All Arts’ upcoming non-fiction feature “Manhattan Theatre Club, a Home for Artists” will explore the 50-year history of one of the most impactful off-Broadway theaters in New York. Helmed by the club’s very own Lynne Meadow and Barry Grove, the film stitches together archival footage and photos and interviews with stars like Laura Linney, Edie Falco, Sam Waterston and Sarah Jessica Parker.
“Through their stewardship of Manhattan Theatre Club, Lynne Meadow and Barry Grove have left an indelible mark on the theatrical landscape for decades to come,” said Joe Harrell, executive producer of All Arts, a Wnet group streaming platform and broadcast channel based in New York. “Their story champions the vital role of nonprofit theaters in allowing artists to take risks, explore innovative ideas and challenge conventions.”
The Manhattan Theatre Club was founded in 1970 at Stage 73 but took off under the guidance of Meadow as artistic director and Grove as executive producer.

It has been eight years since Hugh Jackman notoriously hopped his way into Radio City Music Hall to host the 68th Tony Awards and even longer since he won a Tony himself. But at long last, Jackman has returned to Broadway in a revival of the Americana classic “The Music Man” starring Professor Harold Hill. In this mounting, which opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on Feb. 10, Sutton Foster joins him as Marian Paroo.
This fourth production of the Meredith Willson musical on Broadway is directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, who also helmed the lavish and adored remounting of “Hello, Dolly!” a few years ago. Arthur P. Siccardi, a longtime Broadway production supervisor whose five-decade career included work on such notable original and revival stagings as Sweeney Todd, Whose Life is it Anyway?, Sunday in the Park with George, Gypsy, The Heidi Chronicles and Sunset Boulevard, to name a few, died December 23 of complications from pneumonia. He was 89.
His death was announced by his son Drew Siccardi.
Born in Englewood, NJ, and raised in Fort Lee, Siccardi began his professional life as a minor league baseball pitcher for the Johnson City Cardinals from 1951-53. An employment offer to work as a show carpenter on the original national tour of Gypsy led to what would be his life’s work.
Siccardi established Arthur Siccardi Theatrical Services in 1975 at the suggestion of Michael Bennett, and he’d go on to work with such notable directors as Mike Nichols, Jerome Robbins, Tommy Tune, Gower Champion, Trevor Nunn and Michael Blakemore.

Taylor Mac’s Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus will play its final Broadway performance this Sunday, June 16, becoming the first announced closing in this year’s post-Tony Award shake-out.
Though the production, starring Nathan Lane, Kristine Nielsen and Julie White, received seven Tony nominations (including two for both featured actresses and one for director George C. Wolfe), the divisive play went empty-handed Sunday.
When it closes after Sunday’s performance, Gary will have played 45 preview performances and 65 regular performances. Previews began March 11, with opening night on April 21 at the Booth Theatre. The production had been set to close Aug. 4.
The Scott Rudin-produced Gary divided critics, with some unimpressed with the macabre humor and others – myself included – taken by the smart and risky script and knock-out performances from all three stars.
Even with the seven nominations, Gary couldn’t find a Broadway audience: In the week leading up to the Tonys,...

Predicting the outcome of the design categories at the Tony Awards proves a challenge every year. But if you want to perform well in our prediction contest, you’ll need to ace these tough below-the-line races. Here is a rundown of how the competition is shaking out in each of the four design awards for the plays.
Scenic Design
Usually there is some enormous rotating set in contention that becomes the obvious winner. Not so this year, as this scenic design trophy is truly anyone’s for the taking. Rob Howell is being widely predicted to win for “The Ferryman.” That show is the likely Best Play winner, so Howell could come along for the ride with his intricately detailed Irish farmhouse with its exaggerated ceiling. He is a past Tony winner on the musical side for “Matilda,” so voters are familiar with him. “The Ferryman” only has one true...

Atrocities happen. Shakespearean-level atrocities, dismembered-and-baked-in-a-pie atrocities. Humanity’s responses – tears, mockery, more atrocity – are ludicrously inadequate, but really, aren’t you just glad we have Nathan Lane on our side?
And while we’re on the subject of inadequacy, put me down for singling out Lane, who is only the most obvious of the pleasures in Taylor Mac’s Gary: A Sequel To Titus Andronicus, the outrageous, hysterically funny and connivingly moving new play opening on Broadway tonight at the Booth Theatre.
With co-stars Kristine Nielsen and Julie White – both splendid – and director George C. Wolfe, Gary could seem almost greedy bringing in original music by Danny Elfman, Ann Roth’s costumes – perfect to the last, bloody thread – and a set design by Santo Loquasto that makes a wondrously macabre mountain out of a massacre. So if Gary wants to gild the lilies and spread ’em around the morgue, go Gary.

Look closely at Carousel’s dancing millworkers and you might see the patches. Maybe you’ll wonder whether the pipe-dreaming barflies of The Iceman Cometh scrub the collars of their threadbare shirts with lye if given the chance, or would they just leave the filthy duds rumpled where they land?
Ann Roth ponders such things – and decides. Nominated for three 2018 Tony Awards for the costumes of Carousel, The Iceman Cometh and Three Tall Women, Roth has a remarkable career in Hollywood and Broadway that stretches from Midnight Cowboy to The Post, the original The Odd Couple through The Book of Mormon to this season’s triple-play of nominees.
I spoke to Roth last week, prior to the nominations to chat about this season’s work, the differences between movie stars and actors (names are named), and bravery at the mirror.

Well before Denzel Washington’s glad-handing salesman Hickey makes his fateful arrival in the dive bar of George C. Wolfe’s strong new Broadway staging of The Iceman Cometh, Eugene O’Neill’s collection of pipe-dreaming drunkards arrange themselves across their end-of-the-line cafe as if modeling for Leonardo’s “The Last Supper.”
All that’s missing is a savior.
Truth be told, O’Neill’s rum-bums need their messiah a lot more than this production does: Though certainly built around mega-star Washington, this Iceman is so well-cast and performed by, among others, David Morse, Bill Irwin and Tammy Blanchard, that Washington’s late, happy-dance entrance almost seems a worry. Is something delicate about to be knocked off balance?
And in some ways, it is. Washington, who...

Audiences encountering Joshua Henry’s electrifying performance as the charismatic but star-cursed Billy Bigelow will long remember the experience. In this new Broadway revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel,” Henry shows off the exceptionally beautiful voice of a genuine actor-singer, a voice that while warm and mellow, can also soar with joy and tremble in despair.
Director Jack O’Brien has given us a conventional production of “Carousel,” in the sense of a show that takes no risks but preserves and protects all the original values of a great American musical. This isn’t obvious at first glance, because Santo Loquasto has designed a breathtaking abstract vision of a carousel — complete with flying horses/dancers — to open the show. But the rest of the musical settles into visual comfort zones for scenes set along the waterfront of the 19th-century New England mill town where the show is set.

Having worked with the prolific Woody Allen on over 30 films since 1980’s Stardust Memories, three-time Oscar-nominated production designer Santo Loquasto is well-acquainted with the writer/director’s likes and dislikes, his aesthetic preferences, and his general approach to storytelling—which has made the introduction of a new collaborator in recent years all the more exciting. Kate Winslet is on fire in Woody Allen's Wonder Wheel, playing Ginny, an unhappily married waitress living near the boardwalk on Brooklyn's Coney Island circa 1950. This broken dreamer is pushing 40 and reaching the limits of her patience with Humpty (a solidly affecting Jim Belushi), the carousel-operator she married to provide a semblance of security for her pre-teen, budding-pyromaniac son Richie (Jack Gore), a budding pyromaniac. The Wonder Wheel outside their window spins in circles – just like Ginny, who drinks too much and lashes out at anyone who doesn't like it.

In the aftermath of sexual harassment allegations against former Amazon Studios head Roy Price, Amazon Studios continues to jettison planned publicity opportunities. Vanished from the schedule of Saturday’s Producers Guild of America conference “Produced By: New York” is “360 Profile: Amazon Studios,” which was to feature the company’s Head of Motion Picture Production, Ted Hope, and Joe Lewis, the now-former Head of Comedy, Drama, and Vr.
The PGA announced the panel September 14 as part of its conference programming. By October 22, Lewis was still a top Amazon executive — but the panel was no longer part of the schedule. (Variety confirmed his departure Oct. 23; the next day, Amazon’s head of unscripted programming, Conrad Riggs, also left the company).
This comes at what should be a key moment for Amazon, which is now launching its in-house distribution arm with Woody Allen’s “Wonder Wheel.” Amazon representatives declined to confirm the cancellation by press time.

A very famous and talented man of the theater once remarked that “Hello, Dolly!” set the Broadway musical back 20 years. Or maybe he said it was only a 10-year setback. One of the many charms of the new “Dolly!” revival is that the 1964 musical appears to be taking place on Broadway 80 years ago. Director Jerry Zaks and designer Santo Loquasto treat the Michael Stewart and Jerry Herman show as an antique, but cover its frayed seams with a crackerjack cast. Of course, the big news is the return of Bette Midler. Playing the matchmaker, she does not disappoint...

No one could reasonably expect that Woody Allen's 47th film Café Society would be some enormous trend-breaking statement, somehow pointing the way to the next 47 films. His movies are mixed up in nostalgia and romance and the self-perpetuating critical discussion about each new one, which has come along once every year for at least the last three decades, is of whether or not it's a return to form or evidence of a decline.
His breakthrough hits of the last decade, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Midnight In Paris and Blue Jasmine, are elevated into the former category, but most everything else seems to get dismissed as a cinematic fixture. If you've been a fan or viewer for any length of time, it's a bit like going to the same barber, getting the same annual haircut and hearing the same stories about the same preoccupations and neuroses.

Woody Allen narrates CAFÉ Society, his 47th film and at age 80, his voice is sounding sadly geezerish. Set in the mid-1930’s, CAFÉ Society has a cool period soundtrack, an older man courting a much younger woman, a Jewish family kibitzing around the dinner table, quotable dialog on love and life, and a neurotic Jewish hero channeling a much younger Woody. In other words, all the elements of a great Woody Allen film. It also has Vittorio Storaro’s rapturous cinematography (a Woody first) and a terrific and complex central performance from Jesse Eisenberg. CAFÉ Society is the most romantic Woody since Annie Hall and one of his best.

Café Society is a quintessential later-period Woody Allen film. That is to say, it’s thoroughly mediocre. It’s by now a sad truism that the octogenarian auteur is more interested in maintaining his prodigious output of at least one feature per annum (he hasn’t missed a beat since 1982) than to strive for the supreme heights he reached time and again in his first three decades as a filmmaker. Nowadays, if one of Allen’s films happens to be above average, all the better. If not, who cares? It’ll make its money back on the strength of the director’s reputation and the bankability of an invariably star-studded ensemble, the Cannes Film Festival will, at the very least, include it in its Out of Competition program – hey, perhaps even grant Allen the opening slot (as just happened for the fourth time with Café Society) – and there’s always...

Earlier this week Brad reported on several casting details for Woody Allen's next film, which I can only assume will be released in the summer of 2016, and today more details emerge as Oscar-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and other crew members have joined the project. Storaro is a three-time Oscar winner, taking home trophies for Apocalypse Now, Reds and The Last Emperor, and he was nominated a fourth time for his camera work on Dick Tracy. While he hasn't done much of note in recent years this still represents a pretty interesting pairing, especially considering one of Allen's fan sites, Woody Allen Pages, notes Allen's next film will be set in the 1930s. Also joining Allen's crew is production designer Santo Loquasto, who has worked on numerous other Allen productions, most recently lending his hand and eye to Allen's 2013 film Blue Jasmine and nominated for Oscars on three other Woody Allen productions (Zelig,...

Will Neil Patrick Harris claim his first Tony Award this Sunday for his gender-bending turn in the musical revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Probably. Will fellow multiple-Emmy winner Bryan Cranston win for playing Lyndon B. Johnson in the biodrama All the Way? Count on it. But will it be the Carole King biomusical Beautiful or the murderously funny A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder that earns top honors as the Best New Musical of the Broadway season?
