beauty-shop-owner-turned-surrogate-mom Carlotta Brown (Queen Latifah) starts the show with a bit of ominous narration — “fame ain’t nothin’ but a trip” — but the show doesn’t treat these teens as cautionary tales.
Instead, this confounding pilot depicts danger in the pursuit of stardom as desirable fantasy. Rather than honestly represent the storyline’s treacherous scenarios — which include parental, drug, and alcohol abuse, as well as more outrageous extremes like murder — Daniels’ drama exploits the perilous conditions it portrays, grounding its fantasy in a false reality.
[Editor’s Note: Spoilers ahead for the pilot of “Star.”]

If the Metropolitan Opera decided to concentrate its entire mission into a single night, that show might look a lot William Kentridge’s production of Lulu. Berg’s 80-year-old opera is both a classic melodrama in need of tender care and a scary war cry of the avant-garde. Ghoulish drama and rich music come laced together, repackaged by a major visual artist with a natural feel for theater. Marlis Petersen wears the title role like a zip-on skin, and conductor Lothar Koenigs steers a swarm of singers and musicians to a common goal. Why can’t the Met get things this right all the time?Lulu’s been a rarity in New York, and it returns thanks to James Levine, the only man who could strong-arm the company into a lavish production of such a dense and disturbing work. In the end, though, Levine didn’t feel healthy enough to conduct it,...

TNT’s dramatic thriller, The Last Ship chronicles a global catastrophe that nearly decimates the world’s population. Because of its positioning, the Navy destroyer U.S.S. Nathan James avoided falling victim to the devastating tragedy. But now the crew and its captain exist in a chaotic world with few survivors. As the second season opens, Captain Chandler (Eric Dane), Xo Slattery (Adam Baldwin), Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) and the rest of the crew come home to a world they no longer recognize. I spoke to Emmy winning composers Jim Dooley and James S. Levine about the musical elements that turn the … Continue reading →

With credits as diverse as “American Horror Story” “Major Crimes,” “The Closer,” “Glee,” “Damages,” and “Rizzoli & Isles” to his credit, it’s difficult to imagine how composer James S. Levine can come up with so much fresh material every day. “I always approach what I do from a story place,” he says in our exclusive audio podcast (listen below). “I try to put myself in the world of the characters, and they feel very distinct for me, so knock wood, every day is a new day in our real world, so if I’m pretending to be a character in my show then every day is a new day. So I don’t get hung up on ‘what am I gonna come up with today?’ In essence, I think it’s just important to start fresh every day and let the material drive the new ideas. -Break- Watch dozens of...

Are you ready for the show? The American Horror Story Freak Show that is. FX’s horror anthology starts up today and all of the regulars are back including Jessica Lange as the Impresario “Elsa Mars”, Evan Peters as the “Lobster Boy” Jimmy Darling, Sarah Paulson as the “Fearsome Twins” Bette and Dot Tatler, Kathy Bates as the “Amazing Bearded Lady” Ethel Darling, Frances Conroy as the “Socialite” Gloria Mot. The story is set in Jupiter, Florida in 1952. Elsa Mars owns the struggling show, and brings her band of curiosities to set ground and hopefully revive its popularity and fill the tents with money-spilling patrons. But there is darkness emerging from the flaps of the tents as well. After seeing the premiere, here are a few things we can tease and preview about the first episode and the season. Don’t worry, there are no spoilers.

The Met’s labor crisis is over; the spiritual crisis goes on. There’s a lot to be thankful for in the way contract negotiations unfolded. All through a treacherous summer, rehearsals never stopped. Costumes kept being fitted, lighting adjusted, blocking practiced, and props assembled. Stagehands continued the colossal task of figuring out how to jump between centuries and continents in a matter of hours. As a result of all this coordinated effort, chandeliers will rise and necklines will drop on opening night, just as they do every year. James Levine will conduct the National Anthem, and, as always, a few retired sopranos in the audience will holler through the 3,800-person choir — their annual opportunity to be heard at the Met.But while the company and its unions have agreed on a complicated package of cuts and perks that satisfies all sides — or, at any rate, dissatisfies them equitably — and...

Everyone has been concerned about finding out who'll end up playing Doctor Strange in Marvel's planned adaptation, that the following nugget from San Diego Comic Con seems to have gone unnoticed. During the “Behind the Music: Crime, Death and Resurrection” panel -- which also included Jeff Russo (Fargo), James Levine (American Horror Story), Daniel Licht (Dexter), Brian Reitzell (Hannibal), and Steve Jablonsky (Transformers franchise) -- Scott Derrickson's Sinister/Deliver us From Evil composer Chris Young stated that he looked forward to working with the director on his next project. Perhaps not aware of the level of secrecy Marvel like to maintain when it comes to their movies, he elaborated when pushed: “Am I gong to do Doctor Strange? Oh, I better had. All I know is, I spoke to [Scott Derrickson] and did a little pitch on the phone and he kind of laughed. He didn’t say, ‘and by the way,...

It’s a full week in TV and sadly, in entertainment news as well, making this one of the longest podcasts yet. First Sean and Kate say a few words about the amazingly talented Robin Williams, then they respond to listener feedback and kick off a lengthy week in TV. The comedies are up first, including the pilot of Garfunkel and Oates, followed by a lone reality entry, the always wonderful Sytycd, and a meager helping of genre, The Strain and the pilot for Outlander. That’s followed up, though, by a very full week in drama, including the pilot of The Knick and another fantastic entry from Masters of Sex.
Once again, in lieu of the DVD Shelf this week we have part two of Kate’s CW3PR composer roundtables from Sdcc 2014. Along with Tina Charles (TVGoodness.com) and Jason Griffin (the TVaholic), Kate interviews Fargo composer Jeff Russo,...

The third installment of Ryan Murphy’s "American Horror Story" was a charm for James Levine as he reaped his first Emmy nomination for composing the music score to FX’s "Coven." -Break- Levine submitted the miniseries supremely competitive finale "The Seven Wonders" to Emmy judges, which opens with Stevie Nicks performing her original song of the same title. Levine admitted that having his music follow such a legend made him a bit nervous: "You feel there’s a responsibility. You want to make sure that you can stand by it 100% and just know that you've literally been as truthful and honest with your music as she has with hers." Luckily, he doesn't have to worry about Steve Nicks competing alongside him in the race for Best Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Original Dramatic Score), but he does face other stiff competition: Ludovic Bource ("Clear History&quo.

While Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch was busy dodging Doctor Strange rumors during the Dreamworks panel, composer Christopher Young let a few tidbits slip on the upcoming superhero film in the middle of "Behind the Music: Crime, Death and Resurrection." The panel consisted of six film and television composers - Jeff Russo (Fargo), James Levine (American Horror Story), Daniel Licht (Dexter), Brian Reitzell (Hannibal), Steve Jablonsky (Transformers franchise), and Young (Deliver Us From Evil) - discussing their work on various projects. During the conversation, the frequent Scott Derrickson collaborator commented on his possible involvement in the director's 'Marvellous' next project. "Behind the Music: Crime, Death and Resurrection," moderated by Salem's Shane West, was an entertaining look into the world of scoring film and TV (and video games, which is apparently the most secretive of all mediums), but the highlight was when Young hinted that he might be continuing...

Witches reigned supreme at the recent "American Horror Story: Coven" Q&A with Emmy voters at the TV Academy, but other cast and crew had their say, too. Actors Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Denis O'Hare, Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe were joined by music score composer James Levine and others. While much of the miniseries' intrigue involved a battle over which of the show's younger witches would become the coven's supreme leader, Sidibe tells Gold Derby that the actresses fought among themselves off screen during production since they didn't know how it would all end up. -Break- At first most cast members believed Taissa Farmiga's character Zoe Benson would be the chosen one, but “then she started saying it in every episode and we were like 'You are clearly not going to be the supreme,'" Sidibe says. Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. On Sunday afternoon, when James Levine returned to conducting after two years on the disabled list, I stretched out on a bed 150 miles from Carnegie Hall, slipped on a pair of headphones, pointed my iPhone to the Metropolitan Opera website, and took my virtual aisle seat. I couldn’t see Levine steer his motorized chair in front of the Met Orchestra, which he has built and rebuilt over nearly 40 years. I knew he had to be elevated onto the Carnegie podium by a special lift and that, later, he took his bows from a seated position. But without those visual cues, what I heard was a man who remained weightless and agile in music’s malleable atmosphere.Luciano Pavarotti, another musician with mobility issues, often referred to himself as an athlete, because singing is such a profoundly physical act. So is leading an orchestra: Thousands of decisions and desires pass...

Think about a typical day. You lay still as you sleep for eight hours. Then sit in your car for 30-60 minutes commuting to work, where you sit at your desk for eight hours, only to sit in your car again for the 30-60 minute commute back home. When you get home, you sit for another hour as you eat dinner, followed by some sedentary television/web surfing time, then back to bed for another eight hours. That's essentially 24 hours of inactivity. Some of you make the effort to "get your butt kicked" in a hardcore spin/step/bootcamp class...

Long-time collaborators Jenny O’Haver and James Levine have merged their casting shops to form Action! Casting. Levine said the partnership was gradually cemented over the last few months, but was on the horizon for some time. “We’ve worked together for about 15 years and finally merged our companies,” Levine told Backstage. O’Haver said it was only natural the two would form a joint business. “We’ve been sharing jobs on both coasts for many years,” she said. “Whenever any of us had a big job, the other would co-cast. It just seemed like the natural step.” And with Levine looking to grow the directing side of his résumé, O’Haver said the timing was right. “This helps him expand his directing,” she said. The new shop is officially bi-coastal with studios in New York and Los Angeles. They just finished a casting project for NBC’s “The Voice...

Born August 22, 1862 in St.-Germaine-en-Laye, France, Claude-Achille Debussy was a child prodigy pianist who was admitted to the Paris Conservatory at age 10. Now generally considered to have been the greatest French composer, Debussy is proof that great art can come from terrible human beings. He was supremely self-centered and selfish. Two women -- one his wife -- attempted to kill themselves after he ended his relationships with them in cruelly casual fashion; his behavior was so beyond acceptable norms, even by bohemian French standards, that many of his friends turned their backs on him. In the midst of his greatest personal controversy, when he'd left his wife for a married woman and moved with the latter to England for awhile after to escape the constant recriminations, he wrote his biggest masterpiece, La Mer.
But, of course, there's nothing the French enjoy more than a controversy. Debussy's music was controversial as well.

The Kennedy Center Honors have been handed out since 1978. Recipients hail from various branches of the American performance art world — including film, stage, music, and dance — even though performers more closely associated with British show business have managed to sneak in every now and then, e.g., Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey, Elton John, Pete Townshend. Since recipients are supposed to attend the Washington, D.C., ceremony in order to take home their Kennedy awards, Doris Day has remained unhonored by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Katharine Hepburn kept putting it off until she finally relented in 1990. (Irene Dunne, see above photo, was one who managed to be honored though absent due to ill health.) Ginger Rogers, for her part, was present at the ceremony, but her films with Fred Astaire weren't — because Astaire's widow, Robyn Astaire, demanded payment for the televised clips. At the time, Kennedy Center Honors...

I have a bit of a dilemma tonight. There are several new summer series that have premieres tonight and most of them are fine and will just become objects of my scorn as the weeks wear on and I have to face the grim fate of writing about shows no one cares about Again some more. However, that's my job description, not the problem; the problem is that one of these shows stars a woman whose name has been banned from the site. So, the question is do I bother to get a dispensation to discuss that show specifically or simply dance around it and for now, it amuses me to dance around it. the woman is famous for a "leaked" sex tape from a few years ago, her name doesn't start with K, and this is (at my count) her third go at a reality series. Neither of the...

I have been saving this pitch article for quite some time, only to bring it out now. Why, you ask? Well…now is good a time as any, right? The other day on the Eo Podcast, Mr. Goodman talked about watching Jurassic Park for the first time almost 17 years after the fact. Nobody can deny that this ’93 film from Spielberg still holds up now, from its acting to its thrilling take of real dinosaurs in modern day.
After that film, original book author Michael Crichton wrote a sequel called The Lost World: Jurassic Park, prompting Spielberg and the studio to do another film, too. Unfortunately, Crichton’s novel merely served as a starting point for the finished product the film became, both of which are two completely different animals. I prefer the novel because it’s twice as thrilling as the first book and the characters are a lot more interesting.

Meryl Streep "burst into tears" when she learned she had been elected into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The veteran actress, who has previously won two Academy Awards and seven Golden Globes, was stunned when she was told that she had been elected to a special category for "Americans of great distinction in the arts whose work falls outside the traditional departments" of music composition, literature and art.
Directors Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese and Stephen Sondheim are among current members, along with choreographers Twyla Tharp and Paul Taylor. Meryl, the first member to be chosen solely for acting, said, "I have to say that I was stunned, and when they sent me the roster of people in the academy I just burst into tears. I couldn't believe that I'd be even allowed in the kitchen."
Conductor James Levine had also been elected to the Academy in the same category as Meryl.

I've never been a die-hard Nip/Tuck fan, but when I do catch an episode (or eight), I always enjoy it. The show, in keeping with the general theme of plastic surgery, is stylish to a fault and often, delightfully limit-pushing. The music, I believe, aids this; James Levine and P.J. Bloom have been putting together and picking the perfect accent tunes, respectively, since the show's beginning, and don't disappoint this season. Unsurprisingly, controversy has always surrounded the show due to the often graphic (both sexually and violently) nature of the plotlines.
Sean (Dylan Walsh) and Christian (Julian McMahon) own a plastic surgery practice together. They've lived in Florida for most of their career, but move to Los Angeles, the Holy Land of plastic surgery.
The relocation to La gives the show ample opportunity to up the fabulous ante, providing the perfect backdrop for anyone and everyone, from all walks...

Everyone talks about Tosca, a thriller, an edge-of-your-seat, over the top classic, with glorious Puccini music as its underpinning. All true. The story, which had its origins in a play with Sarah Bernhardt tells of a passionate singer involved in a populist rebellion against Italian royals who is unable to save her lover. Costume Designer Milena Canonero. Photos Metropolitan Opera But in this new production which is this year's opening night at the Metropolitan Opera, there is one very special element that fans can be especially excited about: the costume designer is the multi-Oscared Milena Canonero. The production boasts lots of star wattage: Karita Mattila, the Finnish diva as Tosca and Luc Bondy, one of Europe's most innovative directors with James Levine at the podium. But Canonero alone would be reason enough for those who aren't familiar...
