Ridley Scott and his executive producer Aidan Elliott were in Rome working on House of Gucci when the two were discussing locations for Scott’s upcoming historical epic Napoleon for Apple when the director thought Malta, where he’d famously filmed Gladiator, would make for a great location for a beginning scene in the film for the siege of Toulon.
“The siege of Toulon was Napoleon’s first military victory where he really showed his potential as a future expert in the field,” says Elliott. “There was a very specific geography needed to achieve this and Ridley, being someone who likes to do things practically as much as possible as opposed to visual effects, remembered Valletta and the port there, which is a spectacular Napoleonic port.”
They decided to fly from Rome the next day to take a look at Valletta’s suitability and, says Elliott, “it was almost a no-brainer.

Bonnie & Clyde aficionados will have a field day with Netflix’s upcoming The Highwaymen, a new take on the notorious Depression-era killers that chronicles the much-examined crime spree from the perspective of the lawmen who hunted down the bank-robbing lovers.
Today Netflix released the first trailer for director John Lee Hancock’s film – which stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson – and the filmmaker’s approach is an interesting one: As new crime-busting techniques are changing the face of law enforcement, courtesy of the fledgling FBI and technological advances like airplane surveillance, the hunt for Bonnie & Clyde is spearheaded by a couple old-fashioned “cowboys,” in the words of Texas governor Ma Ferguson (Kathy Bates).
Actually, those cowboys are the former Texas Rangers Frank Hamer (Costner) and Maney Gault (Harrelson). Hamer was played in the 1967 classic Bonnie and Clyde by Denver Pyle with a decidedly villainous sneer.

Exclusive: Matt Bomer has been set to star opposite Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys, the action drama that Iron Man 3‘s Shane Black wrote and is directing with Joel Silver producing at Warner Bros. I would say that Bomer plays the heavy, but he’ll be carrying little if any body fat as he comes right from Savannah after he wraps the sequel Magic Mike Xxl. I can still remember when Bomer, a complete unknown, was verging on being The Guy when Brett Ratner tapped him to be Superman in the trilogy of films that got grounded. It has taken some time, but Bomer is getting his movie chance now. As his USA show White Collar ends this fall after its six-season run, Bomer now is focused on big-screen opportunities. That effort was helped by the chops he displayed in a heartbreaking turn as Felix...

Ten years later, now in the red-light district of San Antonio, Texas, Doc performs illegal medical procedures in order to purchase morphine, while still experiencing visits from Williams.

Every year, the Director’s Guild of America does incredibly well in acting as an indicator for the Best Director Academy Award. Their nominations usually match up to what the Academy chooses and more often than not, so does their winner. This year, the Guild is honouring Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow, Tom Hooper, Ang Lee and Steven Spielberg with nominations.
While those are all excellent choices, there are some very obvious omissions. David O. Russell anyone? What about Quentin Tarantino? Django Unchained and Silver Linings Playbook are two of the year’s best films and if I was voting, I would put Russell and Tarantino in over Hooper and Lee. But that’s just my opinion. I would also say that Paul Thomas Anderson deserves to be up there more than Ben Affleck does.

A strong indicator of who will win the Best Director Oscar in February has arrived this afternoon, as The Directors Guild of America has released nominees for its 2013 awards.
Four DGA and Oscar-directing winners and one newcomer were nominated for the 65th annual award for directorial achievement in feature film for 2012.
The only newcomer is Ben Affleck, who landed his first Directors Guild film award nomination for Iran hostage thriller Argo.
Four past winners of the DGA Award are Kathryn Bigelow, nominated for Zero Dark Thirty; Tom Hooper, Les Miserables; Ang Lee, Life of Pi; and 11-time nominee Steven Spielberg, Lincoln.
Among the directors absent from the list this year are previous DGA Award nominees: Django Unchained’s Quentin Tarantino, Silver Linings Playbook’s David O. Russell, The Master’s Paul Thomas Anderson along with Moonrise Kingdom’s Wes Anderson.
DGA members are often members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Science.
