Smart, self-aware and groundbreaking, the cinema of the 1990s is worth getting nostalgic over. No wonder studios are so keen to resurrect it
Related: Pulp Fiction to Magnolia: the best films of the 90s – as chosen by critics
Cinema is once again mining its recent past for hits. Joel Schumacher’s 1990 medic-goth thriller Flatliners is the latest cult classic to be remade for a contemporary audience. Almost three decades on, the original – in which a group of medical students deliberately kill and then revive themselves in order to report back on the afterlife – resembles in parts a crossover episode between Buffy and Holby City. But in the shiny 2017 sequel, the gritty, steamy streets have been replaced by brightly lit high-rises, its rudimentary computers have been given an upgrade, and the astonishing amount of angular yet floppy hair sported by Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Billy Baldwin has been closely cropped for more austere times.

He tackles big issues but can’t resist adding jokes, once turning Hamlet into a story about rubber ducks. As The Other Side of Hope hits cinemas, the Finnish director talks about lazy actors, parking tickets – and his Holby City addiction
Twice a year, Aki Kaurismäki climbs into his battered blue Volvo and drives from his home in a Portuguese village all the way to Helsinki. “When I was young, with my Cadillac and lousy roads, it took three days,” says the 60-year-old Finnish director. “Now, with good roads, at my age it takes five.” A shrug. What does he play on the journey? “Otis Redding. Dylan. Finnish tango. I haven’t bought new music in 20 years.”
Helsinki is the setting for most of his humane and poker-faced comedies, including The Man Without a Past, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2002, and his latest gem, The Other Side of Hope.

Former Doctor Who star Paul McGann will play "a surgical star" in BBC medical drama Holby City...
Paul McGann is best known among geeks as the eighth man to play the lead role in Doctor Who, but now he's set to attempt a different sort of doctoring: he's nabbed a role as a surgeon in the BBC's medical mainstay Holby City.
Mr McGann will play Professor John Gaskell, who's described in CultBox's report as "a surgical star with irrepressible charm" who will act as "the saviour of the hour when Holby struggles under a crisis, armed with a programme of surgical innovations – taking the hospital into an exciting but unknown future."
The prospect of McGann sharing scenes with long-time Holby star Guy Henry is particularly exciting for sci-fi fans. The Doctor and Grand Moff Tarkin (well, his pre-cgi on-set form in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) exchanging dialogue?...

Ahead of the press screening of the Doctor Who Christmas special last week, we joined an assembled throng of Who-loving chums for a grouped interview with executive producer Steven Moffat, and the Time Lord himself, Peter Capaldi. The pair were at the back end of a day of press, but seemed in fine fettle.

Bashar Al Issa, a bankrupt Middle Eastern entrepreneur and Aoife Madden, an unemployed Irish actress join up to make feature films. Their first movie will have an almost unheard-of budget for a British film of £20m. But there’s a problem – the money never actually comes in. Undeterred, Bashar and Aoife submit £8m of production accounts to the British taxman and claim £2.5m in film tax breaks. The authorities smell a rat. They investigate, arrest, and charge the producers, and then bail them.
While out on bail, the producers decide to prove their innocence by actually making a film. They hire Paul Knight, a former nightclub bouncer, now a self-made film director, whose credits are some unreleased and unfinished films uploaded to Youtube, to make their movie for just a £100,000. The title: “A Landscape of Lies.” Paul Knight recruits an unusual cast that include one of the presenters of ITV’s daytime show Loose Women,...

Holly birthday, Happyoaks! Sorry, let's try that again. Happy birthday, Hollyoaks! That's better.
It's often written off as the runt of the soap litter, but we're rather affectionate towards Hollyoaks. Surprisingly, it's not only survived but is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary this autumn. It now boasts 50 regulars and a faster pace than any other soap, but can you believe that Hollyoaks once focused on the adventures of only seven main characters?
Launching on Channel 4 in October 1995 with just one episode per week, Hollyoaks gradually earned a place in viewers' hearts as it followed the tangled lives and torrid loves of Kurt, Jambo, Louise, Maddie, Natasha, Dawn and Tony. So where are Chester's magnificent seven now?

Here's one of those 'This'll make you feel old' factoids - it's two years since the last ever episode of Skins aired.
E4's groundbreaking hormone-fest wrapped up on August 5, 2013 - with an older Cook (Jack O'Connell) heading off into an uncertain future at the close of 'Rise (Part Two)'.
Cook was but one of 27 major characters featured on Skins across three 'Generations' - in a total of 61 episodes, split into seven series. But where are the teen tearaways of Roundview College now?
Generation One
1. Nicholas Hoult
Hoult played Tony Stonem - the pre-eminent bad boy of Skins - across its first two series. Later badly hurt in a traffic accident and forced to rely on others, Tony had mellowed by his final episodes.
Now aged 25, Hoult has become a bona-fide Hollywood star with roles in this year's Mad Max: Fury Road and the much-anticipated book adaptations Dark Places and Kill Your Friends.

Arrow is adding another new character for Season 4, and while it appears he won’t have too much to do in the present, he’ll be an integral part of Oliver’s past. British actor Jimmy Akingbola has joined The CW superhero series as Baron Reiter, better known to DC Comics fans as Baron Blitzkrieg. Akingbola’s role will be in an important one in Arrow Season 4, as the show’s version of the Baron will be the head of the Shadowspire criminal organization. Reiter will try to recruit Oliver to join Shadowspire in this season’s flashbacks, meaning that Akingbola will be a fixture throughout pretty much all of Arrow Season 4. Akingbola’s previous TV credits include BBC One’s Holby City, Holby Blue and Doctors. Additionally, he also appeared in History’s Sons of Liberty. As mentioned above, Akingbola is just the latest new cast member to join...

Waterloo Road co-creator Eileen Gallagher has called the axing of the school-based BBC drama "a lost opportunity".
The producer told The Daily Record that moving the show from Rochdale to Scotland in 2012 was "a game-changer for the Scottish TV industry".
"All my life I have argued for the real need Scotland has for a continuing network drama," she said. "It has never had it and this was an attempt to establish one.
"I'd hoped it would become Scotland's Holby City or EastEnders – the kind of drama which is there year in, year out. In terms of creating a critical mass of TV drama talent, you need something like that. It's a big railway sleeper.
"You can grow talent, you can keep an experienced base of crew who have work they can rely on. All of that is fundamental to create a network production hub, which Scotland should be.

Back in 2001, the landscape of British teen dramas didn't continue much further than Byker Grove, Grange Hill and a relatively new soap called Hollyoaks.
Since then, we've had plenty of shows that focus on the lives of a group of youths, from Skins to Misfits to Made in Chelsea. But there was one show that arguably kickstarted the modern teen drama without getting the kudos it deserves, and that show was As If.
Last year marked the 10th anniversary since the series came to an end, and so Digital Spy decided to look back on the show and find out what happened to some of its main cast members.
As If launched on January 22, 2001 on Channel 4 in the midweek early evening slot, and was later repeated on Sunday afternoons on T4. From series two onwards, it stayed as a T4 staple, but maintained its young adult themes, running for...

Clare Cathcart has died, aged 48.
The actress, who had roles in Call the Midwife, New Tricks and Casualty, passed away yesterday (September 4) at her home in Brighton, a representative has confirmed.
"It is with huge sadness that we have to report the death of our beloved friend and client Clare Cathcart," a spokesperson said in a statement.
"Clare was brilliant, fearless and funny; a wonderful actor who we are immensely proud to have represented.
"Her credits are too vast to list in full but, to name a few, she'll be remembered for her work at the Royal Court, the RSC, the National, the Tricycle and Chichester Festival Theatre as well as innumerable appearances on screen.
"Without her razor-sharp wit and glorious laugh the world will seem a darker place. We will miss her enormously."
Cathcart rose to prominence with roles in shows including Holby City, Come Fly with Me and Doctors.

Antony Costa has landed a return to Casualty.
The Blue singer will play a man who suffers severe burns after a teenager sets off a flare, reports The Mirror.
Doctor Who actress Georgia Moffett will play his fiancée in the medical drama.
"It's really exciting to be filming with Casualty again," he said, "I'm a big fan of the show, and I enjoyed myself so much last time it was an easy decision to return.

Costa previously guest-starred in both Holby City and Casualty in 2010, but admitted that he would one day love to appear in EastEnders.

Okay, so we might not be wearing our gladrags and we might not be sipping champagne, but who says a onesie and a takeaway can't be glamorous?
It's BAFTA night, and while we're not at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane with all the best and brightest from the last year of television, at least we can join the party from our sofas. Yep, we'll be blogging along with the awards - which start at 8pm on BBC One - so grab your slippers and a cuppa and join in by tweeting @digitalspy and leaving your comments below...
And as a reminder, the awards actually start in "real life" at 7pm - but we'll be doggedly going along with the television broadcast and pretending we're not an hour behind everyone else, so there's no fear of spoilers. If you want things as they happen, we'll be updating our winners' list here.

Labour MP Gareth Thomas has called for soaps to better represent East Asian communities in Britain.
The MP for Harrow West also urged new Culture Secretary Sajid Javid to make sure the Arts Council and Ofcom do more to promote and monitor the diversity of the shows' employees.
He said that soaps like EastEnders and Coronation Street have "disappointing" records when it comes to casting East Asian characters.
The politician explained: "In nearly 30 years I'm told EastEnders has only ever had one regular East Asian character, a young female DVD seller who lasted just six months.
"Given that the East End of London remains one of our most ethnically diverse areas, it's a little odd that Albert Square hasn't had so much as even the proverbial clichéd Chinese takeaway.
"Coronation Street has a similarly disappointing record, waiting until 2011 before an East Asian character appeared there - again they lasted just four months.

That cultural symbol of medics – from Kenneth Williams in Carry On Doctor to Edie Falcon's Nurse Jackie – is being replaced by cheaper and more accurate ultrasound devices
If you Google "Hugh Laurie" and "stethoscope", you will come up with a clutch of stories from February 2012 about how everybody's favourite pill-popping misanthropic physician is "hanging up his stethoscope" after eight seasons on the hit show House.
This underlines a more general truth: doctors don't retire, they hang up their stethoscopes. Is there any profession so proverbially connected to one tool of their trade? Will people believe you are a doctor if you don't wear one?
These questions become topical because the stethoscope is reportedly becoming obsolete, nearly 200 years after it was invented. Is it anything to do with the finding that a third of Us stethoscopes used in emergencies were contaminated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (Mrsa) bacteria? No, but it probably didn't help.

The BBC has released a new trailer for Catherine Tate's Nan.
The actress is reprising her role as foul-mouthed Joannie 'Nan' Taylor for a full-length pilot episode in the New Year.
The trailer sees the BBC asking her to tone down her language for the new show, only to see a defiant Nan stand her ground.
Tate briefly reprised her role earlier this year for a Children in Need special as a patient in Holby City, but was forced to cut out the swearing.
It is believed that the show could be picked up for a full series depending on the success of the pilot episode, airing Saturday, January 4 at 9.30pm on BBC One.

Marcel, one of Hollywood's hottest scriptwriters, is keen to talk about her debut film, Oscar-tipped Saving Mr Banks. But what can she reveal about her next blockbuster, Fifty Shades of Grey?
For a woman who spends her days in a shed, the Kelly Marcel story has a lot to pack in. Right now the name will ring few bells, but any account of her professional life must find room for Steven Spielberg, Holby City, Walt Disney and the tattoos of actor Tom Hardy. It would be nice to have a screenwriter on hand to knock it into shape – one like Marcel herself, among the most sought-after writers in Hollywood, working from the bottom of her south-west London garden.
Perhaps we should cut straight to the mention of what will surely be a landmark in her career, her script for the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Abruptly, the mood...

Holby City star Tina Hobley has revealed that she would like a role in Downton Abbey.
The actress explained that she is hoping to land some "gritty" roles after playing Chrissie Williams for over a decade.
She told The Telegraph that she would like to play a killer in Broadchurch or "a lady of the night" in Downton Abbey.
"I want to get as far away from Chrissie as I can," she said. "So I am looking for gritty dramas."
Hobley added that she has turned down a couple of dramas for fear of being typecast.
"They were too similar to what I have been doing. I am not going to take something just because it's a job. I am going to wait for the right thing."
It was announced in June that Tina Hobley would be bowing out of Holby City, after 12 years in the role.

"They make you look ill, so after 14 hours of that every day, I came home and I really had to tell...
