Apple TV+ has debuted a set of first-look images from filmmaker Doug Liman’s ‘The Instigators’.

Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture—or worse.
Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, the movie also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones, with Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman.

The production of this winter’s Red One has allegedly been on the difficult side, according to a report about the Dwayne Johnson-headlined film.
Remember just a few weeks ago when Amazon Studios had to navigate a tricky public relations issue as it prepared to release its remake of Road House? It’s hard to forget it, with the whole brouhaha where the film’s director, Doug Liman, got irate because the studio wouldn’t give the film a theatrical release and claimed that Amazon was “using Road House to sell plumbing fixtures.”
Although we use the term loosely, Amazon ‘won’ that particular encounter, sticking to its guns and in the end, Liman capitulated and didn’t even go through with his promised boycott of the film’s premiere. The film hit big, too.

When we think of the iconic portrayal of Dr. Otto Octavius / Doctor Octopus in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2 (2004), one name instantly springs to mind: Alfred Molina. The latter’s performance as the villainous Doc Ock is widely considered to be among the finest performances of the entire Spider-Man film franchise.
But what if we told you that the London-born actor, 70, might not have even been a part of the film without the crucial role of Raimi’s wife, Gillian Greene? Can you think of anyone else who could portray the multifaceted villain with such finesse?

While Molina is a seasoned and talented actor with an impressive résumé, it was Greene’s keen eye behind the scenes that ultimately led to Molina’s casting as Otto Octavius.

Matt Damon would somewhat reunite with his Good Will Hunting and Ocean’s series co-star Casey Affleck in Oppenheimer. However, they would not share a scene together in Christopher Nolan’s historical epic. The two are set to star in an action-comedy-heist movie that brings them back to their native Boston in The Instigators. The heist film is co-written by Affleck, but will be directed by the Road House remake‘s Doug Liman. Affleck says, “The inspiration for this was definitely Midnight Run and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” He also stated that he’s always “wanted to do a buddy action comedy.”
Entertainment Weekly has the first look at The Instigators, which features images with the co-leads and their co-star Hong Chau, who recently worked with Damon in the critically and audience-panned Downsizing. It used to be said that every movie, no matter how badly it did at the box office or critically, went to heaven. Heaven, of course, meant physical media. First, it was VHS, then it was Laserdisc, then DVD, Blu-ray, and now 4K Blu-rays; every movie would get some kind of physical media release. After all, rentals and sales were important to a film’s profitability. In fact, some movies that tanked theatrically did so well on DVD that they became perennials, such as Donnie Darko or The Transporter, with the DVD sales of that movie directly influencing the studio to greenlight a sequel and give Jason Statham a legit career as an action star. Yet, despite physical media making a comeback, it’s worth noting that some of the most popular movies in recent memory have never gotten a physical media release. And we’re not only talking about...

Pop quiz hot shot: What’s the best action movie of the past 20 or 30 years that never received a cinematic sequel? Nope, it’s not Speed. Is it Wanted? Nobody? The Accountant? How about Knight and Day or American Made? While the latter comes from director Doug Liman, we’d argue that the correct answer is Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Liman’s eminently watchable assassin thriller that continues to shine thanks to the explosive chemistry between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, two luminous movie stars who met and fell in love during production. Although the movie earned decent reviews and grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, Mr. & Mrs. Smith never received an official sequel or cinematic spinoff and is often remembered for the juicy tabloid gossip surrounding its two superstars.

Between appearing in a minor role for Doug Liman’s Road House, singing alongside Taylor Swift on the chart-topping hit “Fortnight,” and making history with the first-ever RIAA-certified Double-Diamond single, everything is coming up Milhouse for Post Malone. Not content to rest on his laurels, Malone is partnering with Michael Bay, Brad Fuller’s Platinum Dunes, and Vault Comics to create an all-new IP universe based on an original idea from the unstoppable auto-tune-loving artist.
According to Deadline, Malone’s idea is inspired by George Miller’s beloved thriller Mad Max: Fury Road and demonic horror films like Evil Dead. The best things come in threes, especially stories. In Western nations, we like a three-act structure in which we set a status quo, watch our heroes fall, and then see them return to greatness. Some of these stories cannot be held within a single movie. For those epics, those monumental narratives, the movie trilogy was born. Trilogies represent some of the best that cinema has to offer, movies that changed the culture and the art form. The trilogy might vary in quality from film to film, but together these three films tell a story that cannot be ignored.
Before we get too far, let’s lay out our criteria. The trilogies chosen here are those intended to be a trilogy, either from the outset or by the end of the third film. Thus we’re including things such as the Toy Story and Indiana Jones trilogies, even though those continued on with further entries.

If Criterion24/7 hasn’t completely colonized your attention every time you open the Channel––this is to say: if you’re stronger than me––their May lineup may be of interest. Meanwhile, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Antiwar Trilogy four by Sara Driver, and a wide collection from Ayoka Chenzira fill out the auteurist sets.

2024 wasn’t the first time Gambit met a tragic end in the pop culture zeitgeist as Channing Tatum’s unmade film also has an equally sad story. Suits, a long-running mainstay on cable’s USA Network that became a streaming phenomenon last year, will make its broadcast debut this fall on MyNetwork TV.
The show’s slot in Fox’s Monday-through-Friday syndicated programming block, which reaches 97% of U.S. TV homes, will mark the first time it will be available on free television. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
The legal drama, which premiered on USA Network in 2011, became a streaming phenomenon when it landed on Netflix and NBCUniversal’s Peacock in 2023. Even though the Netflix run was non-exclusive (the show’s full nine seasons can only be streamed on Peacock), it racked up viewing minutes in the tens of billions and broke a number of Nielsen records. The surge of interest led to NBCU and creator Aaron Korsh to plot out an entire Suits universe, with new iteration Suits: L.A. landing a pilot order last February.

As “Suits” continues to overperform as a streaming acquisition on Netflix, the hit legal drama is finally coming to broadcast TV. Primetime programming service MyNetwork TV has picked up an off-network run of “Suits” for this fall, making its broadcast TV debut.
The pickup was announced Monday by Frank Cicha, executive VP of programming for Fox Television Stations. “It’s become increasingly more difficult, if not impossible, to launch obscure product on broadcast TV. ‘Suits’ is arguably the most buzzworthy scripted series of the last half decade, and MyNet looks forward to amplifying its success by introducing it to the broadcast television audience. And we’re discussing some fun ways to do just that.”
“Suits,” created by Aaron Korsh, originally ran on USA Network for nine seasons (and 134 episodes) between 2011 and 2019. NBCUniversal Syndication Studios distributes the series to broadcast; this is believed to be the first time a series started...

The premiere week of Netflix’s “Ripley” elbowed “3 Body Problem” out of the No. 1 slot among streaming original series for the week of April 5-11, according to Luminate streaming ratings.
Among streaming original movies, “Scoop” managed a solid break for Netflix while Amazon Prime Video’s “Road House” hung tough in its third full week in release, as reported by Luminate in its weekly Top 10 Streaming Originals charts for series and movies.
“Ripley,” the much talked-about adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s classic fraudster saga “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” from Oscar-winning screenwriter Steve Zaillian, debuted with about 670.1 million minutes watched across its eight episodes. That translates to about 1.5 million views.
A sleeper entrant at No. 2 was Netflix’s unscripted crime docu “Files of the Unexplained,” with 531.3 million minutes watched across eight episodes. The show’s audience grew 276% in its first full week in release after premiering on April 3.

A biopic about the life of the late “Saturday Night Live” star Chris Farley is in the works, IndieWire has confirmed.
Emmy-winner Paul Walter Hauser is attached to star as Farley, and Josh Gad would direct the project. “SNL” producer Lorne Michaels is producing the feature biopic via his Broadway Video production banner. Gad, the Broadway star and “Frozen” actor, would make his feature directorial debut on the film.
Right now the project is just at the package stage and being presented to interested buyers looking to make it, but it surely will be an in-demand package that could go quickly and make this movie a reality sooner rather than later. It also helps that the Farley family has given its blessing to the project.

Chris Farley — the legendary comedy actor behind Tommy Boy and countless Saturday Night Live performances — is getting the biopic treatment.
Emmy winner Paul Walter Hauser will star in the project that has actor-filmmaker Josh Gad attached to direct. Saturday Night Live patriarch Lorne Michaels will produce via his Broadway video banner.
The screenplay will be written by sought after duo Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber based on the New York Times best-selling biography The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts by Tom Farley Jr. and Tanner Colby.

Daisy Ridley‘s acting career since “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker” has been, let’s say, uneven. Sure, “Sometimes I Think About Dying” is a provocative character study and a solid performance by the actress. But then there’s stuff Doug Liman‘s dismal “Chaos Walking” and “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” two films not exactly tailor-made for Ridley’s talents.

Road House, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, has muscled its way to the top of viewership on Amazon Prime. The reboot was helmed by Doug Liman, and the numbers recorded are a positive sign that even though the film was overlooked for a theatrical release, the power of storytelling is still compelling, even if it is on a small screen.
The choice to go straight to streaming was deliberate on the part of the makers and the studio. Either way, the move paid off, as the film has set a new record.

Tom Cruise made headlines earlier this year with the announcement that he was returning to Warner Bros. after a decade to collaborate on a new project. A while back ago, fans were given the exciting update that Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu is helming the film. This makes the new project even more exciting for Tom Cruise as the director’s achievements speak volumes about his films.

Road House star Jake Gyllenhaal and his production banner Nine Stories have signed a deal with the backers of two of his recent films, Amazon MGM.
It looks as though Amazon MGM is on something of a charm offensive at the moment. Warner Bros has also signed a slew of first-look deals in a bid to negotiate partnerships with plenty of acclaimed Hollywood creatives as the studio looks to reassert its ‘filmmaker-friendly’ reputation after several years of setting fire to that eminent renown, seemingly as often and as violently as it possibly could.
Over at Amazon however, the executives in charge seem to have realised that since embracing a theatrical release model through its MGM label, the studio is in something of a strong position when it comes to acquiring top-tier talent. Jake Gyllenhaal is not bouncing from Amazon MGM Studios after “Road House.” The actor’s Nine Stories production company has closed a three-year first-look film deal with Amazon MGM Studios. The arrangement gives Amazon the right of first-refusal on narrative features by Nine Stories; it applies to both theatrical and streaming. It sounds exactly like the deal Amazon just signed Ryan Gosling to all of six days ago.
But this story is about Gyllenhaal. The actor presently stars in the Prime Video-exclusive “Road House” reboot, which Amazon says has drawn more than 50 million viewers worldwide over its first two weekends, Amazon said on Monday. It’s a Prime Video record.
The road to getting “Road House” on streaming was a bumpy one. Director Doug Liman says when Amazon purchased MGM, his film was quietly slated for streaming against his wishes. Liman originally planned to boycott his film’s SXSW premiere,...

One day after Prime Video announced a record-breaking milestone for Doug Liman’s Road House reboot, saying the film amassed 50 million viewers in two weeks, the film’s star, Jake Gyllenhaal, has inked a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios for future film projects. The pact is between Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories production studio and Amazon MGM Studios, with the latter getting first dibs on narrative features. The agreement extends to film projects produced by Nine Stories for theatrical and streaming release. Could this contract lead to Gyllenhaal making Road House 2? Will Doug Liman return to direct after inking an iron-clad contract to release the would-be sequel in theaters? Your guess is as good as mine. I can’t imagine Liman and Amazon MGM Studios are the best of friends after the streaming-only release of Road House, but stranger things have happened.

Amazon MGM Studios has closed a three-year first-look film deal with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories following the rousing success of his movie Road House on Prime Video, which was the most watched original movie for the studio ever with 50 million global viewers in the pic’s first two weeks.
Under the actor’s new deal, Amazon MGM will have a first look on narrative features Nine Stories intends to produce for both theatrical and streaming.
Prior to the Doug Liman-directed Road House, Gyllenhaal made the movie Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant with Amazon MGM. The pic was released last year in theaters.
Oscar- and Tony-nominated Gyllenhaal founded Nine Stories in 2015 with Riva Marker, a fully capitalized production company dedicated to working with visionary storytellers in all fields. Most recently, Nine Stories produced Antoine Fuqua’s The Guilty, starring Gyllenhaal, which was Netflix’s No. 1 film for more than three weeks.

It is not wrong to say that streaming services dominate the entertainment industry in the current digital era. It is hard not to be impressed by the numbers these platforms report, with millions of subscribers and billions of streams. Realistically speaking, though, those figures might not always be as precise as they seem.
And it seems Conor McGregor has recently found himself in a similar predicament as filmmaker Zack Snyder earlier did. Both celebrities appear to have made the same mistake of celebrating record-breaking viewership figures without fully comprehending the significance of streaming versus theatrical releases.
McGregor recently boasted about the 50 million views his reboot of the classic film Road House received on Prime Video, a popular streaming service. Snyder, on the other hand, was astounded by Netflix’s reach in comparison to traditional film studios during a two-hour interview with Joe Rogan earlier.

The 1989 summer movie season might've officially kicked off on Memorial Day weekend with the release of Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," but having been a movie-mad 15-year-old kid at the time, I can assure you that May's first adrenalized action spectacular opened a week earlier when Patrick Swayze introduced us to a man named Dalton in the instant s***-kicker classic "Road House." Critics initially wrote it off as a mindless meathead programmer from mayhem merchant Joel Silver, but the aptly-monikered director Rowdy Herrington and the screenwriting duo of David Lee Henry and Hilary Henkin understood their ludicrous assignment and aced it with knowing aplomb. Their unabashed commitment to inherently risible material turned "Road House" into the "Citizen Kane" of bar bouncer movies.

After a rather dramatic road to the small screen, Road House is the new champion in the ring for Amazon MGM Studios.
Amazon says the remake of the 1989 action classic is its biggest global movie launch ever. And for the first time for a feature film, Amazon provided a viewership number, saying 50 million viewers had watched the film since it debuted March 21.
However, Amazon did not offer clarity on how it reached that number — for instance, if an account watching a minute of the movie would go toward the 50 million tally, or if it calculated a view like Netflix and Disney+, which divide the runtime of a film by the total number of viewers.

“Road House,” the Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake of the Patrick Swayze cult favorite, appears to be a hit on Prime Video. Amazon MGM Studios, which operates the streamer, announced that the action film has attracted over 50 million worldwide viewers on the service over its first two weekends. That makes it the studio’s “most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis.”
There are a number of caveats in that statement. It’s unclear if “Road House” was more popular, for instance, than a film like “Coming 2 America,” which Amazon bought from Paramount and later debuted on Prime. The company also did not stipulate what it considers a “view” — in other words, how much of “Road House” did consumers actually watch before Amazon counted them as part of its audience? Also, “debut” is being used somewhat capaciously, with Amazon reporting the numbers after two weekends instead of one, which makes them look bigger.
