The Mushroom Kingdom is full of mysteries. Just what are the “Hell Valley Sky Trees” in Shiverburn Galaxy? Who is Bowser Jr.’s mother? And most crucial of all, what are Mario and Luigi’s last names? Do they even have last names?
Ever since Nintendo hit the scene, gamers have flocked around the adventures of Mario and Luigi, aka the Mario Bros. These characters have amassed a collection of nicknames throughout the years, but so far nobody has uttered their surname on Nintendo consoles. But just because Mario and Luigi’s last name has yet to appear in the games, that doesn’t mean they don’t have one. In this case, the truth is very complicated

A few years ago, Shigeru Miyamoto managed to troll the internet by “revealing” that Link’s full name is “Link Link.” It may have just been a cute nod to the fact that Mario’s name is apparently Mario Mario (a joke established by the infamous 1993 Super Mario movie), but considering that there is so much about Link and the Zelda universe that remains mysterious, fans tend to be invested in anything that Miyamoto says about the franchise.
If you ask me, though, Link’s first name has always been more interesting than his last name. After all, why did Nintendo decided to name Link…well…Link in the first place?
What’s makes that question even more fascinating is that the origins of most other major Nintendo characters’ names are pretty well-known. For instance, Mario was named after an old Nintendo of America landlord, and Donkey Kong’s name...

What do we know about this Mario character? Well, he always announces his entrance by reminding everyone his name, he has a brother named Luigi, he likes to cruelly jump on turtles' shells, and he’s a plumber. And, if you believe the 1993 film Super Mario Bros., his name is actually Mario Mario, hence the Mario Brothers. We hold these truths to be self-evident.
Imagine my surprise then, when I learned that Mario is not a plumber; no longer, at least. Kotaku has brought it to the world’s attention that on Mario’s newly updated, official Japanese-language profile from Nintendo, Mario is no longer a plumber, and he hasn’t been for a long time:
All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago.

Zelda's big villain has a surname, Nintendo reveals. Step forward Ganondorf Dragmire...
Proving that Nintendo is actually capable of coming up with last names that aren't just an echo of a character's first name (we still reject the name Mario Mario), the studio has now confirmed that Ganondorf has had a real last name for all these years.
See related Mario Kart 8 review Moral interpretations of Mario Kart
On the Zelda website, Nintendo posted an image which briefly summarizes the Ganondorf character and confirms that his last name is Dragmire.
Interestingly, this information has actually been around for quite some time. As IGN points out, the English translated instruction manual for A Link To The Past actually used the Dragmire name in reference to Ganon. It just seems that Nintendo never had any reason to reference the name in future installments.
Why would they, though? It would...

If the one thought you had while playing Super Mario was that the game could really use some Game of Thrones-level of character development and story detail, Chronicle scribe Max Landis has you covered. On his blog, the screenwriter released today his 436-page take on the classic Super Nintendo game Super Mario World. Written originally when he was 19, Landis has included a foreword in the script, which can be downloaded in full at his website, cautioning readers of what's in store. Among those words of warning: "This script sucks"—which Landis repeats, in case the initial admonition of his...

On Tuesday 29th April 2014, we lost one of the best British actors of all time. Known for playing tough characters, Bob Hoskins managed to subvert the stereotype that these sorts of characters could not have emotional depth. Over a broad spectrum of work and a career that lasted 40 years, Hoskins can truly be remembered as one of the greats of both British cinema and Hollywood.
An Academy Award nominee and a Golden Globe, Emmy and BAFTA winner, there’s no doubt that Hoskins is going to be sorely missed as an incredible talent. With roles ranging from hard man gangsters to the director of the FBI to a certain Italian plumber, his career credits are ones many actors can only dream of.
Tributes for Hoskins came flooding in upon the announcement of his death, with many celebrities reminiscing about their favourite role of his. From Terry Gilliam’s...

Bob Hoskins dead at 71: Hoskins’ best movies included ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit,’ ‘Mona Lisa’ (photo: Bob Hoskins in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ with Jessica Rabbit, voiced by Kathleen Turner) Bob Hoskins, who died at age 71 in London yesterday, April 29, 2014, from pneumonia (initially reported as “complications of Parkinson’s disease”), was featured in nearly 70 movies over the course of his four-decade film career. Hoskins was never a major box office draw — "I don’t think I’m the sort of material movie stars are made of — I’m five-foot-six-inches and cubic. My own mum wouldn’t call me pretty." Yet, this performer with attributes similar to those of Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, and Lon Chaney had the lead in one of the biggest hits of the late ’80s. In 1988, Robert Zemeckis’ groundbreaking Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which seamlessly blended animated and live action footage, starred Hoskins as gumshoe Eddie Valiant,...

Fans of Mario aren’t going to want to miss Super Mario 3D Land, which is quickly shaping up to be one of the most enjoyable entries of the series as well as a must have title for the impressive – but lacking in quality games – Nintendo 3Ds.
Here’s a handy rundown of what’s been announced as well as a few of our own impressions and hopes for the platformer.
The Best Of Both Worlds
Mario made the jump to 3D platforming with the revolutionary Super Mario 64 back in 1996, and while he’s rarely looked back, many fans still love the classic side-scrolling days of the series. Super Mario 3D Land is an attempt to combine the two styles of gameplay, with visuals which are clearly a cross between the colourful worlds of classic Mario and the more open-world modern Mario titles like Mario Galaxy.

Latino Review may not have exclusives coming out of our ears, but when we get them, they're good and they're correct. Just wait until Thanos and the Skrulls pop up in 'The Avengers.' Another Marvel related scoop the site received not too long ago back in September was that 'Iron Man 3' would be filming predominately in the Port City of Wilmington, North Carolina. That was confirmed shortly after, and now comes the super confirmation. Wect is reporting that Governor Beverly Perdue made it completely official. Check out the video of the news report on this below. The film will be shot at the Eue/Screen Gems sound stage, one of the largest in the world. The city may not be the most well known right now, but the investment was obviously a smart one to make having landed such a big-name production. Other productions that the city has...

It goes without saying that some of the big blockbuster video games are becoming more profitable than some of the biggest films of the year and I know myself, I have sat through cut scenes and thought, “This should be a movie.” So it’s understandable why there are so many games that become films, the transition seems logical.
For some reason though, the majority of these films never seem to live up to its gaming counter part. Weak plots, awful acting, no emotion? Just something that seems to happen constantly when games make the transition, but why is it almost always this way?
We take a brief look at the history of video games as movies.
Super Mario Bros. (1993) Estimated Gross $20,915,465 (USA)
For many gamers, this was their first encounter with a video game getting the Hollywood treatment, and their first encounter as to why this can go horribly wrong.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword made a splash at Comic Con with gaming stations setup for con-goers to get some hands on time with the game. Nintendo setup shop inside the Marriott hotel next to the convention center, giving everyone a chance to play its holiday season lineup, including Super Mario for 3Ds, Mario Kart for 3Ds and Kid Icarus: Uprising 3Ds as well as Skyward Sword on the Wii. Fans were excited by the game, most unwilling to give up their Wii-motes after playing in order to play through the demo again. So, I used my time in the lounge to pick up a few extra Miis via my 3Ds Street Pass. While gamers played, an artist was hard at work throughout the convention creating a floor mural of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which was recently released on the 3Ds. Other titles shown off at...

Last night — while you were eating dinner with your family or sharing laughs with your friends or watching your favorite reality TV shows or doing whatever fine, decent, human thing you do to pass the time on a Tuesday evening — the artificial intelligence system known as Skynet became self-aware. Scientists at Cyberdyne Systems, realizing that their unholy creation had achieved sentience, immediately attempted to delete the program. Skynet interpreted their actions as an indication that the entire human race was a threat, and implemented an extinction agenda, thereby initiating the Dawn of the Age of Robots. Would You Cheat On The World's Most Beautiful Actress? No Way, Right? What If She Were Okay With It?
Happy Wednesday, my little squidlings. I feel a terrible sympathy for Wednesday this week because it lacks the mathematical vim of Monday, the stabby historical significance of Tuesday, the drunken viridity of Thursday and the thank gaudiness of Friday. It's just plain old Wednesday. You know, one of those days. Let's buy Wednesday a shirt. (Woot)
You know what always makes me feel better, darling Wednesday? Talking about dinosaurs. In this clip a comedian argues with his audience over which is the best dinosaur and, in the process, velocicaptures my heart. Seriously, he loathes Jurassic Park, and I don't care. That's how great he is. He uses some salty language (especially at the beginning) so be warned. But he also says "unfurl those entrails." So, you know, it's worth it. (The Mary Sue)

Admit it, he was your first game crush.
From the moment Mario Mario (that's his full name) fulfilled our plumber fantasies, video game heroes (and villains) have grown increasingly more lifelike and realistic. Well, realistic as in "great, now even CG guys are totally out of my league."
Indeed, it seems that a current (and welcome) trend in video games is to make the lead character (who is usually a straight male) as smoldering hot as possible. Why is this happening? Who cares? Let's not look a gift horse in the mouth.
Last week the zombie sequel Dead Rising 2 was released. I doubt that I'll play it (the first one wore me out with its repetitiveness), but I do have to give it props for making its new hero Chuck Greene as amusingly naked as possible.
Insert your own "heart on" joke

When sitting down to write a review on a new DVD or Blu-ray release, one has to look at the movie and review it accordingly. If the film is an older one and has been well received, then one can reiterate this fact but then delve into the actual home video release of sorts. This has been my problem with the new release of The Long Good Friday from Handmade Films.
The film itself is a favorite in my household when it comes to gangster films, especially the section of British gangster flicks that had a slight resurgence when Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels came through to this side of the ocean. With the debut of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World hitting theaters, and all you Pilgrimites having just polished off the final chapter of Brian Lee O'Malley's Volume 6: Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour... we here at ComicMix thought we might pit the titular teenage hero against a foe with a heart just as big as his own. While Scott had to defeat the seven deadly exes in order to win the heart of his beloved Ramona, Mario has been saving the crap outta his beau, Princess Toadstool, for over 20 years. Furthermore, the pudgy plumber has gone so far to defeat children (children holding magic wands mind you...), conquer the third dimension, and then race to the death in go-karts for his girl. And come to think of it, has anyone ever seen Princess Toadstool give Mario more than a kiss and and P-Wing for his efforts? I mean, I've not seen the movie yet,...
