As we get ready for Madras Week, which begins Sunday, August 22, we have put together a list of songs from films and independent musicians that speak about the many facets of a city that millions call home. Enga ooru Madrasu: The title song from Pa Ranjith’s Madras broke multiple cinema stereotypes and also became a political anthem. North Madras is most often shown on screen as a locality filled with crime-ridden dens. ‘Enga ooru Madrasu’ showed what life is really like there, the joys of gaana, kuthu, sports, a sense of community, the strong political awareness of the people and government failures. Above all, it’s a firm reminder...

Flix FlashbackServer Sundaram is saddled with a severe complex: he thinks he is not good-looking enough. Nandhu SundaramRe-watching Server Sundaram (1964) was such fun. Years ago, when I watched this film for the first time, I was awestruck by Nagesh’s histrionics and Kr Vijaya’s sheer beauty. Now, I am better placed to appreciate the lines of K Balachander and the dead-pan acting of Muthuraman. Deftly directed by the famous duo of Krishnan-Panju, the movie tells the tale of Sundaram (Nagesh), whose rags-to-riches story is tainted by the unrequited love of Radha (Vijaya). The film opens with Sundaram busily serving people at the fictional restaurant called Greenlands Hotel in Madras (now Chennai). His quips and slapstick comedy even as he caters to the customers keep the sequence alive, a trait that carries well into the movie. Server Sundaram finds actor Nagesh in fine form and firms up a long collaboration with K Balachander,...

KollywoodHere's a list of Tamil songs, old and new, that are perfect for a dance party. Tnm StaffThe Tamil film industry has produced some of the best dancers in the country. Be it Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, Anand Babu, Prabhu Deva, Dhanush, Vijay, Sai Pallavi, Trisha, Silambarasan or Simran, these actors are a joy to watch on screen simply because of how they're able to dance with abandon. The songs in which they feature are regularly played at parties, too, because of their high recall value. However, we're in coronavirus times now and the only place where you can party is your home. But not going out doesn't mean you can't have some fun. All you need for a party, after all, is good food, drinks of your choice (alcoholic or otherwise), and great music! If you live alone, you can still get on a Zoom call with your friends and party together.

If you were born in the '80s or '90s in Tamil Nadu, Crazy Mohan was an inevitable part of your childhood. Before stand up comedy shows became all the rage in our metros, an evening of humour in a Chennai weekend usually meant a Crazy Mohan stage play. You could go for these plays with the entire family; the humour rarely hurt, though it landed all the right punches. Many a time, the joke was only half-funny, but we laughed because of how it was delivered, how cleverly the words were used to distort the meaning. The crowd...

SatireSreenivasan has been acting, writing and directing films for decades. Yet he believes there is no gender inequality at the workplace. CrisIt must be so nice to be Sreenivasan. To be in your 60s and still live in an utopian world, believing everyone is oh so wonderful and oh so kind, that Maveli still rules Kerala and all people are living ‘onnupole’. Sreenivasan has been acting, writing and directing films for decades. Yet he believes there is no gender inequality at the workplace, and there is no exploitation of women. Except, of course, when ‘they are willing, anything can happen’. Such a sweet world it must be for him, where nothing goes wrong. And when everything is so perfect, what is the need for a collective like the Women in Cinema Collective? What’s the need for it, what’s their demand, he asks innocently in a recent interview to Manorama.

KollywoodThe veteran actor, who passed away in 2008, would have been 100 if he were alive today.CV AravindThe man who personified villainy on the silver screen, Mn Nambiar, who passed away in 2008, would have been 100 if he were alive today. The veteran of over a thousand films, most of them in Tamil though his mother tongue like his good friend and illustrious contemporary Mg Ramachandran was Malayalam, spent over seven decades donning the greasepaint, proving his versatility time and again. Nambiar rose from humble beginnings and earned his first salary, a princely Rs 3, for his stage appearance in Nawab Rajamanickam Pillai’s Boys Company. He picked up his first lessons in acting from his theatre gurus before debuting in films as a comedian in Bhaktha Ramadoss in 1935. No one could have visualised then that this shy, slim, self-effacing lad would scorch the screen as a fearsome villain in the days to come.

KollywoodFrom Kongu to Singala Tamil, many actors have tried out different dialects on the big screen to make their character more convincing.Anjana ShekarIn Viswasam, actor Ajith played a village goon from Madurai. In Red (2002) too, he had played the role of a local don from Madurai. Although not one hundred percent authentic, we’ve seen actors trying out new dialects time and again which would give more edge to their character. And most times, this becomes a unique aspect of the film that is extolled by the makers before its release.
