From the golden age of Canadian tax shelters comes a horror movie about a fiendish, fearful freighter fraught with frills, I mean, chills. A notable cast — George Kennedy, Richard Crenna, Sally Ann Howes, Kate Reid — shows up for paycheck duty, and must have gone through real torture getting this one in the can. It’s got a reputation, and if being ripoff-remade is a marker of success, then it’s earned its place on the horror map: See George Kennedy apparently really doused in awful oily bilge water!

London - U.K. pay TV giant BSkyB, in which Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. owns a 39 percent stake, continues to add independent board members after last year's failed attempt by the entertainment conglomerate to buy full control of the firm. BSkyB said Friday that it has appointed Dave Lewis, an executive at consumer goods giant Unilever, to its board as an independent director. He replaces retired board member Jacques Nasser and brings the number of board members to 15. Lewis is president, personal care at Unilever and has worked at the company since 1987. He has held a variety of

There oughta be a law. Just as it should be illegal for sprawling malls and the Walgreen's on the corner to barf up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving, so, too, should critics organizations and other awards-giving bodies be banned from opening the season until Artforum posts John Waters's annual "Best Films of 2011" list on December 1. Tradition, people.
Today's the day, and since it's also World Aids Day, I'm choosing his #9 as a sample quote: "We Were Here (David Weissman) Half my friends died of AIDS, so this simple and painfully told doc on the disastrous epidemic's effect on San Francisco is personal. If you don't sob watching, maybe you should be dead too."
Joining Waters on the same page this year is Ed Halter, founder and director of Light Industry and — whoa — a co-curator of the film and video program for the 2012 Whitney Biennial, opening March 1. His #1: "Inkblot films...

One of the stories breaking this morning is about Dwayne Johnson joining the "G.I. Joe" sequel for Paramount, and while our own Dave Lewis wrote the story up for the site, I popped in to talk about how Johnson seems to be building a game plan that involves making sequels to films he didn't originally appear in. Speaking of sequels, though, the Deadline story that everyone's linking to for the Johnson news also contained the following throw-away line: "The picture has become an important one for Paramount, which will have to scratch the 'Star Trek' sequel from its summer 2012 schedule...

At an event in New York today that might have been a simple PR blitz, Unilever invited economists, lawyers, and NGOs to weigh in on how it can achieve its hugely ambitious "Sustainable Living Plan."
Is Unilever superhuman? The multinational whose many iconic brands include Lipton tea, Dove soap, and Ben & Jerry's ice cream, claims to be on track to decouple growth from environmental impact, to source 100% of its agricultural raw materials sustainably, and to help improve the lives of over a billion people in the process.
The atmosphere of the event began in a predictable spirit of self-congratulation. A slickly produced video talked of Unilever's history of sustainable initiatives. Dave Lewis, Unilever's President Americas, explained how he thought one of the best things the company could do to reach its targets was to influence consumer behavior--the greatest carbon emissions resulting from Unilever products didn't come from manufacturing, but from...
