The Directors Guild of America is disputing a Writers Guild of America strike rule that forbids writer-directors from making minor script changes.
The conflict revives a decades-old battle — which went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1978 — over the WGA’s jurisdiction. Though the Supreme Court ruled against the WGA, the guild has continued to argue that “hyphenate” members are prohibited from making minor script modifications during a strike.
The dispute turns on eight types of activities — including cutting material for time, making adjustments in dialogue, and changing stage directions — that the WGA sees as writing work under its jurisdiction.
The DGA sees those activities — known as “(a) through (h) services” because of how they are identified in the contract clauses in WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement — as part of a director’s job. According to the DGA, directors are required to keep performing those services.

Eric Braeden, who’s starred as Victor Newman on “The Young and the Restless” for over 40 years, is spilling the tea on the history behind his iconic moustache.
Turns out, the reason why the 81-year-old, who first appeared on the popular CBS soap opera in 1980, has kept his famous bristles all these years had nothing to do with his iconic character.

“The reason I kept it is not for Victor Newman. I had done five ‘Gunsmoke’ [episodes],” Braeden tells Et Canada’s Cheryl Hickey during our upcoming “50 Years of Young and the Restless” TV special.
“And after the second [episode], John Mantley, the executive [producer] said, ‘We love you. We’d love to have you back, but a different character. Could you grow a moustache?’ I said, ‘Oh, okay’,” the actor explained, adding that “that’s where [the moustache] comes from,” the long-running Western TV series,...

Long-running television shows frequently have to roll with the punches and figure out ways to keep audiences wanting to tune in. Gunsmoke made Ken Curtis’ Festus Haggen a series regular to replace Dennis Weaver’s beloved Chester Goode after he left to pursue other acting opportunities. However, Curtis refused to return for the first made-for-tv Gunsmoke movie after its 20-season run because of a couple of serious disagreements with a producer.

Gunsmoke met its end on CBS in 1975 after a surprise cancelation that the cast and crew didn’t see coming. The network returned the world back to Dodge City in 1987 with the first made-for-tv movie for the series subtitled Return to Dodge. U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon actor James Arness and Miss Kitty Russell star Amanda Blake both came back.

Adapted by John Mantley from his own novel, The 27th Day is an ideas-driven sci-fi thriller conceived and executed by idiots. What's interesting is how close its plot comes to the genuinely intelligent Arrival. One could imagine Arrival being back-engineered by taking The 27th Day and reversing all its stupidities.Things start off with promise: five disparate stereotypes (American newspaperman, English girl in swimsuit, Chinese woman, German scientist, Russian soldier) are snatched from their lives by a UFO. But already there are problems apparent: the movie doesn't give any of these characters a compelling narrative to be interrupted by the main plot, except the Chinese woman, whose narrative is ending, as we'll see. In the novel, perhaps access to the characters' thoughts would have enlivened them, and this may be one reason authors don't usually get invited to adapt their books: faithfully reproducing the incidents onscreen doesn't necessarily give you the same effect.
