This summer will see the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. It may also provide opportunity to meditate upon the fact that an awed populace back then could hardly have imagined an American near-future in which anti-science sentiments would become so widespread, particularly at the highest levels of a government that once rated Nasa as a top priority.
Adding to that discussion is Monica Long Ross and Clayton Brown’s documentary “We Believe in Dinosaurs.” Attempting to portray both sides even-handedly (though a principal figure presumably refused to be interviewed), it offers not so much a critique as a slightly bemused observation of the Ark Encounter, a Biblical theme park-style attraction in Kentucky designed to promote a creationist rather than scientific view of Earth’s history — which spans about 6,000 years, in this reckoning.
The peculiar brand of pseudoscience utilized to provide supporting “evidence” is controversial, needless to say. So...

The Signal Hill wrongful death movie reunites Jamie Foxx with Ray director Taylor Hackford.
Jamie Foxx will play wrongfully convicted Black Panther Party leader Elmer 'Geronimo' Pratt in the upcoming Johnnie Cochran wrongful death legal film Signal Hill. The film stars Anthony Mackie and will be directed by Taylor Hackford, who directed himself and Foxx into Oscars for the film Ray. The screenplay was written by David MacMillan. Signal Hill plans to go into production in January.
Johnny Cochran is best known as the lawyer who couldn’t fit gloves on O.J. Simpson. The legal strategy acquitted the former football star of the 1995 murder trial of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. In 1981, Cochran worked on the wrongful death case of college American football star Ron Settles. Signal Hill will centre on Cochran’s efforts to get to the bottom of the case.

Whether you knew it or not, you've been listening to sound mixer David Macmillan's work for years. There's early stuff, like "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," "Birdy" and "SpaceCamp" (yes!). There's recent stuff like "Twilight," "Hancock" and "The 40-Year-Old-Virgin." And there's the Oscar-winning stuff scattered throughout, like "The Right Stuff," "Speed" and "Apollo 13." The guy is a legend in the field, so of course he's a great fit for the Cinema Audio Society's (Cas) Career Achievement Award. Macmillan began his career over half a century ago as an apprentice in Canadian television before eventually connecting with Francis Ford Coppola. The "Godfather" director was in the process of building American Zoetrope in San Francisco and hired Macmillan to run the company's mixing facility. From there, his career took off. He has more than 80 feature films to his credit, the three aforementioned Oscars (he won every time he was nominated), collaborations with Oliver Stone,...

When director Jan de Bont set about casting the various faces and secondary characters that populated bus #2525 in his 1994 actioner "Speed," it was very important to him that they reflect the multicultural identity of Los Angeles. Not only that, but he wanted there to be a heavy dose of realism in his choices, actors who seemed to be people you could look over on a morning commute and see reading the paper, sipping coffee, gazing out the window and starting their day. On the occasion of the film's 20th anniversary, I thought it would be interesting to track down as many of those actors as possible and tell the story of "Speed" from their perspective. It was a gargantuan task. While a number of them have remained in the industry in some way, many have moved on to other careers. But their individual stories are nevertheless as fascinating as the...

Poznan, Poland— Last night, I had the great good fortune to sit at a concert with three-time Oscar winner David MacMillan at a concert here at the Transatlantyk Festival, a film and music festival put on by Oscar-winning composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. Kaczmarek grew up in Poland and adopted Poznan as his hometown after attending college here. MacMillan, who won his gold statues for “The Right Stuff,” “Speed” and “Apollo 13," is here teaching a master class. His other credits include "Twilight," "The 40-Year Old Virgin," "Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom," and "Hairspray." At 71, MacMillan has just retired. His last film, “Paranoia,”...

Jj Abrams is hosting it and Colin Farrell's up for an award – welcome to what Steven Spielberg calls the best party in La
When Jason O'Mara moved to Hollywood, an unknown actor with a Dublin brogue, it would have been useful to plug into the Irish network – except there wasn't one. "When I first got here, I wasn't aware of any Irish community that I should be part of."
Little harm it did him. A decade later O'Mara is a familiar face, thanks to network dramas such as Vegas, Justice, Life On Mars and Terra Nova. All the characters were American and the actor worked hard with a dialogue coach to erase unwanted lilts.
But this Thursday, days before the Oscars, O'Mara and hundreds of compatriots will gather to celebrate Irish success, and belated networking, at an annual pre-Oscar hoolie that Steven Spielberg has called one of the best parties in La.
