There are films that rely on the screen presence of charismatic leads – and then there's the sort of cinematic slush piles of chick-flick torture porn that no amount of star power can keep from becoming an endurance test. You get one guess which category the high-altitude soap opera The Mountain Between Us falls into. But none of them have not found a...

On the surface, 20th Century Fox’s The Mountain Between Us is a survival film about a photographer Alex Martin (Kate Winslet) and a medical doctor Ben Bass (Idris Elba) whose chartered prop plane crashes in a snowy Utah mountain range. Without cell phone signals or any signs of human life, they assist each other in their fight to stay alive and venture to a place where there actually might be some life. But there’s a few moments during the film, when one realizes that…...

It’s going on six years since Charles Martin’s enthralling page-turner The Mountain Between Us was earmarked for a big-screen adaptation and in that time, 20th Century Fox considered a raft of Hollywood talent to anchor Martin’s story of survival, romance, and the unwavering power of the human spirit.
Toward the beginning of pre-production, Alien: Covenant‘s Michael Fassbender flirted with the project, before being replaced by Charlie Hunnam on Fox’s wishlist. Those negotiations didn’t result in any official deal – ditto for Rosamund Pike – and it was only last year when 20th Century Fox finally settled on its two leading stars: Kate Winslet and Idris Elba. Recruiting an Oscar-winner and a magnetic screen presence in Elba? We’d venture that the prolonged wait has been worth it.
And so, with the first trailer due to land sometime this week, USA Today has...

"Andròn" apparently was on the festival circuit last year, but this is the first I'm hearing of its existence. But at any rate, the sci-fi movie now has a trailer and the compelling point of interest is Alec Baldwin, who takes a starring role in the kind of genre movie he doesn't generally do. Read More: The 25 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century So Far Michelle Ryan, Gale Morgan Harold III, Skin, Leo Howard, Antonia Campbell Hughes, Jon Kortajarena, Mauro Conte, Korlan Madi, Alex Martin, Gaia Scodellaro, Elettra Mallaby, Clara Pasieka and Danny Glover are the other players in this ensemble, with the movie essentially playing out like a full-length version of...

So, we finally have the first public collision of major college athletics and Discovery Channel’s Alaskan Bush People. Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari has freely admitted to the media that he and his wife are fans of Alaskan Bush People. I do not know if he enjoys Abp in the ironic sense that many of our readers and commenters enjoy Abp, but I’ve never felt prouder about Wisconsin beating Kentucky in the Final Four last year. Via Alex Martin Smith of SEC Country: “We watch Alaska stuff,” Calipari said, referring to the Discovery Channel show “Alaskan Bush People,” which he and his … Continue reading →

The Smell Of Us
Director: Larry Clark
Writer: Mathieu Landais
Producers: Morgane Production’s Gérard Lacroix, Polyesters’ Pierre-Paul Puljiz
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Michael Pitt, Alex Martin, Lucas Ionesco
Larry Clark is back again, and quite quickly, since his last film was 2012’s Marfa Girl. The often controversial filmmaker turns his sights to skateboarders, which automatically puts us in mind of Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park. A cast led by Michael Pitt lends to the intrigue, as well as the presence of Lucas Ionesco, son of Eva Ionesco and grandson of Irina Ionesco, an infamous family in France (and Eva Ionesco directed a 2011 film called My Little Princess starring Isabelle Huppert, which documented her childhood as a nude model for her mother’s photographs).
Gist: Follows a group of self-destructive skateboarders in Paris.
Release Date: Clark’s last film, 2012’s Marfa Girl won top honors at the Rome Film Fest,...
