“We’ve got to rationalize visual interest in a world where people don’t have vision,” special makeup effects designer Toby Lindala tells Gold Derby in his exclusive interview about why “See” was “a tricky show” (watch the video above). He explains with reference to the group led by Jason Momoa‘s Baba Voss, “A lot of the Alkenny characters had scarification, but scarification was initially developed to identify tribes that were born under a certain king, so it was like a national census, but we had to find a reason for that that wasn’t going to be a visual need — a need to see it, so we went really internal.” This justification was supported by what Lindala learned from the show’s blindness consultant. He reveals, “Another thing that doesn’t happen for people with blindness is facial identification. They don’t do a lot of face touching...

As much as I love Lake Placid, I haven’t thought about it for a while. That is, until Scream Factory gave me a reason to think about it, by stuffing their new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release of the film in my mailbox. I had no idea before sitting down to revisit the film in beautiful high definition that a lot of people seem to consider this a “bad” movie. This is shocking to me. This is one of the most sarcastic movies ever made, and I love every second of it. How can someone sit down to watch a movie that contains Betty White feeding live cows to a giant crocodile, And calling law enforcement agents “cocksuckers”, and not love it? It’s hilarious. This is one of the greatest modern examples of the horror/comedy hybrid. I have no idea how anyone could hate this movie, but you can’t please everyone,...

Scream Factory will give Lake Placid a high definition upgrade in July as part of their “Summer of Fear”. We’ve given you a look at the cover art, but now Scream Factory has officially announced the upcoming Blu-ray release and provided the list of bonus features:
“You’ll never know what bit you… It has existed prehistoric times and was worshipped by ancient cultures. It can kill a man with one crushing bite! This summer, one of the world’s oldest creatures has found a new home. Written by David E. Kelley (Ally Mcbeal, Boston Legal) and directed by Steve Miner (Halloween H20, Friday The 13th Part 2), Lake Placid stars Bill Pullman (Independence Day, The Grudge), Bridget Fonda (Jackie Brown, Point of No Return), Oliver Platt (X-Men: First Class, TV’s Fargo) and Brendan Gleeson (Troy, The Village). Brimming with heart-racing suspense and thrills, this bloody terrifying tale of man vs.

"If I had a dick, this is where I'd tell you to suck it!". That's right, kids! The great Betty White spoke those words way back in 1999 when Lake Placid took a bite out of theatres. The scene still brings a smile to my face, and given the Scream Factory's history, this Blu-ray will, too!

The air is thick with the smell of sulfur. Perched high above us is a giant chunk of bridge roadway mounted onto an enormous mechanical device that pitches the road forward and back. Welcome to the set of Final Destination 5!
As you may have guessed (since this is a horror film), there are people atop this slice of hell as well as cars and a large smoking container vehicle that seems prepared to blow its contents on the first sorry sucker caught in its path. Beyond all this is the infinite space of green screen, ready to pull this shot of pain and suffering into the "real world", in 3D no less.
Yes, we were told the last one was The Final Destination, but you can't keep a good premise down. For the newest installment, we've got a sort of "The Office" meets Death scenario going on. Director Steven Quale...

Grabbing my late-night viewing snack, the “thwrick” of the TV snaps on and I “thump” back onto the couch. The hesitant “tick…tick” of the clock is heard overhead as time seems to suddenly stop. The sandpaper, “thrush” of my jittery fingers drag the volume up on the TV; “nick, nick” the volume rises. All of these exonerated, over-the-top emotions are courtesy of the brilliant and nail-biting CBS television show Harper’S Island.
The series, being dealt the DVD edition treatment this week from CBS DVD, is a series I originally looked over this past spring season. The show, created by Ari Schlossberg, who penned the 2005 horror/thriller Hide And Seek, and from Executive Producer Jon Turteltaub, who helmed the other CBS hit Jericho, take us on a wild gut-wrenching thriller ride. Excellently these two masterminds have brought us a series that is unique and original,...

Thomas Newman created miniature models in "4: Rise of the Silver Surfer," to be destroyed; then, he had his rubber molds eaten by a giant crocodile in "Lake Placid," now Newman is laughingly hosing down dozens of undead extras with gallons of syrupy blood in "Bong of the Dead." In Newman's newest feature this passionate filmmaker got a chance to combine his past make-up skills, pyrotechnic experience, and love for the lens to deliver a full length feature film for fans of the arts. This expressionistic story teller, who now knows what bit him - the creative bug, takes some time out from post-production to talk about one of most stylistic sub-genres in horror, the coming zombie apocalypse!
