Tom Ford, the international fashion icon of the 1990s and early 2000s, has compared the length of his peak of cultural influence to the Beatles’, theorizing that a decade was a natural span of time for it to last.
Ford, who went on to write, produce and direct two acclaimed Hollywood feature films, also wondered how long Taylor Swift has in her post as the Princess of Pop.
“I had a 10-year run,” Ford, speaking to GQ for a long-form interview published this week, said of his tenure as Gucci’s design director, before he left and started his own namesake label. “And I think that’s all you get. A PR person would tell me not to say that. But that was where I moved the needle culturally. I was in my 30s and early 40s.
“How many years will Taylor have it?” Ford continued. “I mean, the Beatles.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was a mournful widow after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, but later in her life she was also playful and had crushes on famous men — including Alec Baldwin, despite being 28 years his senior.

It seems that the climax of Masters Of Sex has come and gone, and we didn’t even realise it. Showtime has declined to issue a fifth season renewal for the drama, and it will therefore not return to screens – meaning that the season four finale that aired on November 10th will now stand as the series closer.
The show starred Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as William Masters and Virginia Johnson, and was based on the biography of the same, by Thomas Maier. It chronicled the work, life and times of these two real life researchers into sex and sexuality, and was developed by Michelle Ashford. The final episode of season four saw William and Virginia marry each other, at last, and it seems that Showtime felt this was a good point to cut the drama loose.

The second edition of the 'Women in Motion' program will take place in Cannes from May 11 to 22, 2016 at the 69th Festival de Cannes.
The year’s official poster is of Frances McDormand whose presentation at last year’s first edition illuminated gender bias practices within the film industry in the most captivating, funny and serious presentation of the several presentations given.
During her Talk on 22 May 2015, the actress addressed the impact gender discrimination had on budget negotiations for female filmmakers, the lack of money being one of the main issues faced within the industry. Frances McDormand made her point hit home:
"We don't need help, we need money. We don't need more initiatives; we need money."
"Women in motion - it's done! We are moving, we just need to catch up."
Read more on SydneysBuzz about the inaugural sessions of Women in Motion, Cannes 2015.
Launched jointly by Kering and the Festival de Cannes in 2015 as part of an official five year partnership, the 'Women in Motion' program celebrates women's talent in cinema. In keeping with the first edition, the 'Women in Motion' program will be comprised of its two founding pillars: the 'Women in Motion' Talks and the 'Women in Motion' Awards.
The Talks will be announced ahead of the Festival, and will highlight the contribution of women and discuss their role in the film industry.
In addition to the Talks, the first 'Women in Motion' Award will reward the exemplary contribution of a laureate to both the film industry and women's causes. The second Award will be attributed to one or several up-and-coming talents in the film industry, chosen from a shortlist of individuals compiled throughout 2015.

"I am proud that ‘Women in Motion’ has once again been given the chance to feature in the program of such a major event as the Festival de Cannes this year. In 2015, ‘Women in Motion’ proved to be a powerful platform for supporting women in cinema.
With ‘Women in Motion’ – and even more so this year, given the real support we are providing to several female directors – we are taking another step towards real awareness and tangible changes, promoting a film industry that is more representative of the richness and diversity of our societies." -François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO of the Kering Group
The ‘Women in Motion’ Talks: discussing the role and importance of women in film
Taking place as morning sessions throughout the entire competition, this year’s ‘Women in Motion’ Talks will welcome guests from outside the film industry to enrich the discussions about the place and contribution of women in cinema and underline solutions which would make the industry more representative.
· During the first edition of the ‘Women in Motion’ Talks held in 2015, a number of high-profile men and women eagerly joined the debate. Isabella Rossellini, Claire Denis, Salma Hayek Pinault, Matthias Schoenaerts, Melvil Poupaud, Isabelle Huppert, Sylvie Pialat, Agnès Varda, Thierry Frémaux, Frances McDormand and Deniz Gamze Ergüven all expressed their views on women and cinema during a series of interviews open to journalists and industry professionals.
The ‘Women in Motion’ Awards: celebrating talented women
· In addition to the talks, the 69th Cannes International Film Festival will also be marked by the presentation of the ‘Women in Motion’ Awards.
· In 2015, two honorary awards were attributed; the first to actress, producer and committed philanthropist Jane Fonda, who also holds two Oscars for best actress; and the second to independent producer Megan Ellison to celebrate the launch of the ‘Women in Motion’ programme. Both women are emblematic of their cinematic generations.
· In 2016, the first award will be presented to a laureate who has made an exemplary contribution to both the film industry and women’s causes. The first award winner will then be offered the chance to choose the recipient(s) of the second award, intended to support up-and-coming talents in the film industry, from a shortlist of individuals compiled throughout 2015. The second award will be accompanied by financial support for an ongoing film project.
· The awards will be presented on 15 May 2016, during the ‘Presidential Dinner’ organised by Kering and the Festival de Cannes and hosted by François-Henri Pinault, Pierre Lescure and Thierry Frémaux.
A long-term commitment to both Women and Cinema

If memory serves, a lot of my earlier Masters of Sex recaps, from way back in season two, expressed grave concern over the show deviating from the actual events of Masters' and Johnson's lives. But over the course of that season, I loosened up about holding the show to the standard of Thomas Maier's impeccably researched book, and came to believe that it was totally fine for the show to deviate from what really happened, so long as those deviations served the story. But on the whole, this season's deviations … haven't. Gini's stories this season are the most egregious example. Remember when Gini had a baby earlier this season and that baby was barely heard from again? Remember when she remarried her husband for show, only for him to completely disappear for the rest of the season? (That was particularly odd, since we were told the visibility of that...

With each passing episode of Masters of Sex, I continue to fall somewhere along the mild-annoyance-to-outright-rage scale regarding the show's continued focus on the (imagined) personal lives of its main characters. But last night's episode, which featured, of all things, an extended subplot about Bill Masters becoming a children's football coach, may have driven me over the edge.Anyway. Bill is apparently a passionate American football fan, as of, like, three episodes ago (seriously, am I forgetting references to football in previous seasons?). A quick glance through Thomas Maier's book about Masters and Johnson reveals a few references to Bill's college-football days, but I can't remember Bill taking a particular interest (or at least not a fanatical one) in the sport in season one or two. He decides to start assistant-coaching a pee-wee team, and insists his son John join. This is as baffling as Bill's sudden interest — as...

We've been waiting almost a year for the return of Masters of Sex (curse you, prestige-television scheduling!), and now that the season premiere is just days away, it's time to start speculating about what season three has in store. Thanks to Thomas Maier's book Masters of Sex, upon which the show is based, we don't have to speculate blindly. Maier's book (and, to be honest, William Masters's Wikipedia page) provides many potential spoilers about what lies ahead for Bill, Gini, and "the work," which is the true third co-star of the series. Keep in mind that even though many of these events happened after 1966 (when season three will pick back up), the show has a history of playing fast and loose with the chronology of Masters and Johnson's work — and we can't yet rule out the possibility of another time-jump later in the season. Here are six story...

Dramas about real people are not documentaries, and can't be held to the same standards. The demands of one form are different than the other's. By necessity, events and people need to be compressed, or tweaked, if not wholly invented at times, to serve the storyteller's needs. Ideally, you get a story that captures the spirit of the real person, even if the details aren't quite right. But there's still a reason writers choose a real person as their subject rather than simply making up everything out of whole cloth. A fictionalized account has to deviate from the historical record to a degree, but there comes a time where there are so many changes as to make the whole thing seem pointless. Showtime's "Masters of Sex" has never presented itself as a wholly factual account of the lives and careers of pioneering sex researchers William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson...

"In terms of understanding the biology of sex, Masters and Johnson did the world an enormous service, and also just talking about it so frankly was eye-opening and revolutionary," says Michelle Ashford, who created the Showtime drama "Masters of Sex," inspired by Thomas Maier's 2009 biography about the pioneering sex research of William Masters and Virginia Johnson. The 38-year-old arrived in Paris earlier this week looking ready to take on the stylish masses at the Champs-Elysees. Timeless, sophisticated, undeniably beautiful—ahhh, her style is just unbeatable. Although there's no doubt her taste is tres chic, it's not exactly tres cheap. The actress opted for a classic red Tomas Maier blazer and striped Theory top combo. And while the shirt isn't quite so pricy at $95, the eye-catching outwear will set you back $695. Diane's wide-leg MiH jeans, $215, worked seamlessly into the ensemble, but alas, it's her gray...

Masters of Sex's second season found Masters and Johnson exploring sexual dysfunction (including Bill's), Libby Masters getting involved with St. Louis' racial politics, and the show entering the Kennedy era. In the final scene of the season, against the backdrop of the JFK's inauguration, Masters (Michael Sheen) and Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) are resolutely moving forward with their work, but not without having endured a series of personal and professional failures of a sort. The CBS feature about them made sex an implication rather than a focus, presenting it as squeaky clean rather than scientifically rigorous. When Bill concocted a...

“Masters of Sex” wrapped up an alternately excellent and frustrating second season tonight. I reviewed the finale here , and I had a long talk with “Masters” creator Michelle Ashford about the various big decisions of season 2, including the time jump, fictionalizing more aspects of the Masters and Johnson story and… Cal-o-Metric? All that coming up just as soon as I’m a doctor who also went to medical school… When you and I spoke briefly in the summer during the TCA field trip to your set, you said you had not originally expected going into writing the season to return so close to when season 1 ended. Why did you ultimately decide to do that? Michelle Ashford: I used the first season as kind of a year. It was setting the series up and so I thought, “Let’s take a year and see what these people are all about.

“The Simpsons” boss worries Sunday’s major death may be overhyped: We never said we’re killing off an “iconic” character “I’ve done everything I can to temper any disappointment by saying that, although the press is claiming this is an ‘iconic’ character, we never said that,” says executive producer Al Jean, in an interview with TVLine. “We just said it’s a ‘beloved’ character. I think it may have become overhyped, though I’ve never heard the term ‘underhyped’ before. Either way, it’s an emotional story, and it’s one we’re really proud of.” Plus: What TV critics said of “The Simpsons” when it debuted, and how “The Simpsons” looks at night -- illustrated. “Family Guy’s” crossover with “The Simpsons” is alternately fascinating, frustrating, amusing and annoying In other words, it’s your typical “Family Guy” episode. “Family Guy” Season 13: Stewie will get pregnant...

The first season of Showtime's "Masters of Sex" received five Emmy nominations last month, including Lead Actress (Lizzy Caplan) and Guest Actress (Allison Janney). Can the series' excellent sophomore run, currently airing Sunday nights at 10, boost its chances of winning? Developed by Michelle Ashford from Thomas Maier's eponymous dual biography, "Masters of Sex" follows respected ob-gyn Dr. William Masters (Michael Sheen) and secretary-turned-collaborator Virginia Johnson (Caplan, at once winsome and ferocious) as they embark on a controversial study of sexuality in late-1950s St. Louis. As the pair collects physiological data from human subjects in flagrante and defends against attacks by a conservative, male-dominated medical community, "Masters of Sex" also emerges as tale of kindred spirits. Bill and Virginia are both, in their own way, sexual revolutionaries, and watching them navigate each other, as well as their society's hidebound mores, is an...

Christy Grosz is an Awardsline Contributor The story of two 1950s researchers breaking ground in the field of human sexuality sounds like a natural for late-night cable TV, but Masters of Sex is much more than its title might suggest. The Showtime series—based on Thomas Maier’s 2009 book of the same name—follows the professional and personal entanglements of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, whose more than 30-year partnership resulted in bestselling books and a research institute that bears their names. Despite their success, series creator Michelle Ashford says their personal connection is what makes them perfect for a drama. “It is without a doubt one of the most complicated relationships I’ve ever come across,” she says. Awardsline: When did you learn about Masters and Johnson enough to know they would make a good TV show? Michelle Ashford: I had been friends with (producer) Sarah Timberman for many years,...

A review of tonight's "Masters of Sex" coming up just as soon as I tell you how many pap smears can be administered for $7... "Masters of Sex" the TV show is based on Thomas Maier's book of the same name, which was written after William Masters' death but while Virginia Johnson was still alive, and willing to talk. So it's understandable that some may perceive the book and/or show as having an unquestionably pro-Virginia slant, as she was the one who got to participate when the history was written. I think the series has been sympathetic to Bill at times...

While the central focus of Showtime’s period drama Masters Of Sex has been on the early days of relationship between Bill Masters (played by Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), the show has developed into quite the ensemble drama. As we highlighted last week, the gay storyline that has developed for Masters’ closeted boss, Barton Scully (Beau Bridges), has been captivating for many reasons not the least of which being his relationship with his wife (the always amazing Allison Janney). When a book becomes a hit, topping bestseller lists and leaving store shelves vacant, one question always quickly follows: “When will it be turned into a movie?”
Audiences have seen this time and time again, with major examples being Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Lord of the Rings series, among many others.
Adapting literature to film can be a win-win situation, as it provides an original story with a built-in audience that will likely buy tickets come opening day. At the same time, not every book translates to box-office success, with some vehicles being better suited to a smaller medium — like TV.
Creating TV adaptations of beloved literature is not a new phenomenon, but it’s one TV executives should increasingly consider in the face of a disappointing fall season.

Lizzy Caplan has talked about her desire "to be able to do everything" in her career.
Caplan, best known for her comedic roles in movie Mean Girls and television show Party Down, can be seen in Showtime's new drama Master of Sex with Michael Sheen.
When asked by Collider if her latest part has changed what kinds of roles she wants to pursue, Caplan answered: "I'd like to be able to do everything. I don't want to be limited.
"Part of the reason why I want this show to work, selfishly, is that I want to be seen as something other than one type of actress. I'd love to do something like this again.
"Obviously, Michael Sheen has far more experience playing real people than I do, but it's been really interesting. I've been an actress for half of my life, so to be able to have a new experience is very exciting.

Showtime's new Masters of Sex transports viewers back to the late '50s, that familiar buttoned-down, sexually repressed era. But that's where the familiarity ends and a sexually explicit story begins. When William Masters and Virginia Johnson began researching human sexuality in the 1950s, it kicked off a social phenomenon that culminated in the sexual revolution a decade later. Showtime brings their story to the screen this fall with Masters of Sex, starring Michael Sheen and Lizzie Caplan.
Today, the network has released a new behind-the-scenes video that gives us a deeper look at the show’s fascinating characters and setting by offering up interviews with the cast members and footage from the show.
It all looks very intriguing and at the very least, it should be a breath of fresh air for television. I’m so sick of seeing the same generic shows pop up over and over so to see a new series coming out that will deal with this subject matter, and in this way, it should mean that we’ll be getting something pretty unique from Showtime.

Caplan has had some memorable roles in film and TV, but the new show about 1970s sex researchers Masters and Johnson gives her her biggest chance yet at the big time
Showtime's Masters of Sex starts in the UK on Channel 4 next month, but the first episode is available online now to Us viewers ahead of its American premiere on 29 September. The big-budget period drama is expected to be another hit for the network behind Dexter, Weeds, and Homeland, and for good reason. It tells the sometimes shocking true story of pioneering sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, whose work proved the existence of female multiple orgasms, but also strayed into problematic territory in the 70s when they provided gay "conversion" therapy.
The pair's methods included watching couples having sex in lab conditions, so unsurprisingly, the show is full of X-rated moments. It also stars unparalleled real-person imitator Michael Sheen.
